Stop Congress from passing laws to benefit themselves

From: lg 257

I don't usually send these-but something's got to give!

It's at least a start…
An idea whose time has come.
For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress.  Many citizens have no idea that members of Congress can retire with the same pay after only one term, that they don't pay into Social Security, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must live under those laws.  The latest is to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform that is being considered...in all of its forms.  Somehow, that doesn't seem logical.  We now have an elite that is above the law.  I truly don't care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever.  The self-serving must stop.  There is at least one way to start.  It is an idea whose time has come.

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution
"Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States."
If you agree, then please send this to your Senators and Representatives and forward it to a minimum of 20 people on your address list and ask each of those to do likewise.
In three days, congress and most people in The United States of America will have the message.
This is one proposal that really should be passed around.

You are one of my 20.

Florida population growing again - bad thing

UF writes about more people moving to Florida as "a hopeful sign". We already have way too many people. More people is bad for Florida. More people means more destruction of the environment, more water shortages, more polution, more crowding, more traffic, more urban sprawl. Some people benefit financially from more people, but all of us suffer from a deteriorating quality of life. Florida can flourish without more people. Florida does not need more development to grow people's quality of life, just the opposite. Florida needs to go to work on improving what is here now, environmental restoration, infrastructure, servicing existing residents and tourism. Say no to more population growth. We need population reduction.

Florida expected to start adding residents again after population decline

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — It's a small bounce, but Florida's population should rebound this year from its first loss in more than half a century in a hopeful sign for the struggling state economy, new estimates from the University of Florida show.

The Sunshine State is expected to add about 23,000 residents between April 1, 2009, and April 1, 2010, following a loss of almost 57,000 residents the previous year, according to population projections released today by UF's Bureau of Economic and Business Research.

"Based on changes in electric customer data, we believe Florida's population has increased slightly over the past year," said bureau Director Stan Smith who led the research. "This may be an indication the state's economy is no longer declining at the rate it had been before."

Swing, English Country, Ballroom, Art

Hello Gainesville Ocala Area Dancers and Friends,

UF Swing Club is at the UTC Friday. Tango Encanto meets this Friday also.

Richard Tuesday, Josh Wednesday and Judi Thursday keep the swinging going.

Sunday is a double dance of English Country and Contra, with a pot-luck meal in between.

Sociable and easy enough for beginners.

Free, three-week beginner clogging dance class starts April 18 with Kelli. She only does this once a year, so take advantage of this opportunity to make some noise with your feet. Great fun for all ages.

Here is a West Coast Swing video with some ideas for breaks. (Plus it is a big guy with a little lady. I like that.)

Our own Cyd Robbin's is a strange and wonderful artist. The only way to do justice to these master works is to see them in context, surrounded by them in her house. Ask her to do a show at her home.

Last Friday night of the month art walk is downtown Gainesville this week. Great way to spend Friday night. Starts at 7 pm.

Article: Contra and Tango

Went to drop off my nephew Saturday evening after synagogue on my way to Tango.

His house was dark. Felt bad leaving him alone, so I took Josh to the Contra dance instead.

Took us about eight minutes to get to the Contra dance and we passed the Tango place on the way.

Is Gainesville great or what?

Made me think of Teo and Marsha Bartek. All the years they put in laying the foundation of our Tango community. Sometimes they would have a class and I would be the only one there, but they still peristed.

We owe our wealth of dancing to many people, many of whom we do not know and none who get enough credit.

Josh is 14. At the Contra dance he marches right up to the cutest college chicks and asks them to dance. I worry about him.

He might not develop a healthy fear of girls his own age. I am afraid he will not develop properly. You have to crawl before you walk. If you go straight to walking, your brain misses out on important skills.

What are the consequences of having confidence with girls before you earned it? It would by like getting a blackbelt without going through the years of training. You have the power without the discipline. Plus he is in band. If you saw American Pie, you know what that means.

For my first three years of Tango, I could not take a single step forward. For the last two years, I have been able to step forward, but I know it was bad, and so I could not get better.

