Article: Salsa Dance Lessons Leading One Thing Explaining Another

Take a look at this Salsa video. I like these dancers a lot and I watch their videos. It is fun to watch them dance.

At 0:44 he starts to describe how to lead a behind-the-back turn, in Swing called a Texas Tommy. I have a fondness for this, because it was one of my Dad's moves.

Watch his explanation and see if you can see what is wrong before you read on.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJtWyfFWfrA

This is not a criticism of these teachers, because I think they are good teachers and I learn a lot from them. This is illustrative of a problem with how social dancing is taught in general.

When it comes to communicating, literally, people often do not know what they are doing. People do not understand the subconscious clues they use to communicate.

Consequently you get instruction that is incorrect and does not work. This causes all kinds of problems, including injuries, conflicts, frustration, slow progress and people dropping out.

Communicating unambiguously with your dance partner is simple, if you know how. It takes time to train your body to do it automatically, but you can learn the principles of how to communicate every step in every social dance in only a short time.

I often find communicating with beginners easier than more experienced dancers, because beginners have not learned a lot of unnatural things that create problems.

Have you figured out yet what is wrong with this instruction?

I was taught this move in Swing exactly like it was taught here and I could not do it. My head kept getting in the way and we were always slow.

At 0:46 he tells you to reach behind the woman's back and switch hands. You have to bend over the lady to reach both hands behind her at the same time. If you try to do that, you can bang heads.

At 0:51 he tells you to pull on the woman's hand to unwrap her. You cannot unwrap the woman in time to the music in this position. She will turn late. Plus it is dangerous. Look at the position of the woman's arm and shoulder. If a lot of men pull on a lot of woman's hands in this position, some women are going to end up with sore shoulders.

He does not do the things he says he is doing. There is no problem with their dancing. He signals the move correctly. You can learn how to signal the move by doing what he does, not what he says.

Watch the first ten seconds of the video and see if you can figure out how the behind-the-back turn is led.

Have it yet?

Now stop the video at 0:07. Look at the woman's hips and shoulders. The woman is already turning. Now look at the man's right hand. He has not yet made contact with the woman's right hand, so he could not possibly have led her to turn by pulling with his right hand on her right hand behind her back.

Stop the video at 0:08. The woman has already turned nearly 180 degrees when he makes contact with the right hand.

The correct explanation is you must signal the woman to turn before you switch hands. You use your right hand to catch the woman's right hand behind her back to reconnect after she has already begun turning.

How you create the turn is up to you. There are many ways, but one way you do not signal the turn is by pulling the woman's right hand behind her back.

Note: In fairness to the Salsa instructors, it took a lot of effort to make these videos. They do a great service to the dance world for making them available for free. I certainly appreciate their efforts. Anybody's work, whether videos or articles, can easily be picked apart by critics for flaws. There is an obligation by the student to attempt to understand the meaning of the instructor and look for what is right, not what is wrong in the instruction. In this case, I am using this video to illustrate a problem in all social dance instruction and not to find fault with these excellent instructors.

Article: Harvest Moon on the Autumnal Equinox

Last night was the autumnal equinox. Summer has ended and autumn has begun.

The full moon closest to the autumnal equinox is called the Harvest Moon, since farmers can take advantage of the light of this full
moon to harvest their fall crops late into the night.

The sun and moon share a 19 year cycle, which is why the Jewish calendar has a 19 year cycle. Every 19 years the sun and moon repeat
their position in relation to the earth.

Once every 19 years, the Harvest Moon rises on the autumnal equinox as the sun sets directly in the west.

According to Joseph Campbell, the plains Indians celebrated this day, because they could see both horizons and there appeared to be
two suns in the sky at the same times at opposite ends of the earth.

The moon rises on average 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the moon seems to rise nearly
the same time each night, only 25 to 30 minutes later. This is because the tilt of the earth is sideways to the sun at the autumnal
equinox.

So, you can still get out tonight for a spectacular view of a gorgeous moon rise at sunset. I like the one from the Paynes Prairie
overlook on the boardwalk off 441, where you can see the horizon. Wear long pants and sleeves to protect from the mosquitoes.

The bright star near the moon is Jupiter.

Article: Trust Other People in Dancing and in Life

Sometimes my dad would tell me to do things. There might be some family related event or some other thing and he might say, "You don't have to go to this," or he might say, "You should do this."

Whatever it was, if he said I should do it, I would do it. I fought with my dad a lot, but never over things like this.

You cannot trust your own decision making. We are all biased and influenced by our emotions that are often not in our best interest. We tend to make decisions based on laziness, fear and avoiding uncomfortableness.

That is one of the reasons we need trainers and teachers, to challenge us and force us to do things we would not do otherwise. Get us out of our comfort zone.

A friend of mine, Rick called me up late one night to go on a sailboat from Miami to the Bahamas. They needed a fourth guy to share the expenses. I agreed, but as soon as Rick hung up the phone, I changed my mind.

I called Rick back and told him, "I'm not going. I will be throwing up for four days." Rick talked me back into going, but again, as soon as he hung up, I changed my mind again.

I am embarrassed to say, this happened at least five more times that same night and has to be the most absurd phone calls I have ever made. I did go on that trip. I did not throw up and it was one of the most memorable four days I have spent.

