Article: What is the Job of the Administration
Have you ever heard someone say, "If I do my job right, you will not know I exist."
Norm Sloan coached the Gators to their first SEC championship, winning 15 straight SEC basketball games.
The star of the team and most unique player in Gator basketball history was Dwayne Schintzius. The second best player on the team was power forward Livingston Chapman. Four of the five starters from the Gators championship team returned including seniors Schintzius and Chapman.
Norm Sloan got fired and Dan DeVoe came in the next year as an interim coach. Dan DeVoe was a disciplinarian who soon ran off Schintzius and Chapman.
The Gators went from having the best year in school history to one of the worst.
The best administrations are ones you never hear about. They service the public by quietly keeping the machinery running.
Too often, administrators put their rules above their purpose. They destroy instead of nurture.
At that time, I was playing on a men's basketball team in Tampa. The coach of our team was a friend of mine and a lawyer, Jack Levine. I asked Jack, "What does it take to be a good coach?".
Jack said, "Get the best players and make sure they show up for the game."

Dancing During the Last Week of the Year
Thursday, December 15, 2011
Bolero Friday, Saturday night Contra and Tango, Sunday Waltz Brunch and Swing
You can get in three good days of dancing this weekend.
Kay Picart teaches Bolero tonight Friday at 6:30 at 308 West.
UF Tango and UF Swing are on break for the rest of this year.
Saturday night are two dances: Contra at the Boltin Center and Tango Pavadita at 308 West. If you are looking for something to do on
New Year's Eve, you will have the same two great choices.
The monthly Vintage Waltz Brunch is this Sunday.
Sunday night starting at 6 pm we have Swing until 8:30 and then an hour of Hustle! This is a combination of lesson and dancing, so
you can learn something and get in a good amount of Swing dancing. This month we are learning West Coast Swing so you can
participate at Josh's Wednesday and Saturday night dances. We had a nice group last week. You can drop in. You do not need a
partner. If having a good gender balance is important to you, you should bring someone of the opposite gender.

Israeli and English tonight, International Friday, Contra Saturday, Swing 101-B Sunday
Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,
Lots of good folk dancing this week.
We are having Israeli folk dancing tonight and Monday December 19. Check back for the rest of this year.
English country dancing is tonight and every Monday for December.
International Folk Dancing is this Friday 12/16. This is their last Friday this month. Believe they are having a New Year's Eve gathering, so check with them on that.
This Saturday night is the monthly Contra dance and this Sunday is the monthly Waltz Brunch.
Sunday nights Lindy Swing Dancing 101 is from 6 to 7 followed from 7 to 9:30 with Swing and Hustle! These are small classes where you get personal attention. Once in a while, we hold a Swing dance with a mix of music for all types of Swing, so keep your eyes open for these announcements.
Details and contact info for these and other programs below.
Happy Dancing,
Andy

Public Arts, City of Orlando
The City of Orlando Public Arts curates three galleries. They are free to the general public. Each gallery has ongoing show, which usually run three months. Two of the City of Orlando's main galleries are in downtown City Hall. The Terrace Gallery has been opened since City Hall was dedicated in 1992. The Terrace Gallery was originally designed to be a lecture room but it was quickly noticed the space would be better utilized as an exhibition space for local, national, and international artist in efforts to reflect the cities dedication to local artists as well as providing a space where outside artists can share their vision with our community. The Mayor's 2nd and 3rd Floor Gallery is a beautiful circular gallery space on the 3rd floor of City Hall, which overlooks the 2nd floor landing and extends down two long hallways. This gallery space is dedicated to only local Orlando artists. The gallery at Harry P. Leu Gardens is located within the historic Harry P. Leu Gardens Garden House, where a visitor may peruse the halls of this historic landmark and find revolving exhibitions displaying fine art of botanical themes as well as permanent works owned by the city.

Wells' Built Museum of African American History
Dr. William M. Wells was a prominent African-American physician in Orlando during the first half of the 20th century. He created the South Street Casino to host touring black bands and, since Orlando was rigorously segregated, he opened the Wells'Built Hotel next door to house the musicians. Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, Ivory Joe Hunter, and many other musical greats played the Casino and stayed at the hotel over the years. White Orlando didn't know what it was missing.
The Casino is gone now, but the hotel remains. It has been converted into a modest museum housing memorabilia of Orlando's African-American community along with some African art on loan from local collectors.
Dr. Well's home has been moved to the site of the Casino and will be restored and opened to the public.