I have a theory (surprise), that social dancing has to be easy enough for a normal person to learn. No normal person is going to spend five years learning to take a step. Either Tango is not social dancing and is only for an esoteric community, or there is an easy way to step, but no one has explained it in a way I could understand.

Last month I had a break through. I think I figured out how to step. I have had faux breakthroughs before, one step forward and two steps back, so time will tell, but I have had some positive evidence.

At the Contra dance I tried my break through on Julie during the waltz. She moved so early, it surprised me.

Normally at my Tango class, the feedback I get from Andrea is, "No, no, better." When I tried my new technique she said, "Yes, that's it!"

It takes about 1 minute to learn (five years down the drain). Let me know if you want me to show it to you.

Article: Pesach (Passover) Kvetching

Rabbi Avrohom Lipszyc of Bal Harbor says

Now here is an interesting law. One may never kvetch over having to do a mitzvah. However, one may kvetch over Passover cleaning. Why? Because the cleaning isn't the mitzvah. Not having chometz in your possession on Passover is the mitzvah. Therefore, one may not kvetch about not being able to have chometz on Passover, but one may kvetch about Passover cleaning.

Therefore, we may never kvetch about the dancing, but we may kvetch about the refreshments.

Tonight Wednesday Eagles Club West Coast Swing Dance Party

Fellow Leprechauns & Leprech-ettes,

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!!

As you are no doubt aware, today is Saint Patty's Day, and we are having a gigantic-amazing-spectacular-blowout Swing Party this week!

I received no song requests, so you are all completely at the mercy of my person song selections. So expect lot's of Britney Spears, Vanilla Ice, and MC Hammer songs! Mwahahahahaha!!!

Just kidding. *shudder*

Don't forget that we are passing on the finger foods this time around so that we can avail ourselves to the traditional Corned Beef, Cabbage, Potatoes, and Carrots etc. that the club is fixing up for us. It is $7 a plate, and they start serving at 6:00 p.m. It is a fundraiser for the Club, so come early and come hungry!

Don't forget that we are handing out tickets for some fun door prizes as well as an extra spiffy Grand Prize, but only to those wearing green! And again, buttons or beads don't count; I want to see a major article of green clothing or no prize for you!!

*glares menacingly, but the effect is ruined by Josh's uncanny resemblance to a Leprechaun*

Speaking of green clothing and prizes, the person with the most wacky/cool/embarrassingly-devoid-of-fashion-sense Saint Patty's themed outfit gets a special prize!

Same admission as ever; $3 for members and $5 for non-members.  As a bonus, the color of your money is on-theme with the Holiday. Which just goes to show that Leprechauns have infiltrated the US Government and are conspiring to make everything green! Also, I have it on good authority that Soylent Green is people. Just sayin'...

The fun starts at 7:00 p.m. so don't miss it!

Well, my Excel just informed me I can't use any more exclamations marks without paying additional licensing fees, so I will bid a "Top o' the Day to ye"  and see you tonight!

(Dang, that last exclamation mark is going to cost me! *facepalm*  And I did it again…)

Josh "Kissed the Blarney Stone… several times" Angel

Joshua Angel and Brianne Nelson are mainly teaching West Coast Swing at the Eagles Club: 4562 NW 13th Street, Gainesville Florida. The classes are taught on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Donations of $3 for Eagles Club members & $5 for non-members please.

Josh & Brianne are not professional dancers or teachers, but we are looking to help people learn this fun dance and make the Eagles Club a dance haven!

BACK STAGE
MARCH 2010

FUSED TUTU
Proudly presented by Sweetwater Branch Inn

An extraordinary evening of dance! AUDACIOUS!