A couple years later, when Rick told me I should go on a camping canoe trip down the Colorado river, I went, even though I was sure I was not going to sleep for a week.

This Labor Day weekend I was responsible for the evenings' main entertainment at Mosaic Outdoor Club's International Event.

We were at a kids camp in the mountains north of Montreal. The first night I led a folk dance program for a couple of hours.

The camp fire and night hike got rained out, so I had to improvise some other dancing to keep people entertained. Most people participated, but a few sat and watched.

Mosaic wanted to get their money's worth out of me and had me organize a talent show the second night. I have no talent, but fortunately some of the other people did.

There were a number of singers (mostly funny songs) and various improv numbers. They were really good and I was impressed.

The last night, I was leading another dance program. Again there were some people sitting out, so I said, "I know some of you are uncomfortable about getting up and dancing."

"You have to trust me. I have done this hundreds and hundreds of times. I picked these dances for you, for people who do not dance regularly. I promise, you are going to like it."

That got them up dancing, at least a little anyway.

Sometimes you have to trust other people. You have to figure, when you have a difference of opinion, at least half the time you are wrong, and probably a lot more than that if the other person knows something you do not know.

A friend of mine fixed me up with an Israeli woman, who I will call Yael. Yael and I were really good friends for a long time.

As is my normal operating procedure, I eventually got her pretty upset with me.

My favorite show is the Dog Whisperer. One of Cesar Milan's favorite things to say is dogs live in the now. They can let go of
whatever happened to them in the past. People not so much.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the high holy days of the Jewish year, a time of reflection and atonement.

Yom Kippur is a gift. We fast and afflict our souls to atone for our spiritual deficiencies, so we can let go of the past and live
fully.

But Yom Kippur does not work for our conflicts with other people. These we have to work out with them.

If you have meaningful relationships with people, you are going to get upset with one another at times. That is healthy. What is
unhealthy, is not resolving your situation.

In my family we fight. My sister and dad were fighting one time and my sister tried to run out of the room crying. My dad would not
let her go and told her, "Come back here and fight like a man."

Years later, when my sister complained to my mother, my mother told her, "You have to fight with your husband. You cannot have a
happy marriage if you keep things inside."

My girlfriend at the time when Yael got upset, had recently broken up with me. We had also been friends for a long time. She
completely refused to talk with me, to this day, even though I was her best friend for a decade.

You cannot resolve anything if a person will not talk with you.

I did what I could to make peace with Yael. Yael responded, "We have been friends for a long time and I don't want there to be
problems between us." That was refreshing.

Now Yael is happily married with two kids and I had something to do with that. See, all because she made up with me.

From the synagogue to dancing, as Thomas Jefferson says, people are going to get into trouble with one another. If you take the
opportunity to get out of trouble, you build deeper friendships.

With Yom Kippur upon us, now is a good time to restore your relationships.

DRACULA RETURNS ...MORE MYSTERIOUS THAN EVER!

"He's back and wants to suck your blood! Join him onstage during intermission for the ultimate Halloween Costume Contest - IF YOU
DARE! The ultimate Dracula!"
GAINESVILLE, FL- September 15, 2010

Gainesville, FL, September 7, 2010: Dance Alive National Ballet, State Touring Company of Florida for over 36 years, is pleased to
present DRACULA. Based in Gainesville, Florida, DANB is a professional ballet company with a roster of award winning international
artists.

WHAT: Dracula
WHEN: Friday, October 29, 2010 @ 7:30 PM
WHERE: Phillips Center for Performing Arts in Gainesville, Florida
TICKETS: TicketMaster outlets and Phillips Center Box Office

The seductive Count Dracula of fictional lore serves up a Halloween story for the brave of heart. Travelers to the crumbling castle
of the Count find themselves threatened by Dracula and his three "brides". It is up to the brilliant Professor Abraham van Helsing
to destroy the evil count. The ultimate story of good versus evil.

Returning in the title role of Count Dracula is the darkly handsome principal dancer Andre Valladon. His first victim, Lucy is
danced by principal dancer Michele Incollingo in a mesmerizing role. Other principals include Rostislav Dzabraev, as the heroic
lawyer Jonathan Harker, and Reka Gyulai as his winsome bride, Mina. Against the marvelous backdrop by Gainesville artist, Margaret
Ross Tolbert, this production of DRACULA is gothic, svelte, and contemporary all at the same time.

As the curtain goes up we are transfixed by a dramatic Transylvanian castle with vile green gargoyles perched atop of arched
windows, and a creaking gate that rises to reveal our menacing Count Dracula. We are next invited into a Victorian England with
elongated and exaggerated sets - giving us a sense of foreboding and unreality. A most unusual and frightening set of ruby red
lips, replete with large white menacing teeth, appear in the second act with Dracula bounding through them in a hideous mask of
evil.

The story is conveyed through the dance, and is supported by a speaking role of the scientist, Abraham van Helsing. All in all, a
most unusual and creative production sure to fill you with excitement, fear, and a strange sense of satisfaction

Called by Dancer Magazine "an exciting combination of dance, music, narration and setting"," The seductive Count Dracula of
fictional lore serves up a Halloween story for the brave of heart. Tuttle has long since transcended mere prettiness, and characters
which might be nothing but filler in other works are so well conceived and danced that they enrich this ballet. This is a brilliant
work."

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
