1. EVENT – Lynn Scarlett coming to UF to speak on Climate Change
This coming January, the Office of Sustainability, Florida Climate Institute, Water Institute, and Graham Center are hosting guest speaker Lynn Scarlett, a leading environmental policy analyst and former Deputy Secretary of the Interior under President George W. Bush, to discuss her thoughts and experience with shifting policies and implementation plans for energy and climate change in the US, as well as her work on Senator Graham's Oil Spill Commission. The keynote speech will be held on January 25, 2011 at 8 pm in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom. Scarlett will also give a seminar on her work in the Everglades on January 25th at 3pm in Reitz 282 and a talk on Green Careers, January 26, 2011 at 10 am in the Reitz Union Rion Ballroom.
2. EVENT – Volunteers needed for Campus Cleanup, Feb. 5, 9am-12pm
The UF Office of Sustainability and the Clean Water Campaign (CWC) are teaming up to host REstore: a campus cleanup aimed at involving all audiences at UF – staff, faculty, students. The event on February 5 will serve as a kickoff to REthink - a semester campaign to engage, educate and empower Gators to consider waste in its many forms and the ways they can REduce, REuse, REcycle, REpurpose, REnew, REstore and REspond in their own lives! To RSVP to serve as a volunteer, contact Ashley Pennington at amp1986@ufl.edu. Volunteers will be provided refreshments and snacks following the cleanup.
3. NEW COURSE - Global Sustainable Energy: Past, Present and Future
Students will explore energy consumption patterns including individuals, countries and the entire globe. These patterns will include all sectors of the global economy from fully developed countries to developing nations. New energy sources will be investigated and international solutions to future needs will be analyzed. Both physical limitations and capabilities of these new sources will be presented and debated. 4. EVENT – Volunteers needed for 12th Annual Air Potato Roundup
The City of Gainesville is seeking volunteers to join in the fun and help protect the City's conservation lands at the 12th Annual Great Air Potato Roundup. The Roundup is on Saturday, January 29, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Pre-registration for this event is required and starts December 1, 2010. Volunteers will be assigned to a site where they will gather air potatoes in the morning from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Following the roundup from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., a celebration festival will be held at Morningside Nature Center located at 3540 East University Avenue, 32641, with food, music, T-Shirts and prizes. 5. CONFERENCE – FCCMA Emerging Leaders 2011 Student Scholarship
The FCCMA Annual Conference Emerging Leaders Scholarship is designed to allow public administration students and entry-level city and county management professionals interested in continuing their academic and professional development as professional public managers to attend the annual conference. The FCCMA conference is a professional development program designed to promote continued education and networking opportunities in the municipal and county management profession.
The scholarship includes complimentary registration to the annual conference (value $400), a reimbursable travel-expense stipend of up to $600, and a one-year complimentary membership to the FCCMA. Scholarship recipients are responsible for their own food and accommodations. See attachment for more information!
6. JOB - Opening at Leon County Office of Sustainability
This position is responsible for planning, implementing, operating and monitoring of the County's energy management program by setting of goals and strategies to save energy, conducting energy audits of the County's buildings, and providing technical assistance to further the goals of the Office of Sustainability. Position outlines energy saving goals; applies analytical and evaluation methods to conduct energy studies and provide equipment and operational recommendations; forecasts future energy costs; and prepares reports on energy consumption and utility charges. Position also monitors green house gas emmissions and establishes energy optimization protocols.

8. JOB -Graduate Research Assistant for the George Mason Sustainability Institute (APPLICATION DEADLINE TOMORROW!)

A Graduate Student Research Assistantship is expected to be available in December 2010 through the Office of Sustainability to assist with the initial set up of the Mason Sustainability Institute. Graduate Assistant will be responsible for helping Sustainability Manager and Sustainability Projects Specialist with program development, infrastructure establishment, partnership building, and community outreach for the first year. An opportunity for December graduates to get their hands dirty with some meaningful organizing focused on moving communities toward zero-waste. The Pick Up America crew started walking from the east coast (literally on the beach) in March and has picked up 73,224 pounds of litter on 735 miles America's roadways on their two-year journey to San Francisco while organizing community/school events about zero-waste along the way.
