091217 Swing Dancing, Contra, Tango, English Country

Hello Gainesville Area Dancers and Friends,

Get in your Swing dancing with Richard, Josh and Bri, and Kurtis.

Lots of great dancing this weekend.

Saturday afternoon is an English Country Dance (ECD) with live music by Veronica and Ted Lane, who are also playing the Contra dance
Saturday night and the Waltz brunch on Sunday. ECD is Jane Austen style dancing, similar to Contra dancing. Easy to do. You can do
it the first time. It is sociable and a lot of fun.

Saturday night is a Contra dance and a new Tango milonga.

Marilyn Escue is offering to teach a beginners Argentine Tango class. tangogainesville@gmail.com

Might not get out a newsletter next week.

You should confirm all events this month before going.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

If you've ever seen any of the Jane Austen movies like "Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma", here is your chance to experience firsthand
the music and dance of that era. Each dance is explained and walked through without music first. Then the band plays while the dance
leader calls the steps and everyone dances. You don't need to bring a partner. You can find one there, and it is perfectly
acceptable to dance with the same gender if we have an imbalance.

Because of the uncertain future of the Tango y Te milonga at the moment, a group of local tango addicts have decided to give a
holiday gift to the Gainesville tango community by hosting a milonga on December 19 so that we can all dance at least one more time
before the holidays.

We hope that everyone in the Gainesville tango community (and surrounding communities) feels welcome to join us for a nice evening
of fellowship and great dancing.

All of you wannabe tango DJs, feel free to bring your favorite music (mp3 files on a USB drive or CDs preferred). And if you have a
favorite treat, please bring it to share.

Feel free to pass along this message to your friends. Looking forward to seeing you on the 19th.

091216 Israeli Dancing, International Dancing, Mercury

091216 Israeli Dancing, International Dancing, Mercury

Hello Gainesville Area Israeli Dancers and Friends,

Currently there is no scheduled Israeli Dancing for the rest of December, as far as I know.

International Folk Dancing is on Fridays and you can do some Israeli dancing there.

Special treat Veronica's band will be playing the Contra Dance this Saturday night.

Take advantage of some of the other dancing going on in town. If you do not get it already, write to me to get the Swing Newsletter.

You should confirm all events this month before going.

The best time to see Mercury for the next four months is this Friday right after sunset, in the east, low in the sky. You will need
a view of the horizon without trees, possibly Paynes Prairie, or better Cedar Key.

Article: Well Earned

Sunday two women friends of mine graduated with their PhDs.

Their dean and faculty advisor was also a woman. All three were the same age and had become close friends.

They had worked so hard it was beyond reason, seven days a week, evenings and a good part of the nights too.

They had given up their jobs, made barely any money and lived meagerly. The pressure filled, seemingly endless work had hung over
their heads with a real possibility of failure.

During graduation, undergraduates are marched on and off stage as fast as the announcers can say their names. Not so with PhD
graduates.

This university has only awarded 880 PhDs in 45 years. They make a big deal of conferring the doctorate degree, with a lot of
ceremony. There is a special reception the day before. At the graduation the doctorate candidates come in first and sit in the front
rows. The front of the program lists each PhD with their dissertation topic. A leader of the university speaks about the
significance of the doctorate degree and the expectation for them to take their turn as leaders in meeting society's challenges.

Each doctoral graduate goes up on stage with their faculty advisor. Their dissertation topic is announced. The faculty advisor and
some important guy puts the graduates newly earned hood over their heads and they shake hands. Then the new doctors shake hands and
get their photo taken with the president.

Since these two women had the same advisor, the three of them went up together and were announced one after the other.

Having the three of them on stage together and thinking about what they had done together for the last four years, choked me up a
little bit.

I need a better "Waa Hoooo", because they said they did not hear me.

Israeli Dancing this Thursday at B'nai Israel.
International Folk Dancing on Friday.

UF Tango meets on Thursday from 6 to 8 at Hillel.
This is open to public.

There is no Tango on Friday at UF.
Tango Y Te is not meeting on Saturdays until they find a new place.

There is Tango on Saturday December 19 at UTC.

Friday night the UF Volleyball team plays Penn State in the NCAA
Regional tournament at the O'Connell Center. Check it out. These
are really fun to watch and you can sit right down by the floor.
To get the best seat go behind the Penn State bench. There are
usually empty seats behind the visiting team's bench at the start
of the match. The team's change sides each game, so the second game
you will have the Gators right in front of you, close enough to hug,
but do not do that. You will get arrested.

You should confirm all events this month before going.

Congatulations to the football team for an incredible streak.

Happy Dancing and it is Great to be a Florida Gator,

Gators Get Beat Down by Alabama

Yes the Gators got beat up by Alabama. When you play a team as good as you, you lose half the time.

Alabama is a good team, as good as those Florida State and Tennessee teams we used to play. Teams as good as us.

