Article: Salsa Means Spicy

When I got to the Salsa Workshops, Pedro was sitting on a bench holding his head. He said, "they are too much for me."

There were dancers from Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Tampa, Georgia and a team of about 30 dressed in black and red that came up from Miami.

In front of me was a dazzling, 105 pound young woman, in black high heels, red nail polish, waves of black hair, tight pants, bulging blouse, playful Latin eyes outlined in dark mascara, a huge smile, bubbling personality, whirling through a mesmerizing complex of turns, with a combination of delicate gestures from lovely hands to a display of feminine power from untamed hips.

It was 1:30 in the afternoon.

If you were anywhere else, you were in the wrong place.

Article: All You Ever Need to Know About Relationships Can be Learned in a Dance Class

On the English Country Dance web page they had a link to All You Ever Need to Know About Relationships Can be Learned in a Dance Class.

www.dancefl.us/common/Relation.shtml

If only.

Good advice for your superficial cases, which many dance relationships are, but some cases are more intriguing.

A more realistic title is "More Than You Will Ever Want to Know About Relationships, You Will Learn In a Dance Class".

Karen told me she had a falling out with her friend David. Now he avoids her, so she avoids him. I find myself unable to resolve a similar situation.

I have two younger sisters and a mother. I hardly paid them any attention except to torment them. My mother said I was a collicky bady. She said I came out screaming and did not stop for a year. When my sister was born, I pushed her bassinet down the stairs. I was literally born with a nature for upsetting women.

Luckily, I come from a long family of fighters. If something bothers us, we fight. When my sister tried to run away from an argument, my dad yelled at her, "Come back here and fight like a man."

My sister was complaining to my mom about her husband and my mother told her to fight with him. She also told her to shtupt him. They have a good relationship, so it seems to work.

I had a girlfriend whose method of conflict resolution was the silent treatment. She broke up with me four times and would never tell me why. I listened to a book on tape "How to Deal with Difficult People." The author talked about 12 types, like the Liar, the Procastinator, the Verbal Abuser, the Chamelon, and he had techniques for dealing with them all, except one. The most difficult type he said was the Clam, which is the person that will not talk with you. He said there is nothing you can do with a Clam. His advice was to give up.

After one of the break ups, Ifhat, a good friend of mine got mad at me, but she said, "We have been friends a long time. I don't want there to be bad feelings between us." I had forgotten how well-adjusted people behave.

One day I got a call from Eti. She said, "Come pick me up." I went over to her brother's house and she was standing outside with her suitcases. She had a fight with her sister-in-law. She said, "I am going back to Israel." I asked her if she told them she was leaving. She said, "I left a note." I told her not to be so hasty and she could stay in my extra bedroom.

We had some big fights. If something bothered her, she could not hold it in for two minutes. You have to love that. She had five brothers who she was close too, but when her baby was born, she gave him to me to hold him at the bris. I would have preferred a seat further from the action.

I told Karen to go talk to David and make up.

I do not know if the author was right about dealing with a Clam. Nothing I have ever tried worked. Maybe writing an article will.

Article: Make Mistakes with a Lot of Confidence

First relax, and be able to absorb things, and be able to do it without any fear that maybe you will make mistakes.

Since my job, my duty is to encourage the dancers and not to discourage them, I'm trying to give them an idiom by telling them, "Don't worry about the mistakes. Make mistakes with a lot of confidence."

Don't hesitate, because when you are hesitating then all your body is freezing and you are afraid to move, because you are afraid to make mistakes. You can't move this way when your mind is just thinking about the mistakes that you might do.

The dance needs relaxation and not a tight body. I'm giving them an idea: don't worry.

Sometimes students want to impress the teacher and I don't think that this is something good. They don't want to disappoint the teacher, or disappoint themselves.

We are human beings and we make mistakes. I used to use a phrase that said: perfection is a value of God; but the ambition to be perfect is the value of mankind.

We are trying to achieve the best we can. But, when we make mistakes from time to time, it gives us a message that there is no space for another God.

Contra, Vintage Waltz, Hustle!, Israeli

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

This newsletter is out early to remind you of a few events: Saturday night is a Contra Dance and Sunday morning is the first Vintage Waltz Brunch in a while, with Randy and Annette teaching. I will be leading a Nordic Waltz mixer.

