Welcome and thank you to all of you that came to yesterday's
week 1 of our Super Simple West Coast Swing beginner series.
Congratulations on what I hope was a fun and informative class.
If there was anything you did not get, do not worry, you will.
Everyone that shows up learns to dance, everyone.
If you missed the first week of this series, you can still join
us for any of the other weeks.
Next Sunday, after our class, Marrie Robinson is giving a class
in Movement Pattern and Free Style Dancing. This will be a
great class to help you move your body to music.
If you signed up for the month, you can take the Movement Pattern
class for $3.
If you are paying by the day, $10 general ($5 students) the Movement
Pattern class is included at no extra charge.
You can take just the Movement Pattern class for $7.
Tuesday night, only eight blocks away, is Mostly Swing dancing
with Richard Nalli. Get in a second night of dancing and practice
what you learned. They cover the same material in a different way.
On Saturday, May 23, come to the Florida Folk Festival at Stephen Foster
Memorial Park in White Springs. I will be leading a Klezmer dance for the
band Chutzpah. This is going to be a little like contra dancing to Jewish
music. Not really, but it should be easy, fun, hot and sweaty.
Happy Dancing,
Andy

Article: Review Class 1 for Super Simple West Coast Swing
Here is what we learned in class 1 (I hope).
1. Counting to music.
The music was in phrases of eight beats.
We counted numbers 1 to 8 for each beat.
2. We stepped in single time to the music,
stepping once on each beat.
3. We learned how to take a triple-step,
which is 3 steps on 2 beats of music.
We did two of these in a row, which we counted
three-and-four five-and-six
4. We added two single steps in the beginning to
get a basic 6-count West Coast Swing rhythm,
which we counted:
one two three-and-four five-and-six
5. We learned to make a connection with our partner
and to communicate by shifting our balance.
We learned that everyone maintains their own balance
and everyone does their own dancing. We learned to
communicate through our center without pushing and
pulling on our partner.
6. We learned how to step by keeping our weight
on our supporting leg.
7. We learned how to move forward and backward on
a line with our partner in time to music using
our 6-count rhythm.
8. We learned to finish our movement on count 4,
so we could do five-and-six in place.
9. We learned that all swing dances have the basic rhythm
one two three-and-four
any number of optional step step
anchor-in-place with a triple step at the end
10. We learned the dance Bala, which is a cha cha and
is similar to swing in the mix of step step and
triple-steps.
Homework assignment: train your body to do
one two three-and-four five-and-six