WHEN:  FUSED TUTU
WHEN:    March 27th @ 7:30 PM
WHERE:    Phillips Center for the Performing Arts
TICKETS:    $15-$35 @ Phillips Center box office & Ticketmaster

Before the performance, join us at aTALK & TOAST at 6:30 PM in the Fackler Foyer West.  You will have the opportunity to meet our special guests:

* Liston Bochette, III:    Olympian/drawing (decathlon & bobsled)
* Cathy Oerter:  Widow of Al Oerter Olympian/painting (discus)
* Stella Sung:    Composer
* Larry Young:  Olympian/sculptor (race walk)

THEN ... join us for FUSED TUTU.  Associate Director and Principal Dancer Andre Valladon will take you on a journey from that most romantic of ballets, Giselle, to the most classical, the Black Swan Pas de deux from Swan Lake, to a Cossack-style high flying character dance.  He then climbs on his motorcycle to take you on a wild ride for a contemporary twist - an exotic fusion of dance forms and styles.   Latin, Chinese, Hip-Hop, Contemporary, Jazz, African, Modern ... all mixed together as only Kim Tuttle can do!  Special guests for this section include African expert Omoniyi Osoba, hip-hop expert Courtney Holmes and the amazing DAZZLERS from the UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA!

The final part of the program, SOAR, is the result of a partnership between DANB and Art of the Olympians/AOTO. The common thread between both organizations is the well-known Olympic ideal of the 'pursuit of excellence'.

Part I, The Dream,  is inspired by Liston Bochette's 'Affirmation' and features Beth Ann Maslinoff with Elitsa Zafirova, Rostislav Dzabraev and Eivar Martinez with music by Composer In Residence Stella Sung.

Part II, The Passion,  inspired by Larry Young's 'Tango', features Andre Valladon and Michelle Incollingo dancing to Stella Sung's 'Tango Zarabande' , recorded live by pianist Kevin Sharpe.

Part III, The Athlete, is in memory of Al Oerter; Olympian, artist, gentleman.  His 'Ignite', 'Blueness' and '8th Movement' serve as backdrops for the dancers.  Heather Martinez, Eivar Martinez, Reka Gyulai, Rostislav Dzabraev, Isabel Garcia-Rose, Tak Kwan Chu and Carla Amancio dance to music provided by Kurt Bestor and Sam Cardon - produced for the Olympics.

Part IV, The Celebration, features the entire cast in a breath-taking finale; each holding the flag of their country of origin while dancing to the powerful music of Stella Sung.  Guaranteed to bring you to your feet!

Following the performance, join us for
a  RECEPTION honoring all of our artists
in the Fackler Foyer East hosted by
The Friends of Dance Alive National
Ballet.

Tickets for the performance range from
$15 to $35 and are available at the
Phillips Center box office and all Ticket-
master outlets.  There is no charge for
the TALK & TOAST or RECEPTION.

A very special "Thank You" to Sweetwater Branch Inn for sponsoring FUSED TUTU.
The management and staff at the Inn have been particularly helpful in the production of this performance.  Our special guests during this past month were charmed.  They said they "felt as if they were in a magical story book".

HOW BIG IS IT!

'Tango' under construction. Missing its 3' round platform!
It's REALLY REALLY BIG!

Artistic Director Kim Tuttle selected sculptor Larry Young's "Tango" for the a pas de deux featuring Andre Valladon and Michele Incollingo that is titled "The Passion".  Mr. Young generously offered to provide the actual sculpture.  When we explained that we intended to tour the work, he provided permission to replicate his work and sent a smaller casting.  Gainesville artist Paul Costanza was given the job of duplicating the work so that it could be toured.  You will remember Paul's work from earlier DANB productions; the amazing Ganesh in Mata Hari, the huge jackal in Queen of the Night and the exquisite praying angels from A Mass Celebration.

This work had to be light enough to travel AND be able to be hung or turned. Many phone calls between Paul, Kim and Larry  resulted in a magnificent piece of art.  It is HUGE!   Over 15 feet and absolutely gorgeous.  We can hardly wait for Larry to see it!

When not on tour, the work will be on display at the Al Oerter Center of Excellence in Ft. Lauderdale; home of AOTO.

AOTO's Al Oertoer Center of Excellence Opens
Cathy Oerter and Liston Bochette III at the ribbon cutting of the opening of the Al Oerter Center of Excellence in Ft. Myers, FL..