And tonight, Thursday Anahata Iradah is at Dances of Universal Peace. According to the announcement, she is "a versatile and gifted musician and teacher, a composer, songwriter, mediator and documentary film producer. She is an accomplished leader of the Dances of Universal Peace with years of dedication in Sacred & Ceremonial Music & Dance. She brings depth, humor, sensitivity, exuberance & magic to the experience"

Join us at Hustle! on Sunday night at 7:00 at 308 West.

Israeli Dancing is back to the regular time 7:00 on Monday.

English Country Dancing is on Monday at 308 West. They had a big turnout of 20 people this week.

Save the First Saturday Night of the Month for our Swinging Soul Dance Party coming up next on March 5.

Do not let the cost keep you away from dancing. We have plenty of things for you to do if you would like to volunteer your time.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Article: TGIM - Thank God It's Monday

Just got home from watching the second half of the Super Bowl. You cannot win the Super Bowl with three turnovers.

Friday, my mother asked me to pick up my nephew at 3:30 and take him to his bassoon lesson. When we got there, someone else was already there. He was supposed to be at his lesson at 3:30. I asked him if he knew that.

He said, he did, but a last minute band practice came up and he did not have chance to change his lesson time. I asked him when he found out. He said, "A couple of days ago." What is wrong with that kid?

We start driving away, when I ask him if he put the bassoon in the trunk. He said, "I feel really stupid" and gets out of the car to check. He checks and gets back in the car without saying anything. I keep driving. After a couple of miles he says, "Do you want to go back for the bassoon after we go to Sams?"

This is the smartest kid in America? Literally, he is on the Buchholz High School national champion math team.

After we go back for his bassoon, we go to Sams to get supplies for my dance party Saturday night and then to 308 to set up. I take him home, eat and go to the UF Swing Club.

I was too late for Christian's Balboa lesson, but the dancing has gotten good there. A cute girl asked me to dance. I kept trying to hold her at arms length and she kept trying to hang all over me. I had to keep doing swing outs with her. Wish they had a Swing Club when I was in college.

Richard was there. Afterwards we went downtown for something to eat. I ordered masterfully for the both of us. The waitress brought out something delicious and I told him, "If you were a woman, I would be getting lucky tonight."

Saturday I went to synagogue. Lunch was weak, so I skipped it. Jonathan and I played a game of chess, while my nephew and Jonathan's son played on the other board. When Jonathon and I play, it is war. Two hours later, beaten up, but victorious I took my nephew home and got in a quick nap before going back for the afternoon service.

Showered afterwards and hustled over to 308 to get ready for my party. After the party, Laura and Richard wanted to go to Emerald's. Is there no end?

Sunday I printed up flyers for my party next month (mark your calendars for March 5). Went to 308 for the well-done Tango lesson with Dubravko, then stopped by the Contra Dance. There were four lines with a hundred people.

Went over to the Eagles, just in time for the performance by Stephen White and Sabrina Paxmann and stayed for the West Coast Swing dance. It made me feel good to see that many excellent dancers in Gainesville.

Glad Monday is coming. I need to get to work so I can relax a little.

Article: Most People Quit Just Before They Are About to Succeed

"Most people quit just before they are about to succeed". Have you heard anyone say that? I have and I wondered, how do they know?

I have been persevering at more than a few things way beyond the point I wanted to quit and success has not been right around the corner or anywhere in sight. That is discouraging. I guess at times you can see the road others take even when you cannot see your own.

After a few times, Ricki tried to quit my Israeli dance class.

That was too bad, because she really like the dancing and she was progressing as I wanted her to. I often wish we could hypnotize people at dance class and put their conscious mind on hold while we train their bodies.

Ricki was worried because she could not learn the steps as fast as I went through them. I told her I did not want her to learn the steps. I wanted her to learn how to orient herself, keep good posture, match her movement to the music and connect with those in the circle, all of which she was doing well.

The students do not realize they do not have to worry, because the teacher is worrying for them.

I told Ricki she had to go twelve times before she would feel comfortable and she had only been three. She should come at least to the end of March and then see what is up.

She has been two more times since and I spent some private time with her. It seems to me she has gotten over the hump and already feels comfortable, but only she can say.

When the dancing seems hard, keep going. It will get easier.