I was proud of these Gators. I have been a Gator since I moved to Gainesville in 1971. When I got here, the cry of the Gator was,
"Wait until next year."

Since 1928, I believe, when the Gators had the best team in the country, there were a few guys that almost changed that, but not
quite.

We all know Spurrier and his players made the Gators mighty. For those who became Gators after the coming of the HBC, you might not
appreciate these times. For myself, it is and has always been great to be a Florida Gator.

Dance for Seasoned Citizens

From: Russella Brandman <drdance@ufl.edu>
Date: Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 5:30 PM

In case someone in your group might be interested, I've attached some information about a new dance program targeted for the needs
of participants over the traditional age. It is a service of Shands Arts in Medicine that is free to the community and is being
held at the beautiful new Cancer Hospital on the south side of Archer Road. Please pass this information along to anyone you may
know who might be interested. I hope to build an enjoyable group experience for all. If you have questions: drdance@ufl.edu.

Cheers,
Rusti Brandman

Shands announces a new program for the community:

Dance for Seasoned Citizens

Weekly dance workshops for having fun and taking care of yourself without guilt! Dance is good for your body, mind and spirit. The
workshops will be focused on the needs of participants age 60 and above, but we will not be checking ID's!

Time: 2:00 to 3:00 pm on Tuesdays starting November 17, 2009
Place: Shands Cancer Hospital, Criser Cancer Resource Center right off the main
Lobby
Free!
Registration: Not necessary. Just show up any Tuesday.

Details: The program will be organized around weekly or monthly themes that may be a specific decade (like the 40s, 60s, etc.), a
musical or dance style (e.g., swing, salsa, jazz, etc.) an environment or mood (tropical, winter wonderland, etc.). Participants
will have input into the choice of themes. The workshops will use dance techniques from jazz, modern, social dance, various national
styles, and even ballet where appropriate as well as encourage the participants to contribute their own ideas on how to address the
themes in movement. The intended effect is to have fun with others, but the side effects include retaining independence and the
ability to maintain activities of daily life physically, mentally and emotionally, socializing, and developing and maintaining a
sense of accomplishment.

Facilitator: Rusti Brandman is emeritus dance faculty at the University of Florida and a Shands Arts in Medicine dancer in
residence. She has been a professional performer, choreographer, and teacher and a project director for the National Institute on
Aging's Vital Visionaries program. She is a member and presenter for the National Center for Creative Aging, specializing in dance
programs for maintaining and enhancing health in later years.

Florida sales tax

From
http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/taxes/sales_tax.html

Florida Sales and Use Tax
Do I need to collect sales tax?

What is Taxable?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sales Tax
Florida law provides that each sale, admission charge, storage, or rental is taxable unless the transaction is specifically exempt.
Florida's general sales tax rate is 6%, however there is an established "bracket system" for collecting sales tax on any part of
each total taxable sale that is less than a whole dollar amount. Additionally, a discretionary sales surtax is imposed by many
Florida counties. To compute the Florida sales tax rate for each county, you add the county imposed discretionary sales surtax rate
to the general sales and use tax rate.

Discretionary Sales Surtax
Under specific conditions, Florida counties are authorized to levy a discretionary sales surtax on most transactions that are
subject to sales and use tax. A dealer who sells and delivers taxable merchandise or taxable services is required to collect the
surtax at the rate imposed in the county where the merchandise or service is delivered. For motor vehicle and mobile home sales, use
the surtax rate of the county where the vehicle or mobile home will be registered.

Only the first $5,000 of a single sale of tangible personal property is subject to discretionary sales surtax if the property is
sold as a single item, in bulk, as a working unit, or as part of a working unit. The $5,000 limit does not apply to commercial
rentals, transient rentals, or services.

Use Tax and Consumption
Use tax complements and is applied in the same manner as sales tax. The use tax rate and sales tax rate are the same, including
discretionary sales surtax, if applicable. Use tax is due on purchases made out of state and brought into Florida within 6 months of
the purchase date. Also, if you purchase a product tax-exempt that you plan to sell at retail, but end up using it at your place of
business, the "use" of the product is subject to tax. If you purchase materials that are "consumed" in a manufacturing process to
create your end product but are not part of the end product, those materials are subject to tax.

The "use" component of the sales and use tax provides uniform taxation on items that are purchased outside Florida but are used or
stored in the state. If the item brought into Florida is subject to tax, a credit for lawfully imposed taxes paid to another state,
a U.S. territory, or the District of Columbia is permitted. Credit is not given for taxes paid to another country.

Who Must Register to Collect Tax?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before you open a business in Florida, you must first find out whether your business activity, product use, or consumption will be
subject to Florida sales tax. Some government agencies require you to register with the Department of Revenue before they will issue
a license.

