Swing Parties, Contra Dance

Hello Gainesville Ocala Area Dancers and Friends,

Three special dances to be aware of:

1. Saturday night at the Boltin Center, Swing and Social Dance with Richard Nalli.

2. Sunday afternoon Contra Dance also at the Boltin Center.

3. Wednesday evening West Coast Swing Dance at the Eagles Club with Josh and Bri.

Came into some money last week (crinkled in a pants pocket from the wash), so I am planning to splurge and be at all of them, if that makes a difference to anyone one way or the other.

UF Swing Club is on break.

Only 6 hours from here is a spectacular event in Miami this weekend, with Hustle, Salsa and West Coast Swing. The Hustle World Championships and the qualifier for the Salsa World Championships are held over the weekend. The dancing is astonishing, whether on the floor or the air acrobatics. Their Saturday night show is world class. If you can make any night for the competitions or performance, it is worth it. The daytime classes are with the evening's performers, so you get instruction from the best. www.hustleandsalsa.com

At the end of May in nearby St. Petersburg is a wonderful event Swing Dance USA, after a two-year hiatus, with daytime classes and night time dances. This is the magic of the Swing era, no East and no West Coast Swing, pure Lindy hop, Bal-Swing, Jitterburg, Jazz, Blues. The price is inexpensive and contact Richard Nalli for a 10% discount. www.SwingDanceUSA.com

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Article: Not Indian Support Again (or Sometimes We Are Wrong When We Think We Are Right)

The SD cards from my camera were not working in my new computer so I called Dell.

The technician from India got on my computer remotely, checked some things and said the card reader was working fine and the problem must be with my cards.

I knew he was wrong. The cards worked in the computer an hour earlier. They worked in my camera. They worked in other people's computers. The cards only stopped working when I downloaded a Microsoft update. I insisted the problem had to be with the software update.

The Indian guy was very nice. He was solicitous and kept checking things, but he was not too bright. He kept getting back to the point that there must be something wrong with the cards, because he could find nothing wrong with the card reader.

Well you know how Indian support is. So we went back and forth, me explaining the undeniable logic of my reasoning and he with his poor problem solving skills.

I was patient.

While he continued to check again and again, I felt something on the bottom of my card. I turned the card over and there was something loose hanging over one of the connectors. These were special ultra cards and I guess they had something unusual that was not exactly compatible with the new computer. The other card had the same thing. I twisted off these little pieces, put the cards back in the card reader and they worked.

Ah, ha! I am a genius and solved the problem, but I did not want to brag, so I did not tell the Indian guy what I found out.

I just told him he did a good job and he did not have to bother any more. I would do as he said and check the cards out further.

His manager got on the phone and asked me how his man did.

"Excellent," I said.

Sometimes we are just not as smart as we thing we are.

Take Action: Oppose Oil Drilling in Florida's Waters

Oppose Oil and Gas Drilling in Florida's Waters; Renewables, Not Drilling, Should Be Florida's Future

Go here to oppose the drilling
https://secure3.convio.net/nasaud/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=815

As expected, House Speaker-elect Dean Cannon's committee released its bill today to overturn Florida's long-standing prohibition against nearshore oil and gas drilling. The House Select Policy Council on Strategic and Economic Planning will discuss and likely vote on the bill in its scheduled meeting TOMORROW.

Please take a moment to email or call the members of this Council, telling them to protect Florida's beaches: renewable energy, not nearshore drilling, is the kind of leadership Florida needs!

Despite extensive discussion in the House, this proposal has failed to gain traction to-date in the Senate; a bill filed by incoming Senate President Mike Haridopolos (R-Melbourne) was referred to several committees but has not been heard in any.

Cannon's bill is modeled on last year's HB 1219 which emerged late in session, passing the House but failing to be taken up by the Senate.

Some of the provisions in this year's legislation include:
Requiring the Board of Trustees to open lease sales twice a year, with bid submission fees of $1M and fixed royalty amounts of at least 1/8, and a $500M surety bond for drilling.
Allowing directional drilling to occur just outside of aquatic preserves, wildlife refuges and sanctuaries to extract resources underneath preserves, refuges and other sensitive areas.
Requiring that all drilling infrastructure within three miles of the coast be subsurface; requiring that above surface exploration structures between 3 and 6 miles be temporary only (less than 6 months).
Preempting local governments from protecting their local beaches by restricting drilling within their waters.
Requiring the Secretary of Defense to object to each individual lease block sale in order to provide consideration for the military mission.
For more on the bill, read the staff summary and the bill text.

Please take a moment to share your concerns with this committee! Florida deserves clean energy and the jobs that come with it today.

Article: Art, hat and dancing

My mother and I went to the Gainesville downtown art fair last weekend. She is the only one willing to be seen with me in my hat. Her and my nephew, who I have convinced that I am the coolest guy in the world because of the hat.

