Israeli Dancing Monday, Brazilian Batizado and Samba, Rumi Universal Peace, Free Clogging, Contra, Slow Lindy

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

Come out to Israeli Dancing this Monday May 2 at 7 at B'nai Israel after our Passover break. Next Monday May 9, help lead the Gainesville community in dancing at Hillel from 6:30 to 8:30 with live music by the Klezmer Katz for Yom Hatzmaot Israeli Independence Day, free.

Send your friends to a super easy, Beginner Israeli Folk Dance 4-week series for new dancers on June 6, 13, 20 and 27 offered thru Santa Fe College Community Education held at B'nai Israel from 7 to 8. Best time to start.

Lots of other interesting, fun folk dance opportunities this week.

Saturday April 30, at 1:00 is Brazilian Samba and Street Dance with guest instructor Rebekah at 308. If you want to move and work up a sweat, this is for you. Nobody is more lively and moves more fluidly than the Brazilians. Next week is the Batizado with performances on Saturday May 7 at the Boltin Center.

This Saturday from 3 to 9 join Rumi by Candelight with Dances of Universal Peace organized by Diana Kanoy.

You have a tough choices at 4 on Sunday May 1: take in either a Contra Dance at the Boltin Center or free beginner clogging lessons with Kelli.

Better still, learn clogging from 4 to 5, do Contra until 7 then come over to 308 West for a beginners class in Slow Lindy, a true American folk dance, at 308 West until 8:30 (half price if you go to the Contra dance) followed by an hour of Hustle! Now that is the way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

If you know people who have a fear of dancing, send them to our Social Dancing for People with Two Left Feet series on three Sunday nights, June 5, 12 and 19, from 6 to 7 at 308 West. Guaranteed to be comfortable for anyone that can walk. Offered thru Santa Fe College.

Next Saturday May 7 come out for great music, friends and dancing at our Swinging Soul Dance Party at 308 West with a lesson from 7:30 to 8:30 then dancing until 11.

Singers try out for Show Stoppers with Jessica at soundlovve@gmail.com.

JNet meets next Thursday May 5 from 5:30 to 7 at Leonardo's 706 with a speaker on Solar Electricity.

In 2005 there were 4,678 Israeli Dances according to this enjoyable article The Surprising History of Israeli Folk Dancing.

Balboa tonight, Slow Lindy Sunday, Two Left Feet, Tango, Hustle!

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

This newsletter is out early to encourage you to go to Christian's Balboa class tonight, starting with a lesson at 8 pm at 308 West, first in the small room, then moving to the big room. Balboa is a companion to Swing, danced in close embrace. It is a lot of fun, not too hard and I hear they need some more men tonight.

Sunday night starts our 4 week series in Slow Lindy. Lindy is the mother of all swing dances, of which East and West Coast Swings are derivatives, as is Jive, Jitterbug and Shag. Lindy is the most versatile Swing dance. You can do Lindy to any of the music for any of the other Swing dances and so expand your repetoire so you can dance to most anything. Slow Lindy is what my parents generation danced to and has probably been the most popular type of social dancing since it was invented. This series is based on a Joel Green (from Daytona and multi-year winner of Swing Dance USA, www.JamminSwing.com) workshop I took in Ft. Lauderdale. Even though we were all experienced dancers, he started right from the beginning because he said no one had good basics. This class will start with those same basics. Joel was my first dance instructor that taught Swing without using tension. His workshop helped me the most of any I have been to.

Tango Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 308 West. Friday night with UF Tango Club. Saturday night and Sunday afternoon with Tango Pavadita. Each session starts with a lesson so plenty of opportunity for instruction.

The UF Swing Club is not in session Friday.

After Lindy on Sunday night, stay for a lot of fun, and no extra charge, with Hustle!

Richard will be hosting West Coast Swing on Tuesday nights at the Boltin Center. You also have Josh's West Coast Swing party on Wednesday next week and Thursday's West Coast Classs with Judi.

Put all those West Coast Swing sessions to good use at our once-a-month Saturday night Swinging Soul Dance Party on May 7.

If you know someone who wants to get started dancing, we have two short novice series in June offered thru Santa Fe College: (a) Social Dancing for People with Two Left Feet and (b) Beginner Israeli Folk Dancing. Both guaranteed to make anyone feel comfortable dancing.