Here are some examples of business activities, product uses, and consumptions requiring the collection of sales tax or the payment
of use tax:

Sales of taxable items at retail.
Repairs or alterations of tangible personal property.
Rentals, leases, or licenses to use real property (for example, commercial office space, mini-warehouses, or short-term living
accommodations).
Rental or lease of personal property (for example, vehicles, machinery, equipment, or other goods).
Charges for admission to any place of amusement, sport, or recreation.
Operating private membership clubs that provide recreational or physical fitness facilities.
Manufacturing or producing goods for sale at retail.
Importing goods from any state or foreign country, for sale at retail or for use in the business.
Selling service warranty contracts.
Ordering and using, on a regular basis, mail-order products on which no sales tax was charged.
Operating vending or amusement machines.
Providing taxable services (for example, investigative and crime protection services, interior nonresidential cleaning services, and
nonresidential pest control services).
If you are unsure whether your business is required to register to collect sales tax, contact Taxpayer Services (see "Whom to
Call").

Who Is Exempt?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Federal, state, county, and city governments; and qualified nonprofit organizations, such as religious, charitable, scientific,
educational, or veteran organizations (as defined in section 212.08, Florida Statutes) do not have to pay sales tax on certain
purchases. If you believe your organization may qualify for an exemption, you must complete and submit an Application for Consumer's
Certificate of Exemption (Form DR-5). See below for information on obtaining forms.

The federal government is exempt from the requirement to collect sales tax. In addition, qualified religious institutions are not
required to collect and remit sales tax on the sale or lease of tangible personal property.

How Do I Register to Collect Sales Tax?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can register to collect and/or report tax via the Department's Internet site. Go to www.myflorida.com/dor and click on
e-Services. If you do not have Internet access, you can complete a paper Application to Collect and/or Report Tax in Florida (Form
DR-1). Obtain Form DR-1 from your local DOR service center or one of the contacts listed below.

After your registration application is approved, you will receive a Certificate of Registration (Form DR-11), an Annual Resale
Certificate (Form DR-13), and your tax return forms. The Annual Resale Certificate may be used for tax-exempt purchases or rentals
of property or services that you intend to resell or re-rent as part of your business. If the goods purchased for resale are later
used (not resold), you must report and pay use tax on those items, plus any applicable penalties and interest. There are additional
liabilities for intentional misuse of an annual resale certificate.

How Is Tax Calculated?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sales tax is calculated at the time of each transaction. When sales transactions fall between whole dollar amounts, use the bracket
system to calculate tax due when any part of each total sale is less than a whole dollar amount. The total tax collected must be
calculated on the total amount of the sale. The sales tax and discretionary sales surtax must be separately shown on each invoice or
other evidence of the sales transaction. Taxpayers must remit the actual tax collected which in many cases is more than a straight
percentage of the sales or untaxed purchases. You can obtain a Sales Tax Rate Table (Form DR-2X) and individual bracket cards from
your local DOR service center or one of the contacts listed below.

Electronic Filing and Payment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Department offers the convenience of using our free and secure Internet site to file and pay sales tax, or you may purchase
software from an approved vendor. If you would like to voluntarily file and pay taxes electronically, you may do so. However, if you
pay $20,000 or more in sales and use tax between July 1 and June 30 (the state fiscal year), you will receive instructions to begin
using electronic funds transfer (EFT) for the next calendar year.

Reference Material

Leading Successful Organizational Change an Action Team Approach From University of Florida

The future of Florida leadership matters to us!

LEADING SUCCESSFUL ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE:

AN ACTION TEAM APPROACH

A two-day program to help your leadership teams

implement and manage change more effectively

About This Program:

With the ups and downs of a turbulent economy over the last few years, change is the “new normal”. Change in strategies for a down economy…change in strategies for a rebounding economy…change in roles and responsibilities. People don’t like change and often resist it. This can have a negative effect on your organization’s ability to adapt to needed change.

How is your organization dealing with and adapting to all the change? Are your leaders equipped to be not only change agents but change masters? Let us help develop your leaders into change masters!

As part of our Leadership Development Core Curriculum, this program was developed to help your leadership teams understand, implement and manage change more effectively. Change can be implemented and managed successfully if your leadership team can develop change mastery skills. This new program is designed to give them those skills.

It is currently only available to be delivered on-site to your leadership teams…and can be customized for your team and organization as well.

What Your Leaders Will Learn:

·         Strengthen your teams’ internal support skills

·         Strengthen your teams’ individual and collective skills for leading change and transition:

-          Individual and team orientation to change

-          Organizational change mastery skills

·         Recognize and clearly define change issues

·         Plan for the successful short/long-term implementation of change

·         Put in place a peer coaching methodology for on-going skill development and support

Who Will Benefit:

·         Executive leaders who are responsible for planning change initiatives

·         Mid-level and front-line leaders who are responsible for implementing change initiatives

How Your Organization Will Benefit:

·         Resistance to change is reduced

·         Adapting to change is improved

·         Trust and collaboration are increased

·         Communication is improved within the leadership teams and throughout the organization

·         Launching change initiatives will be more successful