Ran into Jackie with her son. Their hats were pretty bad.

Ran into a woman who I have dinner with most Shabbats. There are only about 8 of us at synagogue sitting around a table, so it is not like she does not know me, but she did not recognize me in my hat and glasses. I had to take them off before she figured out who I was.

The art was impressive.

My mother commented, "it is amazing there can be so much art work without it being repetitive."

For the most part, each person's work was unique, and it should be. Each person is unique.

That is the point of art, whether painting, pottery or dancing, isn't it?

Art is expressing what is inside outside.

Article: Who is Wise

I was talking to one of my customers the other day. I was busy and she likes to talk, but I did not cut her off. You often think you know what the other person is going to say, but if you let them go on, you can be surprised.

In response to a comment she made about religion, I said, "You have to have faith."

She said, "No, not faith. What is important is to have experience."

She said, "Who is wise?". I shrugged over the phone. She said, "One who learns from all people."

Ben (the son of) Zoma said:

Who is wise?

He who learns from all people, as it is said: 'From all those who taught me I gained understanding' (Psalms 119:99).

Who is strong?

He who conquers his evil inclination, as it is said: 'Better is one slow to anger than a strong man, and one who rules over his spirit than a conqueror of a city' (Proverbs 16:32).

Who is rich?

He who is satisfied with his lot, as it is said: 'When you eat the toil of your hands you are fortunate and it is good for you' (Psalms 128:2). 'You are fortunate' -- in this world; 'and it is good for you' -- in the World to Come.

Who is honored?

He who honors others, as it is said: 'For those who honor Me will I honor, and those who scorn Me will be degraded' (I Samuel 2:30)."

Ran into a woman who I have dinner with most Saturday afternoons.

Israeli, International Thursday, English, Clogging

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

There is no Israeli Dancing this Thursday. Israeli dancing returns next week.

This Thursday, tonight, is an interesting and fun event at the Harn museum with the International Folk dancers performing and leading audience participation.

English Country dancing continues this Thursday night.

Expand your folk dance repetoire with good old American folk dancing. This Sunday is a clogging social and I believe newcomers are most welcome.

Next Thursday the incomparable Yair Dalal will be in concert at 7 pm in the Atrium of Ustler Hall at UF, with extraordinary hauntingly, magical music from the oud. www.YairDalal.com

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Quotes:

- To quote a dictum of Simon, what a horse does under compulsion he does blindly, and his performance is no more beautiful than would be that of a ballet-dancer taught by whip and goad. The performances of horse or man so treated would seem to be displays of clumsy gestures rather than of grace and beauty. What we need is that the horse should of his own accord exhibit his finest airs and paces at set signals. ~ Xenophon

Article: My Mother's Date

Took my nephew to the Itchetucknee today. Called him last night to charge the water proof camera. When I picked him up, I asked him where the camera was. His sister took it to the beach. She does not even go in the water. Makes you shake your head.

My mother will be 78 this month. Last year she was over a friend's house and the guy jumped her. She was not interested and fended him off. Once a natural beauty, always a natural beauty.

My sister has been looking for someone for my mother for a while and set my mother up with one of my sister's patients.

The guy took her out one night and last Friday had her over for dinner with his daughter. I met him. He was a nice guy.

Tonight he called her and asked her to a movie.

In a phone call that lasted less than ten seconds, my mother said, "Look Bill," in tone that would chill a hot day in Florida,  "I am not interested in dating," and bam hung up the phone.

It is not the rudest thing I have seen a woman do, but I told her it was.

She could not have cared less and did not give the poor guy one second thought.

If you thought it was going to get easier when you got older, it is not.

Swing Party, Tango, Ballroom Party, Clogging Party, Mom's Date

Hello Gainesville Ocala Area Dancers and Friends,

Lots of parties this week. They do not happen that often so take advantage.

This week's newsletter is out early to remind you of the monthly West Coast Swing dance at the Eagles Club Wednesday night (tonight). This is only the second one. If you want them to continue, show your support and get out there.

UF Swing Club is at the UTC Friday. Next Thursday April 15 is the UF Swing Club Formal at the Reitz Union. They only do this once a year.

Thursday West Coast Swing with Judi, Tuesday East Coast Swing with Richard and next Wednesday West Coast with Josh.

Do not know yet where Tango Y Te will be this week, but Tango Encanto has their dance this Friday night. They only do this twice a month.

This Saturday night is a ballroom dance at Maria Alvarez. This is a once-a-month happenning.

This Sunday is a Clogging Social. I cannot remember the last one, so it is pretty infrequent. I do not think you have to be a clogger to check this out. Try something new. It will be good for you.

April 15-18 there is a Tango festival in Atlanta. www.atlantatangofestival.com

See the schedule for other dancing.

Happy Dancing,
Andy
