090625 Israeli Dancing

Hello Gainesville Area Israeli Dancers and Friends,

Israeli Dancing at B'nai Israel on Thursday.

International Folk Dancing (IFD) on Friday. Israeli dancing
is a big part of IFD. Yoav Ashriel, our guest instructor
this year, choreographed some of the most popular Israeli
dances done in IFD. The first half of the evening is teaching.
For the most part, IFD is significantly easier than Israeli
dancing. In general, there is more teaching, simpler dances,
taught at a slower pace, fewer dances and the dances are
repeated more frequently from year to year. There is a wide
mix of dances from all over the world. If you have not been,
give IFD a try. Even if you are a beginner, you can keep up.

West Coast Swing and Dance Practicum on Sunday.
This Sunday we will be holding a short lesson and then have
dancing. This will be our last session until August, so we
will leave more time to dance.

Thanks to everyone who came and made for such a nice party
last week. The owner is working on improving the AC.

Thanks to Michael for coming to my dance class at Santa Fe.
See the article for details.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Article: Israeli Dancing, Jewish Spirituality and Shabbat

The class at Santa Fe is a Community Education Spirituality
and Religion series, mainly for seniors. Had some time to connect
the dances to the spirituality. Here is a little bit of that.

An observant Jewish male prays three times a day.
That is a lot of praying when you have a busy schedule for work.
During the week, prayers are rushed, but on Shabbat, we have
nothing pressing to do, so we can take our time.
The way we take our time is by singing. One of the things we
sing is a nigun, which is a melody without words. So I taught
the first dance, Nigun Atik, ancient melody. Thanks to Erin
working with my singing, I braved singing a nigun in front
of everyone, all by myself. Think Michael can confirm it was
not horrible.

God did create at least one thing on Shabbat and that is the soul.
On Erev Shabbat, Friday night, we welcome the Sabbath bride, the
bridegroom being the people Israel. To start the service we sing
Yedid Nefesh, meaning soul mate, and so we learned the dance to
Yedid Nefesh.

The last dance we learned was Tzadik Katamar. There is a psalm
for each day of the week. Psalm 92 is for Shabbat and the most
well-known line starts Tzadik Katamar, the righteous shall flourish
like a cedar in Lebanon. There is a legend of the Lamed-Vov, the 36
Tzadikim, righteous people who do not even know they are one of them,
their existence holds the world together.

Water fluoridation

Dear Friends, Colleagues, Neighbors:

This is a first alert that I have started a ball rolling in Gainesville toward the goal of getting the city and GRU to stop adding
industrial waste to our water supply. Yes, the fluoride added to our water is hydrofluorosilicic acid, scrubbed from the stacks of
phosphate fertilizer plants. It's the only water additive in the world that is added not to improve the water quality but to
medicate the people. I'm tired of trying to expensively filter it out or buying bottled water, and I resent being medicated without
my informed consent. Fluoride can work topically but there is no need to swallow it in uncontrolled doses and risk bone cancer,
osteoporosis, arthritis, thyroid suppression, and other conditions linked to fluoride's toxicity -- did you know it's as poisonous
as lead and arsenic? Kids today get too much from many sources like food, drinks, toothpaste, air pollution, etc. (1/3 of US kids
show dental fluorosis =OD), and we should be looking for ways to lower the overall exposure. This would also save Gainesville
citizens money since we buy this industrial waste.

Fluoridation was started in the 1940s, way before there were any good scientific studies. Now that there is a large amount of
information on this, the time has come to re-examine the issue, not only in terms of efficacy and safety, but also as to medical
ethics and our right to drink undrugged water coming out of our taps. And if you're one of those people who drinks 10 glasses of
water/day, you're getting an awful lot of fluoride.

I talked with our mayor, Pegeen Hanrahan, two days ago about this issue. She seemed sympathetic and is scheduling an open meeting
with city commission members in a few weeks, which will be late on a Thursday afternoon. I would like as many people as possible who
are against fluoridation to show up. If you might be interested, let me know and I'll tell you the exact time as soon as I know it.

In addition, if you have a science or environmental background, or medical or dental training, or some other related "expert"
status, we need you. If you know someone local who might speak on this issue who has credibility as an "expert," please let me know
that too.

To educate yourself about the facts, go to http://www.fluoridealert.org/. I also have burned copies of their excellent 28-minute DVD
and will be happy to lend you one or sell you one for $1 to offset my costs.

