Article: How to Get Free Pizza

After a year layoff, I recently started up Israeli dancing again. There were only three of us tonight, so we ended early.

That gave me time to get to 308 for English Country Dancing, which ended at 9:30, and from there over to Leonardo's in time for $1 a slice pizza before closing.

On my way in, a homeless guy, sitting outside the parking lot with his backpack, asked me for some food. I brushed him off.

The night before, there was a homeless guy hanging around when we came out from Salsa. I brushed him off too, but Richard gave him some money. I told Richard he should not give the guy money there, because we do not want him waiting for people to come out.

Two more homeless guys were camping out in the parking lot. They all had backpacks. Why were there so many and what happened to the plastic bags?

Richard told me to chase them off, but I told him I would rather have the police do it. I left them there yesterday, but we cannot have them there. It is bad for business. So far, I have not seen them again. Maybe they were passing through. That would answer my questions.

I ordered a slice of cheese pizza to go. It cost $3. No more dollar deals.

When I got back to the parking lot, the homeless guy said, "Can I have your leftovers."

I said, "These are not leftovers." I started to open my car door, then went back and handed the guy my pizza.

He said, "I really am hungry."

I said, "I know you are."

Better that the homeless guys congregate by Leonardo's than our place.

I started to drive out the back way, but decided I still wanted a slice of pizza, so I parked my car again and went in. I told the woman, "I need another slice. I gave mine to a homeless guy."

Then I asked her what happened to dollar-pizza before closing. She said they discontinued it.

While my pizza was being warmed up, we had an interesting discussion about homeless people.

She did not charge me for my pizza and I tipped her a dollar, so my $1 slice cost $4 dollars.

Article: How to Be Nice and Pick Up Chicks

Two weeks ago there was a bat mitzvah at the synagogue. Behind me was sitting a teenage girl who was by herself. I started talking to her. She went to Buchholz and was on the soccer team with the bat mitzvah girl. I introduced her to my nephew and they already knew each, at least from sight. They were both in the band.

Most people went in to lunch, but my sister and nephew were leaving. My sister said there were too many people she did not know. I told her Josh needed to go talk to that girl because she did not know anyone else, but they left anyway.

Those kind of opportunities do not happen every day. A cute girl from your High School, unescorted in your synagogue, in the band, on the girls soccer team, not knowing anyone and waiting for someone to talk to her. If only we knew then ...

Soon after that, on the Rikud (Israeli Dance) list, a woman complained she went to a group in a city she was visiting and nobody spoke to her.

Reminded me of a time at the JCC in Boca in Ira Weisburd's group. After playing basketball, I got to dancing late. I asked my cousin, "Who is the new guy?"

She said, "I don't know. I was going to meet him at the end."

I said to her, "That's not nice. That means he spends the whole evening not knowing anybody and feels out of place. You are supposed to introduce yourself right away, so he feels welcome."

At another group we used to go to, we used to joke that the oldtimers would not talk to you until you had been there for two years, because they did not know if you were coming back.

Article: Marty, Again - Save Yourself Some Heartache

A friend of mine had been taking lessons for a while, but never made it out dancing anywhere. He felt rejected every time he went. He said to me, "I can tell. The women run away from me." I danced with him. He was a good dancer and he was a nice looking guy. I tried to get him to go Contra Dancing where he would have a positive experience, but he was too discouraged. He had taken lessons for a few years and it was ashame he quit.

Last night was a long, crazy night of dancing, first Richard's Swing party at the Boltin Center and then the Tango Milonga at 308 West. After 5 hours, I was, as my dad would say, "a little punch drunk".

When I got home, I was too wound up to sleep, so I cut up an organic apple, doled out some local blueberries from Wards, topped with whip cream and my secret ingredients and put on the TV to settle down.

TCM host Robert Osborne was interviewing Ernest Borgnine, which was a treat and then Marty came on, my lucky night.

