Nominations for the 2013 Champions for Change Awards are open now through March 1. A combination of the Office of Sustainability's Sustainable Solutions Awards and the Healthy Gators Awards, Champions for Change recognizes faculty, staff and students within the UF community who have made significant achievements in the areas of sustainability and health. The awards seek to highlight such achievements in hopes of inspiring others to join the movement of creating a healthier and more sustainable community. Please consider nominating someone in your, or any other, department, to be recognized for their efforts. Self-nominations are also accepted. A full list of nomination categories, and the nomination form, is available at the website.

1. Water, Wetlands and Watersheds Seminar Series, Wednesday, February 27, 11:45AM-12:35PM
Brown bag lunch seminar presented by the Center for Wetlands, free and open to the public. The seminars this semester will focus on coastal systems and climate issues. This week's seminar is: Understanding patterns of past, present, and future sea level change, presented by: Andrea Dutton, Assistant Professor, Department of Geological Sciences, UF. The seminar will take place in Phelps Lab 101.
2. Is it Possible to Live Waste Free? Presentation, Wednesday, February 27, 3-4PM
Join the Office of Sustainability and learn how Grant Baldwin and Jen Rustemeyer of The Clean Bin Project attempted to live waste-free for a year and find out what they learned. Glean tips from them on how to be a more conscious consumer, how sorting recycling and easy ways to compost can reduce your overall landfill waste, and how they learned to make daily use-products at home. Join them at this limited-seating event on February 27, from 3-4PM in Reitz Union room 284 before their film is shown later that night.
3. Film Screening: The Clean Bin Project, Wednesday, February 27, 7-9PM
The Office of Sustainability and Florida Museum of Natural History partner to present The Clean Bin Project. This award-winning film examines the effects of a "throw-away society" and illustrates the impact of waste on our environment. Don't miss out on this free screening. It will take place at the Florida Museum of Natural History at 7:00 p.m.
4. Growing Tomatoes, Thursday, February 28, 6:30-7:30PM
This free class is designed to provide information to individuals interested in growing tomatoes in North Central Florida. Pre-register by February 26 by leaving a voicemail at 352-337-6209, or for more information call 352-955-2402. This event will take place at the Alachua County Extension Office, 2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville.
5. Florida Archaeology Month Presentation, Sunday, March 3, 2-3PM
March is Florida Archaeology Month! Join the Museum for a celebration of Florida Archaeology with a presentation by Neill Wallis, Ph.D., Assistant Curator of Archaeology. The topic will be: The Archaeology of Travelers, Feasts and Coalescent Communities: Recent Research in North Florida. The presentation will be held at the Florida Museum of Natural History, 3215 Hull Road.

