A Hey English Dance on Monday, March 21
Come join us for a Hey Dance!!! This Monday night we will be focusing on dances with heys! We've all done Hey's for 4, but we will also be doing a hey for 3, a hey for 6, a circular hey, a mirror hey, a dolphin hey. How can there be so many different types of heys? A hey is passing alternate shoulders so you could do it with any number of people in any shape.
English dances are written for specific tunes and everyone has their favorites usually because of the wonderful dance moves along with the music. All dances are taught, walked through, and called. No partner is necessary. No specific clothing or shoes is needed--just something you can move comfortably in. We have a lesson at 6:45, but if you can't make it then, don't hesitate--you will learn what you need with the teaching and your partner. English dancing is easy on your feet; you move on your own volition--so those who get dizzy or have shoulder issues should be comfortable. Most connections are made with you eyes and you mirror your partner's moves.
We have live music every Monday and this dance is a bargain at only $5!!! But we have an extra basket where we ask for donations, if you can, for the musicians who work so hard. They practice the music each week before the dances.
Dances done last week were:
Trip to the Manors (2 cpl; heys up and down; hey's across)
Grand Mother Circle (5 cpl circle mixer; men face out; women in)
* Country Bumpkin (LW, top couple sashay down and back; go through the arch)
Gotham Julilee (LW 2nd lady followed by 1st man does a figure 8 around the other two)
Squaring the Circle (single file clockwise "Randy's Rondo" tune!)
Beach Spring (4 cpl to the beautiful hymm; devils backbone) (Called by Lisa Marie)
Waterfall Waltz (Sicilian Circle; step-close, step-close past the other couple)
The Potter's Wheel (LW, Dolphin Hey)
An Amherst Cocktail (LW, basic easy figures)
Take a Dance (LW, 1's lead down; cast back; 2 hand turn. 2's lead up, cast back, 2 hand turn)
Lover's Knot (Lw, double mad robbin shuttle)
* Dance requested to be done next week.
Remember, we need to keep moving for health!! We hope to see you there. Where?

Gainesville English Country Dance
After everyone viewed the Pride and Prejudice dance clip last week, we were inspired to dance Mr. Beveridge's Maggot again. This week we plan to do Trip to the Manors, a two-couple dance by Gary Roodman. See the dance at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIiZWs2k-qQ.
Randy has three other new dances planned as well as some familiar ones, including the ones starred last week. And Lisa Marie will call Beach Spring.
Have you ever made a mistake during a dance; or the person next to you has? What do you do? Don't spend time thinking about what went wrong--during that time another move is happening which you are probably not paying attention to; likewise if you spend time trying to explain something to someone else--now they are missing the current move as well and mistakes compound. So after a mistake just leave it behind and go forward. Everyone makes mistakes. Just pay more attention next time around to what everyone is doing. Listen to the caller. Let the caller do the explaining.
Each week we try new as well as old dances. English dancing is interesting in that there is a specific tune for each dance. Some dances were written in the 1600's and they are still being written today. We do a wide variety each week. The composers are just as wide ranging--from the current day prolific Jonathan Jensen to Bethovan and Mozart. In the near future we will have a dance where people will be invited to wear their finery--regency, renaissance, etc.
Do you want to go to a ball but not have the expense of a weekend or go too far? The Mayfair Ball is coming up in May (details below). It is a one day event 2 hours away from Gainesville. On Monday evenings, we will be doing the dance, Mayfair, periodically to prepare for it.
Please join us for English Country Dancing at 308 W. University Avenue (upstairs) this and every Monday evening. Some have expressed concern that they can't make the 6:50 lesson but would like to try it. Come anyway. Every dance is taught, walked through, and called. You will be paired with an experienced partner who will gladly dance with you and you will find it easy to shadow what they are doing with the calling. You don't need a partner (there is no ballroom hold), wear comfortable shoes that you can move well in, and come to have fun.
We have live musicians and a wide variety of music including waltzes, jigs, and reels. Our regular musicians have been playing for us each week without compensation. Since we have been keeping the price of our dance at $5 per person, we will have a basket to collect separate donations to distribute to the musicians, if you would like to contribute. They are putting more and more personal time into practicing the tunes.
If you enjoy snacking, please bring a snack to share.
Dances done last week were:
Mayfair (2 couple USA dance)
Lilliburlero (LW, cross with your partner, turn your back on your neighbor change places backing up)
Castigated Neighbor (LW 2's gate ones; 1's gate twos)
Thursday Mixer (LW, a double progression mixer)