Angie (Marty's best friend): "How about calling up that big girl we picked up in the movies about a month ago up in the RKO Chester?...You know that big girl that was sittin' in front of us, with the skinny friend...Remember her name was Mary Feeny - we took 'em home all the way out in Brooklyn. What daya say? Think we ought to give 'em a call? I'll take the skinny one."

Marty: "She maybe got a date already, Ange...I didn't like her. I don't feel like calling her up."

...

When Marty gets home, he goes in his room and makes a phone call.

Marty: "...Oh, hello there. Is this Mary Feeney? Hello, there. This is Marty Pilletti. I-I wonder if you recall me. Well, I'm kind of a stocky guy. The last time we met was in the RKO Chester. You was with a friend of yours, and I-I was with a friend of mine, name of Angie. This was about a month ago - The RKO Chester on West Farms Square. Yeah, you was sitting in front of us, and we was annoying you, and - you got mad and - I'm the fella who works in a butcher shop. Oh, come on, you - you know who I am! That's right, and then - then we went to Howard Johnson's. We had hamburgers. You hadda milkshake. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, well, I'm the stocky one, the heavy-set fella. Yeah, well, I'm - I'm glad you recall me because I hadda pretty nice time that night, and I was wondering how everything was with you. How's everything? That's swell. Yeah, well, I tell you why I called. I was figuring on taking in a movie tonight, and I was wondering if you and your friend would care to see a movie tonight with me and my friend."

The camera zooms in slowly. Marty closes his eyes, he already knows he is going to get rejected.

Marty continues: "Yeah, tonight. Why, I know it's a little late to call for a date, but I didn't know myself till - yeah, I know."

Might as well make the rejection complete.

Marty: "Yeah, well, what about - well, how about next Saturday night? Are - are you free next Saturday night? Well, what about the Saturday after that? Yeah. Yeah, I know. Well, I mean, I understand that. Yeah. Yeah."

When Marty comes to dinner, his mother starts up with him.

Mrs. Pilletti: "Why don't you go to the Stardust Ballroom?"

...

Marty: "I chased after enough girls in my life. I-I went to enough dances. I got hurt enough. I don't wanna get hurt no more. I just called up a girl this afternoon, and I got a real brush-off, boy! I figured I was past the point of being hurt, but that hurt. Some stupid woman who I didn't even want to call up. She gave me the brush. No, Ma, I don't wanna go to Stardust Ballroom because all that ever happened to me there was girls made me feel like I was a-a-a bug. I got feelings, you know. I-I had enough pain. No thanks, Ma!"

...

Mrs. Pilletti: "Marty, put on the blue suit, huh?"

...

Marty: "All right, so I'll go to the Stardust Ballroom. I'll put on a blue suit, and I'll go. And you know what I'm gonna get for my trouble? Heartache. A big night of heartache."

While I was writing this newsletter I made this delicious bean soup, all organic, from stuff I had gotten from Wards. Yum. It is really good. Did not need to use any seasoning. If you have good ingredients, you do not need to add anything else.

Where was I? Oh, yeah.

Marty meets his wife that night.

Save yourself some heartache. Your life can change in a moment and you cannot predict the future.

While I was writing this newsletter I made this delicious bean soup, all organic, from stuff I had gotten from Wards. Yum. It is really good. Did not need to use any seasoning. If you have good ingredients, you do not need to add anything else.

Where was I? Oh, yeah.

Next Tuesday, Barbie teaches Basic Two-Step at Richard's class at the Boltin Center.

At 308 West, most Saturday nights we will be having Tango, but on the first Saturday of each month we will be having a special Swinging Soul Saturday Night Dance Party beginning February 5.

1. Thursday 1/27 - 10-Years of Swing Dancing Party

Gainesville Dance Association, 308 W University Avenue

9:00 - Midnight : Swing dancing

Free

Come celebrate with me my first ten years as a swing dancer. This means more to me than a birthday! And, of course, this calls for a dance!

I count my swing dancing career from the 27 January 2001 Student Honors Organization dance at Norman Gym. That's the night I saw how fun swing dancing could be and committed to regularly attending the Florida Swing Dancing Club until I learned to have fun like that. Little did I know the impact to be had on my life.

