Swing, Tango, Contra, Student Leadership

Hello Gainesville Ocala Area Dancers and Friends,
 
Richard Nalli is back with classes on Tuesday night.
 
Coming up in two weeks is the 2nd Annual Larry G. Shahboz Memorial Summer Dance to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, put on by our friends Marc and Joyce. This is a great event. Plan to attend.
 
The Orange Blossom Dance Festival is Orlando this weekend for Country Western and Swing dancers.

One of my favorite places to dance was at Parkes Hall at Northwestern University, which is the university's chapel. Phil Moss has been leading dancing there since the 1970s.
 
I first learned Israeli dancing there in 1989. I was working in Chicago and had gone to a Jewish singles party. The entertainment at the party was Israeli dancing, led by Phil. They left some flyers for their weekly session and that got me started.
 
This Thursday is their last night in Parkes Hall.
 
They got kicked out. No one is to blame. They became a community based group, with few students. They had the same problems we have. Here is the note I wrote to Phil.
 
Hello Phil,
 
If it makes you feel any better, the same thing happens here in Gainesville with many dance groups. I saw it in Miami too. Seen it happen with International, Swing and Tango groups too.
 
Doubt there is anything you could have reasonably been expected to do that would have gotten more students.
 
Without student leadership, you cannot keep students coming. You need students to bring other students.
 
The problem with students is, even if you manage to recruit some good ones, they graduate. Every year, you need to bring in new ones. It is hard to find ones that, as one of my friends said, "has the fire."
 
If you do find any that are real leaders, they want to run their own group.
 
You did a great job to have kept going there as long as you have.

Florida Folk Festival, Israeli, International, English

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,
 
The Florida Folk Festival is this weekend at Stephen Foster Memorial Park in White Springs, about an hour and half north of Gainesville off of I-75.
 
At 3:00 pm the Klezmer band Chutzpah is playing on the main stage. From 5 to 7 pm, I will be joining Chutzpah to lead a Klezmer dance on the Heritage stage. What is a Klezmer dance? Good question. I don't know, but I will think of something. Hope to see you there.

SwingDanceUSA, Tango, Florida Folk Festival

Hello Gainesville Ocala Area Dancers and Friends,
 
Friday starts Swing Dance USA in St. Petersburg. Go for the weekend or just the day. It is worth the trip. www.SwingDanceUSA.com.
 
UF Swing Club is not meeting this Friday because of Swing Dance USA.
 
Dubravko and Elke come to the rescue again this weekend with a Tango class and dancing this Friday night.
 
Next Wednesday June 2 join Josh and Brianne's at their monthly West Coast Swing dance at the Eagles Club.

Good News, Israeli, Men and Women, Shavuot International, English

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,
 
Congratulations to Karen Cohen leading what I believe to be was her first Israeli dance session. No Israeli Dancing at B'nai Israel this Thursday due to Shavuot.
 
Good news for Israeli Dancers and congratulations to Kol Simcha on their new building. Kol Simcha is holding regular Israeli Dancing on Wednesday nights led by the incomparable Joseph Simpkins.
 
Can women really teach men to lead and can men really teach women to follow? Tuesday night starts Shavuot the traditional holiday of study. See the article for the pitfalls of men and women studying together.

Article: Can Men and Women Study Together
 
A question that has been on my mind is can women really teach men and can men really teach women how to dance? Which brings us to ...
 
The holiday of Shavuot is 50 days after Passover, when the Jewish people received the Torah at Mount Sinai.
 
The tradition is that every Jewish soul was there and so there is a popular Jewish singles website called www.SawYouAtSinai.com.
 
While every other Jewish holiday is legislated with mitzvoth (laws from Hashem), Shavuot has none except to keep it as a day of rest. Consequently, Shavuot has possibly more minhag (customs) than any other holiday.
 
Among the minhag are studying all night (makes sense, we did get the Torah) and eating New York cheesecake (well we are Jewish). Traditionally men and women study separately, but today we frequently study together.
 
I heard a Rabbi speak about relationships and this is the story he told.
 
"The traditional male method for studying Jewish law is through argumentation. You get a study partner and argue over minutiae to get to the truth. A typical study session goes like this."
 
"First guy, 'Nu, so what do you think of such and such?'
 
"The second guy starts to respond when the first guy rudely interrupts, "What are you crazy? Did you even read the commentary? You missed the entire point!'
 
"And the argument begins. It gets your blood boiling. The discussions are heated and kibitzers jump in. We love it.
 
"So I was excited when my wife said to me one day that she wanted to study Torah with me.
 
"We got out the Torah portion and I said to her, 'Nu, so what do you think of such and such?'
 
"She was delighted that I asked her opinion. When she started to answer, I interrupted and said, "What are you crazy? Did you even read the commentary? You missed the entire point!'
 
"I was ready for the fun to begin, but to my shock, that did not go over so well.
 
"She started to cry.
 
"And that is one difference between men and women.