Please spread the word. Let's get some letters to the editor going too.

Thanks,
Karen Eberly

090619 Sunday June 21 Dance Social, lots of dance news

Hello Gainesville Area Dancers and Friends,

Lots of dance news this week.

The big item is this Sunday June 21 is the longest day of the year
and we are having a dance social. We will be playing mostly slower
music suitable for all types of swing and other social dancing.

Everyone is invited. There will be a short lesson on how to turn
your Lindy, East Coast or any other type of swing moves into West
Coast Swing, followed by the dance social. Come out and see our
new location at 601 South Main Street. Class starts exactly at 6:30,
dancing at 7:30 until dark (9:30).

Thanks to Michael for coming to my dance class at Santa Fe.
See the article for details.

Tango this Friday night is at Irene's house. See details below.
There is no tango Saturday night, so come out to the Contra dance.
Next week, tango instructor Mimi Santapa from Argentina is here
in Gainesville. Her father was a famous tango instructor and
they focus on balance, one of my favorite subjects.

Looks like we are going to get a pretty skyline of oil
platforms off our gulf shore in Florida. If your boat sinks,
you will be only a short swim away from the nearest one.
If you want to help oil companies make more money and delay
the growth of renewable energy resources, do not sign this petition.

Article: Israeli Dancing, Jewish Spirituality and Shabbat

The class at Santa Fe is a Community Education Spirituality
and Religion series, mainly for seniors. Had some time to connect
the dances to the spirituality. Here is a little bit of that.

In an observant Jewish community, the center piece of Jewish
spirituality is Shabbat. The bible starts with Bereisheit,
in the beginning God created the universe in six days,
rested on the seventh and commanded us to do likewise.

An observant Jewish male prays three times a day.
That is a lot of praying when you have a busy schedule for work.
During the week, prayers are rushed, but on Shabbat, we have
nothing pressing to do, so we can take our time.
The way we take our time is by singing. One of the things we

090609 Proposal for using 601 dance space

Hello Gainesville Dance Leaders,

Here is a proposal for using the 601 dance space.

This is not a legal document. There is no commitment on the
part of anyone in regards to this document.

This is something that I thought might work for everyone.
Let me know if this works for you or not.

If you would like to participate in the use of the 601 dance
space, contact me or David Chayes david.chayes@gmail.com.
If you are not going to use the space, but would like to
participate in joint marketing efforts, contact us.

Thank you,
Andrew

Andrew Weitzen

-----------------------------------------------------------

Proposal for using 601 dance space

1. Date: Monday June 9, 2009
Location: 601 S Main Street

2. Parties Involved
Stephen Boyes, Owner
David Chayes, Manager
Christian Campbell, Dance Group Leader - Balboa
Marrie Robinson, Dance Group Leader - Freestyle
Piper Call, Dance Group Leader - Irishsheer
Veronica Lane, Dance Group Leader - Zumba
Andrew Weitzen, Dance Group Leader - Swing

3. Document of Understanding

This document holds no legally enforceable provisions.

This is only a document of understanding of how we intend to proceed.

While the clauses in this document seem reasonable to me at this moment,
we do not know what reality will bring. This document should be used as
a guide. We should all feel to raises issues and make changes as needed.

Until we start signing leases, the only legally binding agreement
we have is that established by Florida law. Since we are all renting
on a short term basis, I believe our obligations are only for the
period of time for which we paid or received payment.

Other than that, you should not feel stuck with anything you have said
so far, nor should you hold anyone to what they have said if they have
changed their mind. Everyone needs to be happy with whatever arrangements
we make as we go along.

4. Costs

The monthly costs are about $2,600 with utilities,
being higher in the summer and lower in the winter.

This proposal sets forth a plan to get the income
to $2,600 by the end of this year.

The owner has said that he can give us time to reach
the $2,600 level, indicating a time frame of around
the end of 2009 and start of 2010.

Please note that $2,600 is meant to approximate the
costs which may be higher or lower and could change
from year to year. Ultimately, the expenses for the
mortgage (as it is currently), taxes, insurance,
utilities, maintenance and capital improvements need
to be met to make this project viable.

5. Air Conditioning

We are going to live with the AC until we have enough
income to justify a capital expense to upgrade the AC.

