090528 Eight super simple steps for an infinite variety of West Coast Swing

Hello Gainesville Area Dancers and Friends,

This is the last week of the Super Simple West Coast Swing series
and we have a very special super simple class this week.

Come to class or just to dance.

Everyone is invited.

Class starts exactly on time at 6:30 at GDMA.
This week we will cover:

1. The fundamental footwork for the man that
you can use for all basic patterns in West Coast Swing.
This is super simple and essential to know.

2. The fundamental footwork for the woman that you can
use to follow all the man's signals for the basic patterns.
This is also super simple and essential to know.

Learn eight super simple steps and do an infinite variety of
West Coast Swing combinations.

How is that possible?

See the pattern that underlies the patterns and
feel all your steps fall into place.

Anyone can attend this special class this Sunday.

You do not need any experience, you do not need a partner and you
do not need to have attended any of our prior classes.

Do not be late. Class starts with essential information at exactly 6:30.
If you are five minutes late, you are going to be behind.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Hello Gainesville Area Dancers and Friends,

See the article for what we learned this week in class and
what you can practice at home.

a class or two at a minimum. No partner needed. Sunday at 6:30 at GDMA.

If you have dance experience, you can join us for the intermediate
West Coast Swing at 7:30. Hustle is at 8:30.

Article: Review Class 3 for Super Simple West Coast Swing

Remember this is a first timer's class. Have fun and enjoy
the process. Do not worry about what you are doing or how
fast you are learning. Relax, have a good time and try not
to think too much.

Here is what we learned in class 3 (I hope).

1. How to move forward and back, moving our body before
our feet, so we can stay connected, communicate and
move smoothly with our partner.

2. The right side pass with an under arm turn.
The man signals the woman to turn by signaling
horizontal motion perpendicular to the slot.
(Raising the arm is not the signal to turn.)
The woman turns herself.

3. The sugar push.
The man collapses his frame and allows the woman
to come close.

Things to remember from the first two classes

1. Safety, Courtesy and Comfort.

2. Partnership - the man invites and the woman completes.

3. Balance - everyone maintains their own balance.
Everyone does their own dancing.

4. Connection - the woman maintains the connection.

5. Direction - the woman keeps going until stopped.
The two directions are straight and turn.
The woman stops at the end of the connection
or when she is blocked.

6. Keep time with the music.
The basic counting is 1 2 3-and-4 5-and-6.

7. The basic patterns finish on 4, so you can do
5-and-6 in place.

Homework assignment: listen to music, count to 8, find the 1.
Train your body to do one two three-and-four five-and-six to music.

Article: Review Class 1 for Super Simple West Coast Swing

Here is what we learned in class 1 (I hope).

1. Counting to music.
The music was in phrases of eight beats.
We counted numbers 1 to 8 for each beat.

2. We stepped in single time to the music,
stepping once on each beat.

3. We learned how to take a triple-step,
which is 3 steps on 2 beats of music.
We did two of these in a row, which we counted
three-and-four five-and-six

4. We added two single steps in the beginning to
get a basic 6-count West Coast Swing rhythm,
which we counted:
one two three-and-four five-and-six

5. We learned to make a connection with our partner
and to communicate by shifting our balance.
We learned that everyone maintains their own balance
and everyone does their own dancing. We learned to
communicate through our center without pushing and
pulling on our partner.

6. We learned how to step by keeping our weight
on our supporting leg.

7. We learned how to move forward and backward on
a line with our partner in time to music using
our 6-count rhythm.

8. We learned to finish our movement on count 4,
so we could do five-and-six in place.

9. We learned that all swing dances have the basic rhythm
one two three-and-four
any number of optional step step
anchor-in-place with a triple step at the end

10. We learned the dance Bala, which is a cha cha and
is similar to swing in the mix of step step and
triple-steps.

Homework assignment: train your body to do
one two three-and-four five-and-six

Hello Gainesville Area Dancers and Friends,

Welcome and thank you to all of you that came to yesterday's
week 1 of our Super Simple West Coast Swing beginner series.

Congratulations on what I hope was a fun and informative class.

If there was anything you did not get, do not worry, you will.
Everyone that shows up learns to dance, everyone.

If you missed the first week of this series, you can still join
us for any of the other weeks.

Next Sunday, after our class, Marrie Robinson is giving a class
in Movement Pattern and Free Style Dancing. This will be a
great class to help you move your body to music.

If you signed up for the month, you can take the Movement Pattern
class for $3.

If you are paying by the day, $10 general ($5 students) the Movement
Pattern class is included at no extra charge.

You can take just the Movement Pattern class for $7.

Tuesday night, only eight blocks away, is Mostly Swing dancing
with Richard Nalli. Get in a second night of dancing and practice
what you learned. They cover the same material in a different way.

Article: Review Class 1 for Super Simple West Coast Swing

Here is what we learned in class 1 (I hope).

1. Counting to music.
The music was in phrases of eight beats.
We counted numbers 1 to 8 for each beat.

2. We stepped in single time to the music,
stepping once on each beat.

3. We learned how to take a triple-step,
which is 3 steps on 2 beats of music.
We did two of these in a row, which we counted
three-and-four five-and-six

4. We added two single steps in the beginning to
get a basic 6-count West Coast Swing rhythm,
which we counted:
one two three-and-four five-and-six

5. We learned to make a connection with our partner
and to communicate by shifting our balance.
We learned that everyone maintains their own balance
and everyone does their own dancing. We learned to
communicate through our center without pushing and
pulling on our partner.

6. We learned how to step by keeping our weight
on our supporting leg.

7. We learned how to move forward and backward on
a line with our partner in time to music using
our 6-count rhythm.

8. We learned to finish our movement on count 4,
so we could do five-and-six in place.

9. We learned that all swing dances have the basic rhythm
one two three-and-four
any number of optional step step
anchor-in-place with a triple step at the end

10. We learned the dance Bala, which is a cha cha and
is similar to swing in the mix of step step and
triple-steps.

Homework assignment: train your body to do
one two three-and-four five-and-six

Hello Gainesville Area Dancers and Friends,

This Sunday May 10 starts the Super Simple West Coast Swing 4 week
beginner series.

The last time this class was done was in 2007.
Make sure you come to this class.

This is a great chance for you or anyone you know to get started

anytime during the year and be able to keep up.

This is a special class, where you will be able to learn nice, slow
and easy with other people at the same level as you.

There will also be course materials you can use to practice with
at home. After each class, I will send you what we learned.

West Coast Swing is both among the easiest and most sophisticated
of dances, which you can do to a huge variety of great music.

The class is from 6:30 to 7:30 on Sundays May 10, 17, 24 and 31.
Come to this class even if you miss some Sundays.

You can stay afterwards for the Intermediate West Coast Swing class