6. Call for Applications for UF Graduate Fellows in Sustainability Prairie Project, Due Friday, March 15
As part of a broader, university-wide awakening to environmental and sustainability concerns, the University of Florida Graduate Fellows in Sustainability Prairie Project focuses on graduate student professional development to address these urgent, yet long term, societal issues. The Prairie Project for Graduate Fellows will draw together approximately 30 UF graduate students from diverse fields across the university to learn about environmental issues and sustainability in a workshop May 9-10, 2013. This seminar presented by the Center for Wetlands is free and open to the public. The seminars this semester will focus on coastal systems and climate issues. This week's seminar is: Between the river & the deep blue Gulf: The past & future of oysters in the Big Bend, presented by: Jennifer Seavey, Asst. Director, Seahorse Key Marine Lab, University of Florida, UF. The seminar will take place in Phelps Lab 101.
2. Vegan Days with Chef Johnny Ho, Wednesday, February 6
Eat delicious, fresh vegan food and watch live vegan cooking demonstrations with Chef Johnny every Wednesday! Starting this Wednesday from 10:30AM-6PM, Chef Johnny Ho will perform vegan-cooking demonstrations in the residential dining halls. Locations will alternate between The Fresh Food Company and Gator Corner Dining Center, starting with February 6th at The Fresh Food Company.
3. Raised Bed Vegetable Gardening, Monday, February 11, 6:30-7:30PM
Growing your own vegetables is rewarding and fun. Learn what crops to grow in your spring garden and about the efficient technique of growing your vegetables in raised beds. This event will be repeated on Wednesday, February 13. Both events will take place at the Alachua County Cooperative Extension Office, 2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville. There is no cost for this class, pre-register at least 3 days prior to class by calling 352-337-6209. Monday's event will be from 6:30-7:30PM and Wednesday's event will be from 3-4PM.
4. Alachua County Local Food Week, February 9-17
Starting February 9, 2013 Alachua County is celebrating Local Food Week. This event builds off the Office of Sustainability's Food for Thought campaign last year. Local food is not just about eating healthy; it represents an opportunity for new entrepreneurship and social empowerment. To learn more, come out for the films, potlucks, and workshops February 9-17! Visit the website for a full list of events.
5. Cinema Verde Environmental Film Festival, February 9-14
The 2013 Cinema Verde Environmental Film and Arts Festival will present a series of films, activities and events focused on the environment. This film festival seeks to raise consciousness about environmental issues, educate people and mobilize support for solving environmental and social problems. The festival will take place at Jolie, 6 West University Ave. For more information and ticket pricing, visit the Cinema Verde website.
6. USGBC Green Caffeine, Wednesday, February 6, 8-9AM
Sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) local chapter, Green Caffeine occurs on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month and is a great way to network, discuss sustainability, share your projects and make connections! This week will feature Jacob Cravey who will discuss his efforts with Community Weatherization Coalition. Green Caffeine will take place at Volta Coffee, Tea and Chocolate, 48 SW 2nd St.
7. 8th Ave. Bike & Coffee House Ride and Dine, Thursday, February 8, 6:30PM
Every Thursday Ryan of The 8th Ave Bike & Coffee House will be leading a Ride and Dine. This social ride is open to anyone with a bike and an interest in having some dinner. All ride levels welcome as this will be an easy paced ride from the shop to the restaurant of choice then back. Front and rear lights will be necessary since this is a night ride and helmets are also highly encouraged! The ride will be leaving The 8th Avenue Bike and Coffee house at 6:30PM.

8. Day of Difference, Registration Closes Tuesday, February 5
Day of Difference is an event where pairs of volunteers go to low-income elementary classrooms and teach kindergarten, first, and second graders about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and success skills. Interested students do not need to have experience in this area. A comprehensive training session will be provided by the Junior Achievement Professionals on February 12 and 13. Day of Difference will be on February 22 and registration is open until February 5. If you are interested and would like more information, please email them. 9. Volunteer Organization Fair, Thursday, February 7, 10AM-1PM
Are you interested in volunteering with a local non-profit or student organization? Then come out to the Volunteer Organization Fair at the Reitz Union Colonnade on Thursday, February 7 from 10AM-1PM. There will be many great organizations that serve all different types of needs in the local Gainesville community. With more than 50 community service organizations and non-profits in attendance annually, the Center for Leadership and Service brings students and community organizations together to provide a place for students to find information about social issues and service opportunities they are passionate about.
10. Public Interest Environmental Conference, February 21-23
The 19th annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference at the University of Florida Levin College of Law will focus on the evolution of endangered species protection over the past four decades. The conference will feature panels on a variety of topics discussing cross-cutting themes in endangered species protection, including - whether the Endangered Species Act is accomplishing its purposes, new and continuing challenges to endangered species protection, and innovative approaches to implementation of the Act. The conference will take place at the University of Florida Levin College of Law on February 21-23. Registration is free.
11. 4th Annual Florida Student Sustainability Summit, Sunday, February 24
The 4th Annual Florida Student Sustainability Summit on February 24 will feature presentations from students, faculty and industry professionals on topics ranging from green entrepreneurship, sustainability in the job market, campus engagement and student organizations. 12. Call For Poster Abstracts, Due Monday, March 4
The Sustaining Economies and Natural Resources in a Changing World:
Key Role of Land Grant Universities conference is accepting poster abstract submissions until Monday, March 4. All individuals working in sustainability issues pertaining to the economy or natural resources are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract for a poster presentation. This includes contributions from anyone conducting research or education programs on agricultural production, infrastructure, corporate services, or natural resources. The conference will take place on April 2-3 in the Reitz Union. For more information, please visit their website.