This Saturday April 30 is Brazilian Samba with a visiting guest instructor Rebekah at 308 West. Next week the Brazilian Cultural Arts Exchange has their annual Batizado with their main event and performance on Saturday May 7 from 10 to 2 at the Boltin Center. www.bcaeonline.org

Death Letter Blues meets only once a month, this coming Tuesday May 3.

Some other announcements for this Sunday, that are usually only in the Folk Dance newsletter, but worth your while.

Free introductory Clogging Classes with Kelli for 4 Sundays May 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 4 to 5. No experience and no special shoes needed, unless you are near me, then steel toes recommended.

Sunday May 1 Contra dance at the Boltin Center from 4 to 7. Sociable and easy enough for new dancers. Afterwards come over to the Lindy Hop class (see below) for half price for those attending the Contra dance.

UF Swing Club Dance Troupe

Saturday April 30 Rumi by Candelight, 3 to 9 with potluck dinner. Dances of Universal Peace. www.peacockparadise.org

Happy Dancing,

No Israeli Dancing, Free Klogging, Brazilian Dance, Balboa, Slow Lindy, English, Contra

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

See below for details of four new upcoming series of beginning dance classes specifically for newcomers to get started dancing. Let your friends know about Clogging, Lindy swing, beginning Israeli and Dancing for People with Two Left Feet.

No Israeli Dancing today, Monday April 25 due to Passover. Israeli dancing starts again next Monday May 2. For Israeli Dancing, go to Kol Simcha on Wednesday.

For Monday night dancing, go to English Country Dancing tonight at 308 West.

Brazilian Samba and Street Dance is Wednesday nights from 7 to 8 at 308 West. Come this Saturday for a special guest instructor from 1 to 2.

Try Christian's monthly Balboa class for something different, this Thursday night at 308 West at 8:00.

Sunday May 1 is a Contra dance at the Boltin Center, sociable and easy enough for new dancers. Afterwards come over to the Lindy Hop class (see below) for half price for those attending the Contra dance.

Free introductory Klogging Klasses with Kelli's First Klass Kloggers for 4 Sundays May 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 4 to 5. No dance experience and no special shoes needed. Although, if you are anywhere near me, you better wear steel-toed boots. Fun for all ages. Best deal in town with a real pro.

Afterwards get something to eat and come over to beginning Lindy Swing classes at 7 at 308 West. This new series starts Sunday May 1. Lindy is the first, most versatile, most innocent and most fun of swing dances. This series will be to music on the slower side. Expand your repetoire so you can dance to any swing music.

In June, you have available two new classes for new dancers offered through Santa Fe College Community Educaton.

1. Beginning Israeli Dancing - dance to a higher purpose. Four Mondays in June from 7 to 8 at B'nai Israel. Suitable for people who have never danced before. A great way to start dancing.

2. Social Dancing for People with Two Left Feet - for people with a fear of dancing. Three Sunday nights starting June 5 from 6 to 7 at 308 West. Guaranteed to be comfortable for anyone that can walk.

Singers can try out for the Glee of Gainesville via Jessica at soundlovve@gmail.com

Lindy Hop in May, Balboa, Two Left Feet, Tango, Hustle!

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

The UF Swing Club is not in session Friday.

Try Swing and Sway Friday night at the Boltin Center from 8 to 11, $9. Nice floor and good music, but you will need to bring some people with you to dance with.

Tango Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 308 West. Friday night with UF Tango Club.

Saturday night and Sunday brunch with Tango Pavadita. If you are from out of town, the fourth Saturday of the month is a great weekend to join us and meet people from all over North Florida.

Join us Sunday night for a lot of fun with Hustle!

Next Thursday April 28 is Christian's monthly Balboa class. Try something new.

You can still catch Richard's Waltz class on Tuesday at the Boltin Center. This is useful for the Waltz brunches we hold once a month at 308 West.

Learn Lindy Hop, the most versatile and the mother of all Swing dances, four Sunday nights beginning May 1 from 7 to 8:30 at 308 West.

Saturday April 30 is Brazilian Samba with a visiting guest instructor at 308 West. We also have Samba on Wednesday nights. If you want to move to music, try Samba. Salsa makes Salsa and Zumba look tame.