Thank-you to everyone who has touched my life over the past decade, especially all my dance teachers and the countless encouragers. I remember you fondly and keep passing your gifts on.

If you'd like, share something to eat or a non-alcoholic drink. Bring anyone you wish ...this would be a fun night to introduce a friend to swing dancing! =-D

Article: Now I Know How a Dog Feels and An Old Man and His Dog

Last Saturday night I was intending to go to the Contra dance, but somehow I got pulled into running the slideshow for a musical Rabbi visiting our synagogue.

He was on the bima, singing and playing the guitar.

I was in the front row, with my finger poised on the enter key, ready to show the next slide.

As I have written many times, my favorite show is the Dog Whisperer. I was sitting, staring up at my master, waiting for the tiniest gesture or facial expression for my instructions. I was worried, because I did not know how to go backwards and was afraid of changing a slide too soon. After a while, I could figure out when to change the slides before he gave me the signal. Now I know how a dog feels.

A friend of mine sent me this and I thought you might enjoy it.

----------------------

An Old Man and His Dog

"Watch out! You nearly broad sided that car!" My father yelled at me. "Can't you do anything right?"

Those words hurt worse than blows. I turned my head toward the elderly man in the seat beside me, daring me to challenge him. A lump rose in my throat as I averted my eyes. I wasn't prepared for another battle.

"I saw the car, Dad. Please don't yell at me when I'm driving."

My voice was measured and steady, sounding far calmer than I really felt.

Dad glared at me, then turned away and settled back. At home I left Dad in front of the television and went outside to collect my thoughts. Dark, heavy clouds hung in the air with a promise of rain. The rumble of distant thunder seemed to echo my inner turmoil. What could I do about him?

Dad had been a lumberjack in Washington and Oregon. He had enjoyed being outdoors and had reveled in pitting his strength against the forces of nature. He had entered grueling lumberjack competitions, and had placed often.

The shelves in his house were filled with trophies that attested to his prowess.

The years marched on relentlessly. The first time he couldn't lift a heavy log, he joked about it; but later that same day I saw him outside alone, straining to lift it. He became irritable whenever anyone teased him about his advancing age, or when he couldn't do something he had done as a younger man. Four days after his sixty-seventh birthday, he had a heart attack. An ambulance sped him to the hospital while a paramedic administered CPR to keep blood and oxygen flowing.

At the hospital, Dad was rushed into an operating room. He was lucky. He survived. But something inside Dad died. His zest for life was gone. He obstinately refused to follow doctor's orders.

Suggestions and offers of help were turned aside with sarcasm and insults.

The number of visitors thinned, then finally stopped altogether. Dad was left alone.

My husband, Dick, and I asked Dad to come live with us on our small farm. We hoped the fresh air and rustic atmosphere would help him adjust.

Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. It seemed nothing was satisfactory. He criticized everything I did. I became frustrated and moody. Soon I was taking my pent-up anger out on Dick. We began to bicker and argue.

Alarmed, Dick sought out our pastor and explained the situation. The clergyman set up weekly counseling appointments for us. At the close of each session he prayed, asking God to soothe Dad 's troubled mind.

But the months wore on and God was silent. Something had to be done and it was up to me to do it.

The next day I sat down with the phone book and methodically called each of the mental health clinics listed in the Yellow Pages. I explained my problem to each of the sympathetic voices that answered in vain.

Just when I was giving up hope, one of the voices suddenly exclaimed, "I just read something that might help you! Let me go get the article."

I listened as she read. The article described a remarkable study done at a nursing home. All of the patients were under treatment for chronic depression. Yet their attitudes had improved dramatically when they were given responsibility for a dog.

I drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. After I filled out a questionnaire, a uniformed officer led me to the kennels. The odor of disinfectant stung my nostrils as I moved down the row of pens. Each contained five to seven dogs. Long-haired dogs, curly-haired dogs, black dogs, spotted dogs all jumped up, trying to reach me. I studied each one but rejected one after the other for various reasons too big, too small, too much hair.