DANB Artistic Director Kim Tuttle, Associate Director/Principal Dancer Andre Valladon, Composer In Residence Stella Sung, Principal Dancer Carla Amancio, Resident Choreographer Judy Skinner and Trainer Tim Heflin were special guests at the opening of AOTO's Center of Excellence.

As part of the opening ceremony, dancers Andre Valladon and Carla Amancio performed Bailero.

A highlight of the event was the opportunity to meet and talk to Olympians Bob Beamon (long jump) and Cameron Myler (luge), artists DANB hopes to work with for 2011 projects.  Ms. Myler commented, "your dancers were phenomenal!"

When not on tour, art work that has been developed for SOAR will be on display at the Al Oerter Center of Excellence.

To the right, the large reception area of the Center of Excellence. Carla Amancio and Andre Valladon in the final pose from Bailero.   Guests were amazed at the artistry.    Prior to the opening, Mr. Valladon conducted a master class at Cypress Lake High School for advanced dance students in their performing arts program. Patty Gair, director of the program, reflected upon the time when she studied dance in Ft. Myers and DANB came to perform when there was no other professional dance around.  One of the students taking the class remarked that she was inspired to study dance after being selected by Kim Tuttle for the role of 'Soldier' in DANB's Nutcracker performance in Ft. Myers.  All in all, a wonderful experience!

Born in Guangzhou, China in 1948, he trained at the Beijing Ballet School and danced with Hong Kong Ballet and Hartford Ballet before joining DANB as Princip[al Dancer. He earned his 'Green Card' while performing with DANB and later became a US citizen.  He loves Gainesville and cares deeply for Dance Alive.  As he often says, "Not Dance Alive.  Dance alot!"

He was the first Chinese in America to perform the lead role in George Balanchine's masterpiece, 'Apollo'.  The late Marie-Jeanne, Mr. Balanchine's ballerina muse for 'Apollo' and other ballets, said that Mr. Chu was a great Apollo.  And she was only one of thousands who sing his praises.  He performed the Nutcracker pas de deux as Cavalier for 15 years with Principal Dancer Michele Incollingo - 23 performances in a row one year!  Together they set the standard for The Nutcracker. He was memorable for the elegance and strength and presentation that he brought to the role.  He was one of very few dancers allowed to dance the title role in William Dollar's 'Le Combat', a ballet made famous by American Ballet Theatre.  He has performed the lead roles in all of the great ballets - among them Swan Lake, Giselle and Don Quixote.

He has dignity, humor, intelligence and artistry. He is disciplined, devoted, loyal and a consummate artist and master teacher.  He brings 100% energy to every role he creates onstage, no matter how large or small.

His fellow dancers call him 'The Master'. Mr. Chu is respected and loved by all who know him.  He will be greatly missed.

We love you.

Special Guests from Brazil Share Their Talents

Pictured above from left to right: Carla Amancio with her former teacher choreographer Cristina Helena, dancer/assistant Paula Assis and Cristina's daughter and dancer Estefania Elias de Faria.

Choreographer Christina Helena arrived from Brazil along with her daughter and assistant to set a solo and two pas de deux on dancers Andre Valladon and Carla Amancio. Audiences will remember her work Bailero, an exquisite pas de deux which has been seen on TV, DANB programs at home and on tour and on YouTube.  While here, Ms. Helena taught Company classes as well as advanced classes at Pofahl Studios.

It was a delightful week! DANB looks forward to more exchanges with Ms. Helena and her company.  We anticipate the exchange of dancers and choreography, enriching both companies.

Principal Dancers Reka Gyulai and Rostislav Dzabraev joined DANB's Judy Skinner at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art for Museum Night.  Ms. Gyulai is one of the two dancers that DANB was able to employ thanks to a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 by the National Endowment for the Arts.  Following performances in Delray Beach and Coconut Creek, Ms. Gyulai traveled to Ft. Myers to set 'the fairies' from Sleeping Beauty.

The audience was delighted, expressing their appreciation at a reception following the program in the dancers honor.

Especially good news, we're already booked there for the coming season!
