Sustainable UF Events & Opportunities for February and early March

Now through April, the Gator nation and local community are invited to participate in the Office of Sustainability's spring campaign, Under One Umbrella! There will be a variety of events and programs related to five key elements of sustainability– food, water, service, waste, and energy. Upcoming Events

1. Water, Wetlands and Watersheds, Wednesday, February 6, 11:45AM-12:35PM

This seminar presented by the Center for Wetlands is free and open to the public. The seminars this semester will focus on coastal systems and climate issues. This week's seminar is: Between the river & the deep blue Gulf: The past & future of oysters in the Big Bend, presented by: Jennifer Seavey, Asst. Director, Seahorse Key Marine Lab, University of Florida, UF. The seminar will take place in Phelps Lab 101.

 

2. Vegan Days with Chef Johnny Ho, Wednesday, February 6

Eat delicious, fresh vegan food and watch live vegan cooking demonstrations with Chef Johnny every Wednesday! Starting this Wednesday from 10:30AM-6PM, Chef Johnny Ho will perform vegan-cooking demonstrations in the residential dining halls. Locations will alternate between The Fresh Food Company and Gator Corner Dining Center, starting with February 6th at The Fresh Food Company.

 

3. Raised Bed Vegetable Gardening, Monday, February 11, 6:30-7:30PM

Growing your own vegetables is rewarding and fun. Learn what crops to grow in your spring garden and about the efficient technique of growing your vegetables in raised beds. This event will be repeated on Wednesday, February 13. Both events will take place at the Alachua County Cooperative Extension Office, 2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville. There is no cost for this class, pre-register at least 3 days prior to class by calling 352-337-6209. Monday's event will be from 6:30-7:30PM and Wednesday's event will be from 3-4PM.

 

4. Alachua County Local Food Week, February 9-17

Starting February 9, 2013 Alachua County is celebrating Local Food Week.  This event builds off the Office of Sustainability's Food for Thought campaign last year. Local food is not just about eating healthy; it represents an opportunity for new entrepreneurship and social empowerment.  To learn more, come out for the films, potlucks, and workshops February 9-17! 5. Cinema Verde Environmental Film Festival, February 9-14

The 2013 Cinema Verde Environmental Film and Arts Festival will present a series of films, activities and events focused on the environment. This film festival seeks to raise consciousness about environmental issues, educate people and mobilize support for solving environmental and social problems. 6. USGBC Green Caffeine, Wednesday, February 6, 8-9AM

Sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) local chapter, Green Caffeine occurs on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month and is a great way to network, discuss sustainability, share your projects and make connections! This week will feature Jacob Cravey who will discuss his efforts with Community Weatherization Coalition. Green Caffeine will take place at Volta Coffee, Tea and Chocolate, 48 SW 2nd St.

 

7. 8th Ave. Bike & Coffee House Ride and Dine, Thursday, February 8, 6:30PM

Every Thursday Ryan of The 8th Ave Bike & Coffee House will be leading a Ride and Dine. This social ride is open to anyone with a bike and an interest in having some dinner.  All ride levels welcome as this will be an easy paced ride from the shop to the restaurant of choice then back.  Front and rear lights will be necessary since this is a night ride and helmets are also highly encouraged! The ride will be leaving The 8th Avenue Bike and Coffee house at 6:30PM.

8. Day of Difference, Registration Closes Tuesday, February 5

Day of Difference is an event where pairs of volunteers go to low-income elementary classrooms and teach kindergarten, first, and second graders about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and success skills. Interested students do not need to have experience in this area. A comprehensive training session will be provided by the Junior Achievement Professionals on February 12 and 13. Day of Difference will be on February 22 and registration is open until February 5. If you are interested and would like more information, please email them. 9. Volunteer Organization Fair, Thursday, February 7, 10AM-1PM

Are you interested in volunteering with a local non-profit or student organization? Then come out to the Volunteer Organization Fair at the Reitz Union Colonnade on Thursday, February 7 from 10AM-1PM. There will be many great organizations that serve all different types of needs in the local Gainesville community.  With more than 50 community service organizations and non-profits in attendance annually, the Center for Leadership and Service brings students and community organizations together to provide a place for students to find information about social issues and service opportunities they are passionate about.

 

10. Public Interest Environmental Conference, February 21-23

The 19th annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference at the University of Florida Levin College of Law will focus on the evolution of endangered species protection over the past four decades. The conference will feature panels on a variety of topics discussing cross-cutting themes in endangered species protection, including - whether the Endangered Species Act is accomplishing its purposes, new and continuing challenges to endangered species protection, and innovative approaches to implementation of the Act. The conference will take place at the University of Florida Levin College of Law on February 21-23. Registration is free.

 

11. 4th Annual Florida Student Sustainability Summit, Sunday, February 24

The 4th Annual Florida Student Sustainability Summit on February 24 will feature presentations from students, faculty and industry professionals on topics ranging from green entrepreneurship, sustainability in the job market, campus engagement and student organizations. 12. Call For Poster Abstracts, Due Monday, March 4

The Sustaining Economies and Natural Resources in a Changing World:

Key Role of Land Grant Universities conference is accepting poster abstract submissions until Monday, March 4. All individuals working in sustainability issues pertaining to the economy or natural resources are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract for a poster presentation. This includes contributions from anyone conducting research or education programs on agricultural production, infrastructure, corporate services, or natural resources. The conference will take place on April 2-3 in the Reitz Union. For more information, please visit their website.
