Ballroom Dancing, Swing, Tango, Schedule Changes and New Classes

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,
 
Congratulations and a big thank you to Essie Jennings, who taught her last class, at least for now, this week. Essie is moving to North Carolina. Wish Essie all the best. We will miss her.
 
Kay teaches Ballroom American Tango this Friday at 308 West. Afterwards you learn Argentine Tango with the UF Tango Club.
 
Saturday night Tango Pavadita holds their regional milonga at 308 West.
 
Sunday afternoon is a Ballroom Dance at the Senior Center with Maria Alvarez teaching a Ch Cha lesson and Joe Glover and Mary Reed dancing a short performance. Chad is the DJ.
 
Sunday evening you can still join the Super Simple Swing 101 series from 6 to 7. From 7 to 8:15 come for Swing for people with some experience and from 8:15 to 9:30 Hustle! Sunday we learn to dance without any pushing or pulling.

There is no West Coast Swing class this Wednesday at 308 West, but Wednesday classes will resume in March.
 
Thursday come out at 8 pm to 308 West for Judi Markell's first West Coast Swing class at this new location.
 
Next Saturday March 3 is the monthly West Coast Swing dance with a workshop with US Open Champion Patti Jobst.

This new ongoing class will normally be $35 for the first four Thursdays of the month, but since March has 5 Thursdays, we are going to throw the 5th Thursday in FREE as a kind of Grand Opening Special.
 
This is an Intermediate WCS class, so experience with West Coast Swing in needed. Basic 6 and 8 count patterns such as Push Break, Side Passes, and Whips are essential.

Israeli, Samba, Contra Weekend, English, World Culture Folk Dance

Coming up in March is the World Culture Folk Dance Competition in nearby Valdosta, GA. See the article.
 
Israeli Folk dancing is tonight Tuesday February 21 from 7:30 to 9:30.
 
Coming up is the Contra Dance Weekend with a Techno Contra Dance on Sunday at UF and English Country Dancing on Monday.
 
Sunday evening is week 6 of 6 for Swing 101, followed by Swing for more experienced dancers and then Hustle!

This is Serena Huang, the project director of GA state's official international festival. The event was held annually on March at Valdosta which is only one hour and 30 minutes away from Gainesville.
 
Could we please ask for your kind favor in inviting Gainesville's international folk dance talents to our 7th Annual World Culture Folk Dance Competition? The attached video clips may provide an insight of what the competition is all about. Dr. Kay Picart has served as the judge member for the past three years. She know us very well. World Dance, Salsa, Cha Cha, Tango, Waltz Brunch, Swing, Hustle

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,
 
Coming up in March is the World Culture Folk Dance Competition in nearby Valdosta, GA. See the article.
 
Kay teaches Salsa and Cha Cha this Friday night at 308 West. Stay afterwards for Dubravko's musicality lesson at UF Tango.
 
Swing and Sway also meets Friday, at the Boltin Center and UF Swing Club is at the UTC.
 
Saturday night is Tango Y Te at 308 West and the monthly Contra dance at the Boltin Center.
 
Sunday morning come out to 308 West for a lovely Waltz Brunch from 10:30 to 1:30.
 
Sunday night at 308 West from 6 to 7 is Swing 101 for new dancers. From 7 to 8:30 is Swing for experienced dancers. From 8:30 to 9:30 come out for the most fun, Hustle!

This is Serena Huang, the project director of GA state's official international festival. The event was held annually on March at Valdosta which is only one hour and 30 minutes away from Gainesville.

No Apologies, Israeli, Rio-Style Samba, Contra, Vintage Waltz Brunch

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,
 
No apologies. See the article.
 
Israeli Folk dancing tonight Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:30.
 
Coming up this weekend is a great combo of dancing with the monthly Saturday night Contra dance at the Boltin Center followed by the Sunday Vintage Waltz Brunch at 308 West.
 
Come back to 308 West Sunday evening for Swing 101, then Swing for more experienced dancers and then Hustle! This may be the last month for the frequent dancer rewards program, so take advantage.
 
Monday nights you have a double header, with Rio-Style Samba with Corey from 5 to 6, followed by English Country Dancing from 7 to 9:30, both at 308 West.
 
Later this month you have Gainesville's Contra Dance Weekend and an English Country Dance Festival.
 
International Folk dancing next meets Friday March 9.

Article: No Apologies - Dancing Means Never Having to Say You Are Sorry
 
The other day in my beginning swing class, I heard a guy say "I am sorry" to his partner.
 
A lot of the time when my partner apologizes, it happens after I tried something I never tried before and I caused the problem, not her. I like to say, "Dancing means never having to say your sorry. Always blame your partner."
 