Coming up Saturday May 7 is our next Swinging Soul Dance Party at 308 West.

Free Tango practice on Wednesdays in a private home downtown. Contact David at david.chayes@gmail.com

Support fellow dancer Will Tucker and have a rousing good time at the Thomas Center on Thursday ta 6:30 or Saturdays at 11:00 am at The Commedia Talse of King Arthur. Free through May 21.

Can you sing. Try out for the Glee of Gainesville. Contact Jessica at soundlovve@gmail.com

For some excellent folk dancing and an interesting implementation of computer algorithm through dance see:

www.i-programmer.info/news/150-training-a-education/2255-sorting-algorithms-as-dances.html

Mark your calendar for June:

If you know someone with two left feet who you have always wanted to get dancing, we have just the class for them, Social Dancing for People with Two Left Feet, offered through Santa Fe College, for the first three Sundays in June. Guaranteed to make anyone who can walk, feel comfortable dancing.

Also offered via Santa Fe College, for the first four Mondays in June, dance to a higher purpose and join our novice Israeli Dancing Class at B'nai Israel. This is the best time to start, with others who are also starting for the first time.

On Sunday June 26, Josh Angel is bringing two-time national champion Patti Jobst to 308 West for West Coast Swing private lessons, workshop and dancing.

Turning Over a New Leaf

From the Director

April 14, 2011

Happy Earth Month!

It has been an exciting spring here at the Office of Sustainability.  First and foremost, I'd like to invite you to visit our newly refreshed beta website –
sustainable.ufl.edu. After many months reorganizing the site and redesigning the look, we hope the new site continues to deliver comprehensive content with a more user-friendly interface.  Helping to keep you informed is one of the first and most important jobs we have, and this site is one of many tools that equip and empower you in your efforts to be part of a sustainable UF.

As a testament to your efforts, we hosted our Campus Earth Day event April 1.The event was a time to commend sustainability throughout UF over the past year, reflect on the goals and challenges that lie ahead, and for the community at large to get involved in simple, meaningful ways. We also hosted collections for various items, including office supplies, books, clothing and personal hazardous waste, and they were an enormous success. Students, staff and faculty dropping off a multitude of items for donation or proper disposal at sites across campus, and we had a record turnout for
President Machen's speech and our Sustainable Solutions awards.

As President Machen noted, "If you threw a dart anywhere on our campus map, you would likely hit an area touched by our sustainability efforts. You may have seen solar cells atop Powell Hall, projected to produce over 91,000 kilowatt hours this year alone. Or, you may work or go to class in one of our 17 LEED-certified green buildings. You may park your car in the Norman or O'Connell Center garages that were recently retrofitted with energy-efficient lights, saving UF $28,000 and over 300,000 kilowatt hours a year. Better yet, you may have been one of the 9.3 million riders on RTS last year - up by over a million since we started on this path in 2006 and more than double the per capita ridership of other cities in Florida." Thank you all for your contributions to sustainability at UF.  It has been a remarkable year, and these reflections leave me humbled and optimistic about continuing our pursuits.

We'd also like to thank the many partners we have worked with over the past few weeks to host a number of events and activities on campus: the Dean of Students Office, the Center for Leadership and Service, the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, UF MBA and ACCENT for their support in hosting
Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle on March 22; Cinema Verde in partnering with us to host a screening of the documentary "Tapped" on March 23; and the University of Florida News Bureau, University Athletic Association, and Physical Plant for their participation in this year's Earth Hour. The City of Gainesville and Alachua County also joined UF this year in marking Earth Hour, reflecting the synergistic goals and efforts continually taking shape in our community.

As part of UF's commitment to be
Carbon Neutral by 2025, our office partnered with Neutral Gator to sponsor the nation's first ever carbon neutral Dance Marathon event and worked with event coordinators to encourage all participants to bring their own water bottles to help reduce waste.  Dance Marathon at UF is already legendary: it is the third largest in country and raised $713,000 for the Children's Miracle Network at Shands Children's Hospital in 2011. It now has one more superlative to add to its history, and we look forward to working with future DM planners on more ways to make the event as sustainable as it is charitable. We have also partnered with the O'Connell Center to make spring commencement carbon neutral.

