Plate Full of Maggots and Other English Country Dances

Dear Dancers,

 
That's just what you'll get if you come to dance with us on Monday evening, Halloween.  But don't worry--they are lots of fun and our dancers really bring delicious food (I hear there will be a wonderful dessert this week)! There are alot of English Country Maggot Dances.  What is a Maggot dance?  This use of maggot means a fanciful or whimsical thing which derives from the folk belief that a whimsical or crotchety person had maggots in his or her brain.  So these are dances with unique or unusual moves. Some dances we'll be doing are The Devil's Maggot, Dick's Maggot, Jack (O'lantern's) Maggot, The Flying Sorceress, The Black Cat, and Puck's Deceit.  I just love the names of English dances!!! There are some for every occassion!  Remember you may dress up if you like (scare us or come as a Regency person)--or come as yourself! 
 
The Gainesville English Dancers had a wonderful time performing on Saturday at the Micanopy Fall Festival.  We danced Bryon's Boutade, An Early Frost, Fandango, Fast Friends, Wibsey Roundabout, and Freeford Gardens.  We had 10 dancers (Piper Call, Sarah Reynierson, Trish Peterson, Lisa Jensen, Annette Merritt, Michael Croft, Kurt Seaburg, Alex Funk, Will Winter and Randy Thorp (who also called and led us through the dances) and Hoggetowne Fancy (Bob Reynierson, Isabel Coutts, John Monkus and Dave Willkom) played the beautiful music.  Everyone was dressed in Regency clothing--ladies in long, Empire, colorful dresses and the gentlemen in their vests and cravates (swoon!!). 

 

Come join us on Monday evening to listen to beautiful live music by Hoggetowne Fancy, conquer the interesting figures, hear some dance history and amusing facts, exercise, and have fun!!
 

Please bring a water bottle or cup if you can remember--so we don't use so much plasticware. And bring a snack to share. 

 

Everyone is welcome.  No experience, special dress, or partner is necessary. Come join us for a wonderful evening of dancing.  If you are new or have only been once or twice, please come back.  New people have been doing fine by following along.  They always comment that everyone was so nice and understanding.  We've all been new and we understand.  The only requirement is to bring a smile and to have fun.

* The Potter's Wheel (LW, Dolphin Hey) 

Impropriety (LW 1^st couple starts each round of dance on a different side)

* Jaque Latin (set 2x diagonally in towards set of 4; set 2x out)

* Turn of the Tide (LW, waltz-time, one's lead down, turn, fall down, lead up, turn fall up)

Mr. Isaacs's Maggot (LW, corners turn, release hands but lock eyes)

* The Dancing Wife (LW, Dance with couples above your set)  

Zephyrs & Flora (LW; corners join R hands; join L hands; turn half way)

* Alice (LW waltz; single file around the circle)

Belle of Amherst (3 cpl; partners right shoulder together, turn single left pass partner left...)

* Evergreen (LW women walk out of the set followed by partner, turn and back the man into place with eyes!)

Busy weekend of dancing coming up for Halloween.

 

Friday night is Josh's Angels and Devils Autism Fundraiser Dance and Halloween Costume Party with Patti Jobst. Patti will teach a West Coast Swing lesson from 7:30 to 8:30. This is a benefit and you can bring new dancers. I will be giving a lesson on how to dance with a partner at the same time for beginners.

 

Swing and Sway also meets Friday night.

 

Saturday night Tango Pavadita holds their milonga.

 

Sunday afternoon is Imperial Dance Studio's 2011 Showcase.

 

Lindy Swing Dancing 101 starts this Sunday night from 6 to 7 pm. Sign up at Santa Fe College or you can just show up.

Lindy Swing and Hustle! for people with some dance experience is immediately afterwards, 7 to 8:30 swing and 8:30 to 9:30 hustle. Anyone coming to the class at 7 is welcome to come early to the beginners class at 6 for no charge.

 

Monday night we have a special event with internationally renowned Ira Weisburd leading Israeli folk dancing. Everyone can attend this fun evening. You do not need to be an Israeli dancer. Ira Weisburd comes to Gainesville on Monday October 31 to lead an Israeli folk dance workshop. Below are a couple of posts about how much people enjoyed Ira's workshop in Boston.