6. Management

We propose that David Chayes rent 601 from Stephen Boyes
and manage the dance space.

David will be responsible for all aspects of the dance
space as far as the other dance groups are concerned.

Any fixed improvements David wishes to make to the property
need to be negotiated with the owner, with the understanding
that this project may not continue beyond the next month.

7. Dance Leadership Committee

We will form a committee consisting of all the people
that rent the space from David. We will meet as needed,
hopefully not more than once a month.

The committee will have these responsibilities:
- Assist in negotiations between David and Stephen
- Joint marketing, special events and other ways
to grow attendance to increase the income
- Management oversight to make sure our needs are
being met and the place is maintained

8. Insurance

As David will be the sole renter from Stephen, David will
preferably incorporate a LLC and provide a certificate of
insurance to Stephen that will cover all of us. This was
how GDMA functioned.

9. Income

Monthly Rentals Weekly Income Projection
$225 - $45 per night 6:30-9:30 Sunday through Thursday
$210 - $30 two hour classes 4:30-6:30 every day
$75 - Friday night
$125 - Saturday night
-----
$635
$2,540 - 4 weeks per month

This essentially meets the $2,600 monthly cost.

Additional income from special events, day time rentals,
concessions and other income methods.

Note: this income is based on past GDMA rental rates.
Theoretically, a managed dance facility should add value
and significantly increase our attendees. If we can all
double our attendees, and our numbers are small we should
be able to do that, then we can increase the rents say
by 10+% and there are profits for everyone.

A full building is better for all of us, as bringing people
by for one class helps our marketing efforts for other classes.

10. Schedule to Generate Income

To reach the income levels above, we need to rent:
5 - $45 nights
7 - $30 late afternoons
1 - Friday night
1 - Saturday night

Currently rented (prices may vary) are:
$90 - 2 x $45 nights (Irishsheer, Swing beginning August)
$90 - 3 x $30 late afternoons (two Zumba, one freestyle)
$125 - 1 x Saturday night
----
$305 - per week
$1,220 - per month

Half-way there!

Our goal should be to reach the $2,000+ level by
some time in October. Which sets sales goals of:

$90 - 2 x $45 nights
$90 - 3 x $30 late afternoons (two Zumba, one freestyle)
$75 - 1 x Friday night
----
$255 - per week new sales
$1,020 - per month new sales
$2,240 - per month total

This still leaves these openings:

$45 - 1 x $45 nights
$30 - 1 x $30 afternoon
? - 7 x Day time rentals

11. Rental Payments to the Owner and Payment for David's Efforts

All late afternoon and night time rental receipts should
be marked for the owner during this period.

All day time rental receipts, receipts for special events
above the normal rentals, concessions and other income should
go to David.

As of November 1, to incent David to focus on receipts for the
owner and to protect the owner, if the owner's rental receipts
are below the $2,240 level, all additional income that David
brings in as the manager should first go to make up the short
fall.

12. Rents for Individual Groups

This section keeps intact the current rates each person
is paying and provides for a way to charge others.

This a suggested maximum rental rate for one-hour,
which should be posted online and publicly available.

Maximum Hourly Rental Rates for One Hour Rentals
- $15 per hour
before 6 pm Monday-Friday
after 10 pm Sunday-Thursday
- $20 per hour
6 - 10 pm Sunday-Thursday
before 6 pm Saturday and Sunday
- $25 per hour
6 pm - midnight Friday
- $30 per hour
6 pm - midnight Saturday

Rates should be discounted for regulars to encourage year long
monthly rentals and fill empty time slots. People that are easy
to rent to provide consistent income at negligible marketing
and management costs.

Suggested discounts

A. Regular monthly $20/hourly rentals should be charged at a
discount of $5 per hour, with an additional discount of $5
for every 3 hours. This brings us inline with the GDMA rates.
For hours under or above $20, discounts might be a little
less or a little more.

B. Monthly rates should be charged on a basis of 4 weeks
per month, with no charge for the 1/3 extra day, allowing
groups to pass on the monthly discount to their members
and encourage more participation.

C. Give discounts or free hours when there are empty time slots
in exchange for services, volunteer work, participation
on the Leadership Committee and as prizes.

Additional Charges

A. Any events that require extra maintenance should be
charged extra.

13. Class Prices

Since we have a manager for this facility, this adds value to
our programs. Also the pooling of our resources and marketing
efforts also adds value. Our class prices should reflect this.