As I neared the last pen a dog in the shadows of the far corner struggled to his feet, walked to the front of the run and sat down. It was a pointer, one of the dog world's aristocrats. But this was a caricature of the breed.

Years had etched his face and muzzle with shades of gray. His hip bones jutted out in lopsided triangles. But it was his eyes that caught and held my attention. Calm and clear, they beheld me unwaveringly.

I pointed to the dog. "Can you tell me about him?"

The officer looked, then shook his head in puzzlement. "He's a funny one."

Appeared out of nowhere and sat in front of the gate. We brought him in, figuring someone would be right down to claim him. That was two weeks ago and we've heard nothing. His time is up tomorrow."

He gestured helplessly.

As the words sank in I turned to the man in horror. "You mean you're going to kill him?"

"Ma'am," he said gently, "that's our policy. We don't have room for every unclaimed dog."

I looked at the pointer again. The calm brown eyes awaited my decision.

"I'll take him," I said.

I drove home with the dog on the front seat beside me. When I reached the house I honked the horn twice. I was helping my prize out of the car when Dad shuffled onto the front porch... "Ta-da! Look what I got for you, Dad!"

I said excitedly.

Dad looked, then wrinkled his face in disgust. "If I had wanted a dog I would have gotten one. And I would have picked out a better specimen than that bag of bones. Keep it! I don't want it" Dad waved his arm scornfully and turned back toward the house.

Anger rose inside me. It squeezed together my throat muscles and pounded into my temples. "You'd better get used to him, Dad. He's staying!"

Dad ignored me. "Did you hear me, Dad?" I screamed.

At those words Dad whirled angrily, his hands clenched at his sides, his eyes narrowed and blazing with hate. We stood glaring at each other like duelists, when suddenly the pointer pulled free from my grasp. He wobbled toward my dad and sat down in front of him. Then slowly, carefully, he raised his paw.

Dad's lower jaw trembled as he stared at the uplifted paw. Confusion replaced the anger in his eyes. The pointer waited patiently. Then Dad was on his knees hugging the animal.

It was the beginning of a warm and intimate friendship. Dad named the pointer Cheyenne.

Together he and Cheyenne explored the community. They spent long hours walking down dusty lanes. They spent reflective moments on the banks of streams, angling for tasty trout. They even started to attend Sunday services together, Dad sitting in a pew and Cheyenne lying quietly at is feet.

Dad and Cheyenne were inseparable throughout the next three years. Dad 's bitterness faded, and he and Cheyenne made many friends. Then late one night I was startled to feel Cheyenne 's cold nose burrowing through our bed covers. He had never before come into our bedroom at night.

I woke Dick, put on my robe and ran into my father's room. Dad lay in his bed, his face serene. But his spirit had left quietly sometime during the night.

Two days later my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad 's bed. I wrapped his still form in the rag rug he had slept on. As Dick and I buried him near a favorite fishing hole, I silently thanked the dog for the help he had given me in restoring Dad 's peace of mind.

The morning of Dad's funeral dawned overcast and dreary. This day looks like the way I feel, I thought, as I walked down the aisle to the pews reserved for family. I was surprised to see the many friends Dad and Cheyenne had made filling the church. The pastor began his eulogy. It was a tribute to both Dad and the dog who had changed his life.

And then the pastor turned to Hebrews 13:2. "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it."

"I've often thanked God for sending that angel," he said.

For me, the past dropped into place, completing a puzzle that I had not seen before: the sympathetic voice that had just read the right article.

Cheyenne's unexpected appearance at the animal shelter, his calm acceptance and complete devotion to my father, and the proximity of their deaths. And suddenly I understood. I knew that God had answered my prayers after all.

Life is too short for drama or petty things, so laugh hard, love truly and forgive quickly. Live While You Are Alive. Forgive now those who made you cry. You might not get a second time.

God answers our prayers in His time, not ours.