Three weeks after Ira's workshop North of Boston, the energy level is still high. Our groups have added eight new dancers who attended his workshop. We had him teach mostly his circle dances that night since his Sonata was already popular with the groups. His dances were so popular we have been asked to perform two of them next month at a Fundraising event.

 

Ira taught at all levels. He broke dances down so beginners could follow easily. He also called an advanced dance that many could follow without a teach. We were reminded that Ira's reach extends across the dance world: His Israeli workshop also attracted International and Line dancers. Since our group is one of the "friendly, welcoming" types (as compared to the hard-core ones discussed recently), Ira's workshop was an opportunity for meeting fellow dancers. Many of the new dancers had previously done only international or line dances and are now hooked on Israeli dancing.

 

Ira's dedication and commitment were clearly shown the day of our workshop when an extremely unusual rainstorm had flooded many roads. Even though it took three times the normal travel time, he never even considered cancelling either workshop he had booked for that day. Despite the horrible driving conditions, most of the pre-registered dancers showed up at both events. In fact, our attendence at his Israeli workshop far exceeded the number of local dancers and almost the capacity of the room.

 

If Ira is ever touring your area I would definitely encourage your group to book an event.

Ballroom, Tango brunch, Congratulations to the Gainesville Swing Community

Hello {!firstname_fix} and Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

 

Congratulations to the Gainesville Swing Community. Last Sunday afternoon Josh held a large swing workshop and dance with Danielle Blouin. Even more impressive was Josh's Wednesday night swing party, with more than a dozen couples on the floor all from Gainesville. When I moved back to Gainesville in 2005, the only swing dancing was with the UF Swing Club. It has been a long road, but we now have a wonderful group of swing dancers from Gainesville. Thanks to all of you that have persisted and developed your skills. Thanks to those organizing swing dancing Cathy Jean, Essie Jennings, Josh Angel, Judi Markell, Maria Alvarez and Richard Nalli. It is a real pleasure to dance with all of you.

 

Registration for two classes for new dancers is open via Santa Fe College Community Education. Beginner classes are the best way to get new people into the dance community. Encourage those you know to sign up.

The classes are Super Simple Lindy Hop Swing Dancing 101 and International Folk Dancing 101. Sign up now here.

You have three days of Tango, starting Friday night with UF Tango Club, where Burcin and Alper provide some very nice instruction and music to dance to. Saturday night is the classiest dance in town, Tango Pavadita's milonga and Sunday morning the elegant Tango Pavadita brunch.

 

Lots of Swing this week. On Friday join UF Swing Club. Sunday evening come out for Lindy Swing and Hustle!. Tuesday join Richard for East Coast Swing and Wednesday join Essie for West Coast Swing. Take advantage of the more you dance the more you save program. Dance with Richard and Essie and get half off or more on Sunday night Lindy Swing. Next Friday October 28 is Josh's Halloween Swing Dance.

 

Monday night join my Israeli Folk Dancing at 7 pm at B'nai Israel for only $5 or free if you come to my Lindy Swing on Sunday.

You will have a great time. Ira is just returning from tours of East Asia and the United States.

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

 

Come out tonight for Israeli folk dancing. Beginners session is from 7 to 8. Intermediate is from 8 to 9. Everyone welcome. Only $5 per family.

7:00 - 8:30 : Swing Dance Class Lindy-style and Dancing
8:30 - 9:30 : Hustle!

 

Introductory super slow paced Swing class from 6 to 7.

 

From 7 to 8:30, we continue the 8-count Lindy Swing Rhythm
Turn with numerous variations and connecting to 6-count basic.
This is for four weeks October 2, 9, 23 and 30. October 16
is a special event West Coast Swing with Danielle Blouin.

 

$10 general, $5 students per night.
Includes Israeli Dancing on Monday nights at B'nai Israel

 

Special program, the more you dance, the more you save.
Go to any organized dancing during the prior week and
get half off so only $5 general and $3 students.
Go to any two organized dance sessions and Sunday night is free.