If you are looking for regular attendees, consider offering
monthly prices and make your class rate one-half the monthly rate.
If your monthly rate is $20, make your individual classes $10.

Suggested individual class prices should be $8 to $15.

Sell the benefits to your attendees of what they get for the
extra money:
- Classy atmosphere
- Beautiful, large dance floor
- Mirrored walls
- Clean, well-maintained facility
- Concessions they can purchase
- Possibly free snacks
- Ameneties: nice tables, chairs, water dispenser, cups
- Lots of parking in fenced area, part of Acrosstown Repetory complex
- Plus the benefits of being part of multiple groups,
bringing in new people, joint programs

14. Marketing Committee

We all need to help out and jointly market all our programs,
grow our groups and assist David in renting the space.

We should form a marketing committee to handle these responsiblities,
which should meet monthly and put into effect a marketing plan.

090609 Meeting about using 601 dance space

Hello Gainesville Dance Leaders,

The Gainesville Dance and Music Association is now defunct,
the location at 308 W University has been sold and is no longer
available to us as a dance space.

I personally would like to thank Ben, Tara and Aidan Bolker,
family and friends, and the former owners of the space for
their hard work and financial support that allowed us to dance
for the last three or four years. I know they put their time,
money and soul into GDMA without financial reward for our benefit.
Please let them know your appreciation.

A number of us have been on the look out for another dance space.
David Chayes had been renting space from the Brazilian Culture Arts
group at 601 S Main Street. The Brazilians have moved to Jacksonsville
and David wants to take over the space and manage it for dance groups.

We met Monday night with the owner of 601 to discuss this possibility.

Here are the meeting minutes. If your interpretation differs significantly
from mine, please let me know.

Thank you,
Andrew

Meeting Minutes

1. Date: Monday June 8, 2009 6:45 - 7:45
Location: 601 S Main Street

2. Attendees
Stephen Boyes, Owner
Christian Campbell
David Chayes
Marrie Robinson
Piper Call
Veronica Lane
Andrew Weitzen

3. Costs
Stephen Boyes provided us with a breakdown of expenses.
The cost of the space is about $2,100 per month plus
utilities and sales tax, which pushes the monthly expenses
to around $2,600.

4. Air Conditioning
We discussed the air conditioning situation.
About the coolest we can get the room during hot times
is about 75 degrees. This feels fine when we are sitting
around, but when dancing is sure to work up a sweat.
The owner is willing to upgrade the AC if we are going
to lease the room long term. We all agreed we could live
with the AC for now.

5. Insurance

The owner wants us to have insurance and
to name him on the certificate.

6. Rents for Individual Groups

Here were the published GDMA rental rates.
- $12 per hour weekday off-peak
before 6 pm and after 11 pm, Monday-Friday
- $15 per hour weekday prime time
6-11 pm, Monday-Thursday
- $15 per hour weekend off-peak
before 5 p.m. and after midnight Saturday; all Sunday
- $20 per hour Friday prime time
6-11 pm Friday
- $25 per hour Saturday prime time
5 pm to midnight Saturday

For the groups involved in this meeting,
these are the acceptable rates. Increase
on these rates would likely cause people
to look elsewhere.

The owner's asking rates were:
- Half Day Rental $50.00
- Half Day Utillties $25.00
- Sales Tax $5.06
- TOTAL Half Day Total = $80.06
- Full Day Rental $100.00
- Full Day Utilities $30.00
- Sales Tax $8.78
- TOTAL One Day Rental Total = $138.78

These rates are inline with GDMA rates,
however our groups only use the room for
two or three hours at a time.

7. Management
The owner prefers not to manage the room for individual
groups and would prefer we do it.

None of us were inclined to do the work to form another
GDMA and take on the work of managing the place.

David wants to manage the place and make a business
out of it.

8. Proposal

The owner asked that we make a proposal to him as
a group. He needs to make his expenses and can give us
some time to fill the space to generate the income needed.

The proposal is to have David rent the space and
run the room as his business.

David will collect rents from us charged similarly to
GDMA and he will pay the owner. We will put a plan in
place to increase the income to $2,600 by the end of
this year.

We will help David to be successful, and each other,
by joint marketing, running special events, renting the
room during the day for private lessons and other means.

I will email you a more detailed plan separately.