Another upcoming event to keep in mind is the Sustainable Products Trade Show on Tuesday, April 19. Join the Purchasing Department at their sixth annual show for a great opportunity to meet sustainable product vendors, try sustainable products, and learn more about UF's Sustainable Purchasing Policy. The event is open to the public and there will be free food and door prizes: 10am-2 pm in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom. For a full schedule of upcoming events, please visit our
office calendar.

As the trees and flowers bloom across campus and we begin to prepare for break, it's a perfect time to think about ways to turn over a new leaf. From turning your home thermostat up during the day when you're away, to purchasing some
local carbon offsets for those summer trips and installing a rain barrel for watering your landscape– summer provides unique opportunities for making small changes with big impacts.

Sincerely,
Anna Prizzia
Director, Office of Sustainability

Faces of Sustainability
Sharon C. Blansett
Assistant Director of Housing for Research & Organizational Development

With Sharon Blansett, associate director of Housing for Research and Organizational Development, at the helm of sustainability efforts, Housing and Residence Life's commitment runs deep. Light-switch covers and the "Computers Off!" campaign encourage energy conservation, clotheslines are being placed at various graduate and family housing facilities, and the "Can You Take a 5 Minute Shower" shower timer program encourages and assists residents with conserving water. The shower timers, both an effective tool and one that is popular among students, was a recipient of a 2009 Sustainable Solution Award, and this past fall, the Housing team logged the most miles as part of the annual One Less Car Challenge.

Sharon's commitment does not stop there. For over five years, students living in the 24 University of Florida residence halls have been competing to be the most energy efficient and water conscious. Each January and February, the UF Eco-Challenge provides campus housing residents the opportunity to compete against each other in waste reduction and resource conservation, while also providing numerous other way to get informed and engaged on sustainability at UF.  The program is sponsored and coordinated by UF Housing and Residence Education and the Inter-Residence Hall Association (IRHA), with support from the Office of Sustainability and Gator Dining Services. The first month of the challenge focuses on water conservation, and the second on energy reduction, with activities to reduce waste promoted throughout both months. Sharon is one of many who has been instrumental in the growing success and continued expansion of the Eco-Challenge, and comprehensive sustainability programming in Housing, acting as an advisor to Britany Ziems, IRHA's environmental concerns director.

UF Conducts Organics Audits at campus dining locations

As one of many efforts working to understand the University of Florida's waste streams, Gator Dining Services, in partnership with the Office of Sustainability, began conducting audits of the organics waste stream at University of Florida dining facilities. Gator Dining's Sustainability Manager, Dana Falstad, UF Zero Waste Coordinator, Joseph Floyd, and Office of Sustainability Intern, Kathleen Kirsch, spent many hours sorting waste, weighing food, and educating staff and students about food waste reduction at Broward Fresh Food Company, Gator Corner, Burger King, and the Reitz Union.

Based upon an initial waste audit conducted in 2005, organics accounts for over 15% of UF's total waste footprint, and thus presents a considerable challenge in meeting the university's zero waste goal. The information yielded from this organics specific audit will help critically inform the development and implementation of a comprehensive campus composting program.

Gator CSA program returning for fall

The Office of Sustainability is proud to announce that the pilot year of the Gator CSA program has been a wonderful success!  This year's season is beginning to wrap up, but we encourage everyone to sign up for next year's program.  In a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, local consumers become farm members by paying a given amount of money at the beginning of the season, either as a lump sum or as installments. The up-front payment helps buy the seed and other inputs necessary for the season, allowing the farmer to concentrate on land stewardship and growing good food that is provided to consumers fresh and local each week.

Sign-ups with farmers begin on April 1st and will continue until all of the farmers' spots are filled.  In addition to our location on Bledsoe Drive, we are adding a second CSA drop-off location near Shands and the Health Science Center next fall.  Pickups will also remain on Monday late afternoons-evenings.  Whether you are faculty, staff, or student, the CSA program is for you! Gator CSA member Jeff Feller puts it best: "Every Monday is like Christmas day for me.  You pick up your CSA…and it keeps on giving all week."

Please email
info@sustainability.ufl.edu or visit sustainable.ufl.edu/gatorcsa   for more information.  Hope to see you in the fall!

The question is not 'Can you make a difference?' You already do make a difference. It's just a matter of what kind of a difference you want to make during your life on this planet.