Some dancing is too judgemental. I am not saying that because of the Sacred Grooving. I have been saying that since a friend of mine quit tango after four years of class, having never had the nerve to go to a milonga, because some people in class were so judgemental he could not enjoy himself, his words, not mine.
 
When my partner apologizes without my help in messing her up, I like to say, "That is OK. This is live. We are going to mess up some. When we shoot the video, we can do a re-take."
 
Everyone has to go through all the same stages. You do not need anyone's approval to have fun while you are learning. Do not apologize for how you are dancing. If you suck, as Christian would say, "embrace your suckiness."
 
The big problem is lack of confidence, not lack of skill. As the choreographer Moshiko Halevy says, "Make mistakes with confidence."
 
We need a new rule. Dance without apology.

English Country Dancing Join us for a Valentine's Day dance on Monday; Performance

Dear Dancers,
This Monday, February 13, a day early, we will be celebrating Valentine's day with some special dances:

Performance note: All dancers are invited to join in for a half hour performance on Saturday April 7 at noon at the Downtown Plaza for Viva Europe by the University of Florida. Our wonderful musicians, Hoggetowne Fancy, will accompany us. Thus far we have 4 ladies and 3 men signed up (and a potential uncommitted 4th man--you know who you are!!) This is the last call (you can let me know through Monday evening) if you are interested. We will be doing the dances on Monday evenings (since all are invited if they wish to participate) and hope to not have any special practices. Maybe a final walk through an hour before the dance that day. You should wear period clothing --or as close to it as you can. Women would wear an empire waist dress, ankle length; men, black trousers, white long sleeve shirt, solid color vest, and a cravat.
But please be assured that if you do not wish to perform, there is no pressure. Our first committment is for a regular, fun, inviting, weekly dance. To peform is only an invitation, not an expectation. We want all to feel included whether it's just dancing the weekly dance or performing, as they wish.

And remember the upcoming gods dance weekend where there will be a separate English Dance, the Winter White Ball (you don't need to attend or pay for the entire weekend). The information is below. You may have heard it is sold out--the weekend contra dance is...but you can come to the English dance on Sunday--it is separate.

No Apologies, Ballroom East Coast, Swing and Sway, Tango, Rio-style Samba, Big Band Swing

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,
 
No apology dancing. See the article.
 
Four dance events Friday night: Ballroom East Coast Swing with Kay at 308 West, Swing and Sway at the Boltin Center, UF Swing Club at the UTC and UF Tango Club at 308 West. All open to the public.
 
Two dance parties Saturday night: Ballroom Dance at Maria Alvarez and Tango Pavadita Milonga at 308 West. This may be Maria's last dance at Imperial Dance Studio, so go out there and make it a big evening.
 
Sunday evening at 308 West is your chance to dance without people tugging on you. We learn to communicate without the need for pushing and pulling on your partner.
 
Four dance sessions on Sunday at 308 West: Last session of Contra 101 from 5 to 6. Everyone welcome to join us. Free if you already know Contra. Swing 101 from 6 to 7 for new dancers. Swing for experienced dancers from 7 to 8:30. This month we are finishing up turning your Lindy and East Coast into West Coast Swing. You know, the people that first did West Coast Swing thought they were doing Lindy. Next month we will be back to Lindy. From 8:30 to 9:30 come out for the most exhilirating of dances Hustle! $10 for all of Sunday or take advantage of the Frequent Dancer Special. This may be the last month it is offered.

Article: No Apologies - Dancing Means Never Having to Say You Are Sorry
 
The other day in my beginning swing class, I heard a guy say "I am sorry" to his partner.
 
A lot of the time when my partner apologizes, it happens after I tried something I never tried before and I caused the problem, not her. I like to say, "Dancing means never having to say your sorry. Always blame your partner."
 
Some dancing is too judgemental. I am not saying that because of the Sacred Grooving. I have been saying that since a friend of mine quit tango after four years of class, having never had the nerve to go to a milonga, because some people in class were so judgemental he could not enjoy himself, his words, not mine.
 
When my partner apologizes without my help in messing her up, I like to say, "That is OK. This is live. We are going to mess up some. When we shoot the video, we can do a re-take."
 
Everyone has to go through all the same stages. You do not need anyone's approval to have fun while you are learning. Do not apologize for how you are dancing. If you suck, as Christian would say, "embrace your suckiness."
 
The big problem is lack of confidence, not lack of skill. As the choreographer Moshiko Halevy says, "Make mistakes with confidence."
 
We need a new rule. Dance without apology.
