We are doing an event: VIVA EUROPE is a free festival and celebration of the food, dance, music, languages, and culture of Europe. We will have a full day of music and dance performances, food vendors, displays, contests, kid's activities, etc at the Bo Diddley Plaza from 11-4 on Saturday April 7.

We are hoping to have several local dance groups share their enthusiasm for European folk dancing by performing at VIVA EUROPE.

Could you forward this mail to any groups who you think might be interested?

Article: Sacred Grooving

Last night I joined the Sacred Groove meditative dance.

The room was transformed into a cozy, mystical setting, with low lights, draped materials and mysterious nicknacks.

Most everyone was dressed in folksy, loose fitting clothing. I felt out of place in a polo shirt and dockers, like I was the corporate guy in a dark suit at a hippy convention. I took my shoes off to get with the program.

The room was full. We sat on the floor in a large oval, knee to knee, "closing the gaps," according to Suzmiche, our leader.

Suzmiche said, "This is a chance for you to be in a non-judgmental place." I am not sure what else she said, except she kept mentioning "non-judgmental". When she was done, she asked if there were any questions.

I wanted to ask, "Yeah, what do we do?", but I did not say anything.

The music started, which felt like Hindo Rhythm and Blues, if there could be such a thing. Everyone got up and started dancing.

Being someone who practices with a video camera, if I was going to get my Sacred Groove on, I had to shut my eyes. There was no way I could watch these people dance without judging them and without judging myself in the mirror.

Until Suzmiche invited me, I had no intention of going. Have to say, it is fun to have a unique, unexpected challenge, especially when you do not expect it. Sounds like something Yogi would say.

For an hour and a half, we bounced around. I peeked a few times. The music changed like the scenery in a cross country drive and so how we moved. There was dancing, sitting, rolling and laying, with and without partners that came and went, not me though. I was strictly celibate.

When the music reached a pitch, and the room was pulsing, I wondered if people were going to start throwing their clothes off. Later I was told, no alcohol and no drugs permitted, which explained the temperance, though it could have gone either way.

Towards the end, people ended up on the floor with a slow ohm hum and a few isolated dancers. I laid on back, my eyes were open by then, and I was not judging a thing, only appreciating the patterns on the ceiling and admiring a woman's hands dancing in a corner of my vision. I was Sacred Grooving.

The next one is April 29.

Article: Comment on It Takes Devotion to Train a New Dancer

My wife and I took lessons from Maria Alvarez in around 1978 or 1979 - more than 30 years ago.

I greatly regret not continuing. We gave up partly because the only places to dance were bars and such where there were wall to wall people and the smoke was so thick you could cut it up into chunks.

I still have notes written by my late wife on ChaCha, Swing, Fox Trot, and Disco. We replaced dance with bowling, skiing, tennis and other activities.

I have gotten back into dance during the past 5 years and enjoy it greatly, lamenting the fact that I would be so much better now had I only continued. Whenever the chance comes up I try to encourage young people (especially my kids and grand kids) to 'get into dancing'.

Anyway, kudos to Maria for all the instruction over more than three decades!

Cheers to all, Nelson (aka Frank)

Article: Swing 101 Class 1 Follow Up

Hello Swing 101 Dancers,

Congratulations on stepping out of your comfort zone and into social dancing. One of my Salsa instructors said, "dancing will change your life" and it has for many people.

You all did fantastic.

Do not worry if there were things that you did not get. As the tutor in Blindside said when Michael Oher said he "did not get it," she said, "You do not get it yet. You will."

You will too. Everyone will learn everything you need to learn in this Swing 101 class.

We are not in a hurry. We are going to go at a nice slow pace that everyone can keep up. If this pace is too slow for anyone, you are invited to come to the class for experienced dancers.

Our next class is next Sunday January 29 from 6 to 7. If you know anyone who wants to join us, they still can. They can register here http://dept.sfcollege.edu/ce

Anyone who wants to join the Contra Dancing 101 class that takes place from 5 to 6 immediately before our Swing class, is welcome to join us and can register at the same link.

In our first class you learned the basic 6-count rhythm, which you can count Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick.

Slows are two beats of music and Quicks are 1 beat of music. Men start with their left and women with their right.

For men that would be Left-Slow, Right-Slow, Left, Right.
For women that would be Right-Slow, Left-Slow, Right, Left.

Each count is a step, meaning you change weight fully on each step. You do not just tap your foot. You put your foot down so that you can pick up your other foot.

You learned some partnering skills. Here are some of the rules:
- Everyone maintains their own balance
- Everyone does their own dancing
- Dance with your hands at waist level so they are available for your partner
- No pushing, no pulling, no grabbing, no reaching, no using force, no thumbs
- We learn to dance without giving weight, no tension and no pressure
- The man leads and the woman follows
- Lead means the man goes first only
- Lead does not mean direct or guide
- The man positions the couple on the dance floor
- The man initiates the choreography and keeps time to the music
- The woman follows the man
- The woman moves with the man so you are dancing together as one
- If the man does the wrong thing, the woman should follow the man

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Article: It Takes Devotion to Train a New Dancer

There were 25 people at Josh's West Coast Swing dance Wednesday night, almost all from Gainesville. That is really saying something.

Congratulations to all of you for hanging in there, dancers, teachers and organizers. It is not easy to learn to dance. Look at the number of people that drop out. You have accomplished something special, acquiring a unique skill to actively express yourself in our world that is mostly for spectators.

When I moved to Gainesville, there were no community swing dances like that. The only social dancing was at Maria Alvarez' Imperial Dance Studio.

My parents went to Maria's dance classes back in the day. I am not sure how long Maria has had her studio, but I guess a few decades.

It takes a long time to train a new dancer. Looking around the room, a lot of the people there, me included, have come through Maria's studio. If not for Maria's years of devotion to teaching us social dancing, I doubt if we would have had a swing dance this week.

I say devotion, because that is what it takes to do what Maria has done for all of us. All this time she has been teaching us to dance, she has had a full time job.

We have social dancing in Gainesville, because Maria laid and maintained the foundation on which we now enjoy the benefits.

Thank her and give her some love.

English Country Dancing Gainesville Repeating Mary Kay and Introducing a dance to Ashoken Farewell

Dear Dancers,

What a great dance last week!! Sarah invited some of her students to join us and we had 8, enthusiastic, very good young dancers! They are reading "Pride and Prejudice"--so when they are ready, we'll have to do Mr. Beveridge's Maggot from the movie. (Remember--you get in free the second time!! So come on back and now you will be experienced!) And Carol has dusted off her bread machine and we've been enjoying her efforts!

Our favorite dancing gentleman from Baltimore will be joining us this week!

This week we will be doing a new dance, Madeira Coastline, to the beautiful tune, Ashoken Farewell, a waltz written by Jay Ungar. He's also the person who wrote the exciting contra tune, Wizzard's Walk. And he wrote Lover's Waltz. Catie Condran Geist called this dance at St. Cloud and everyone loved it.

Here's Ashoken Farewell to listen to (our version will be a little faster to dance to) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN_ZKB_Hdbo

And we will be repeating the dance you saw on you tube in last week's email, "Mary Kay", because everyone loved the driving dance to the great tune. To clarify Mary Kay--you are making boxes or squares with another couple--first with the couple you've been dancing with, then you progress and do one with that next couple. One's (below) start by taking hands and leading up, while the two's start by falling back.

We're also planning the February 13 dance--Valentine's day! Plan to come and bring your sweetheart. Or just give yourself a treat of beautiful dancing and beautiful music. Remember, each Monday we have live music by Hoggetowne Fancy.

And...the gods are having an English dance to follow the February gods weekend, on Sunday afternoon, February 26.

Dances done last week were: (those starred were requested by dancers to do again this week and we will also be doing dances which were requested the week before; R is a repertoire dance)

We ask the dancers to star dances they want to do again--and they have gotten very creative. We have stars, flowers, smiley faces, and thumbs up!

Yellow Stockings (1's join hands & slip down 3 steps & back)

Geud Man of Ballengigh (LW one's lead through 2's; men through women; 2's through 1's; women through men)

Row Well, Ye Mariners (LW; long lines slip left 4 steps; slip R 4; clapping)

* Rafe's Waltz (LW, set & half gypsy 1 cnr, 2nd cnr, ptr, nbr)

* Knives and Forks (1's cast down; back to back; 2's repeat

Whirl-a-Jig (LW, 1st lady followed by her man, cast and join with 2ndman in star; then join 2nd woman in a star)

* Mary Kay (LW, Petit Fours)

* Passages (LW, whatever you do, turn half way!)

Dance with us every Monday evening:

308 W University Avenue
Upstairs (park underneath)
Cost $5 + donation for the musicians (their only compensation)
Lesson 6:45; Dancing 7 - 9:30 pm
Bring a snack to share
Bring a water bottle or cup for the earth!
