West Coast Swing Dance, Ballroom, Beginner Swing, Lindy Continues

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

Josh's West Coast Swing dance is this Saturday night at 308 West. Go to this dance and get half off on Sunday Lindy.

Sunday night Lindy Swing (7 to 8:30) and Hustle (8:30 to 9) is back for 4 weeks on October 2, 9, 23 and 30, continuing with the Lindy Rhythm Turn. This week we will review what we have learned, then connect to 6-Count basic, explore how to signal the 6-Count or 8-Count or longer movements. Anyone with dance experience can attend these sessions. No partner needed. You can come if you missed prior classes.

If you do not have any organized dance experience, you can join us for Swing dancing for new dancers from 6 to 7 on the same Sundays in October at 308 West. If this class turns out to be too slow for you, you can stay for the Lindy Swing class that follows it. This will give you a head start on Lindy Swing Dancing 101, which starts October 30 and is offered through Santa Fe College Community Education.

The more you dance the more you save. These Sunday night programs are $10 general, $5 students. If you go to any organized dancing during the prior week, these Sunday programs are only $5 general and $3 students. If you go to two organized dance sessions, Sunday nights are free.

When you dance more than once a week, you get better a lot faster. You can swing dance with Richard on Tuesdays, Essie on Wednesdays and Judi on Thursdays.

This Sunday is Tango Pavadita's monthly afternoon practice session.

For those brand new to Tango, join Andrea's absolute beginners class October 8-9. pham.andrea@gmail.com

Also next weekend, Saturday and Sunday October 8 and 9, is UF Tango's yearly fundraiser Tango for the Cure Workshop and Milonga benefit with workshops, dancing and brunch.

Sign up for Kay Picart's ballroom classes on Fridays evenings from 6 to 7 on October 21 and 28. This is for people with dance experience, but you do not need to be a ballroom dancer. That is why you go to class. Take advantage of this chance to learn ballroom dancing from Kay. Contact Kay to let her know you are interested. kinaestheticsllc@gmail.com

October 28 is Imperial Dance Studio's 2011 Showcase. Advanced purchase required. 352-375-7763

Happy Dancing,
Andy

A friend of mine wrote me an email about her troubles.

I wrote her back:

  Sorry
  Love, Andy

She was mad, because she thought I did not take her troubles seriously.

So, I wrote her this back to correct the misunderstanding.

  Sorry :(
  Love, Andy

She said that was not good enough. She said I needed to write this.

Article: Dances From Week 3 of Israeli Folk Dancing 101

Congratulations to everyone on your progress in Israeli Folk Dancing 101
on Monday. You surprised me. I did not expect you would be able to do last
week's dances so well and that we would be able to learn three new dances.

The next class is next Monday, September 26 from 7 to 8 pm.

Be sure to go to www.GainesvilleDance.com and
sign up for the Israeli and Folk Dance newsletter.
It is the second newsletter on the left side.

You can also sign up for the Swing, Ballroom and Social Dance newsletter.

All the dances we are learning are from what I like to call the classic period of Israeli dancing.
These are the dances from the early years of the re-born state of Israel up to about 1980.
The first dance was done around 1924. Of course, the real first dance goes back to ancient times,
as it is written "David danced and leapt before the Lord."

You learned three dances on Monday night. Here they are with links to a video.

1. Klezmer (Aveinu Shalom Aleichem)
   www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ0uXBARBMc

2. Ma Navu
   www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IUJ0cjYaq4

3. Yedid Nefesh
   www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCQLyiXlJH8

Following are links to the song lyrics of all the dances you have learned.

Eretz Eretz Eretz – Land, Land, Land
Eretz refers to the Land of Israel
  www.hebrewsongs.com/?song=eretzeretzeretz

Klezmer - Instrumental only, but here is a link to another song
in the same tradition, Hevenu Shalom Aleichem which means Peace Unto You.
Shalom Aleichem is a traditional greeting from Eastern European Jewry.
  www.hebrewsongs.com/?song=hevenushalomaleichem

Ma Navu - How Pleasant, from Isaiah
  www.hebrewsongs.com/song-manavu.htm

Nigun Atik – Ancient Melody. A nigun is a song without words, often
hummed on Shabbat as a form of prayer and often before the meal between
washing hands and the motzi, the blessing over the bread, during which
time you are not supposed to speak.
  www.hebrewsongs.com/?song=nigunatik

Od Lo Ahavti Dai – I Have Not Loved Enough, who has?
  www.hebrewsongs.com/song-odloahavtidai.htm

Tzadik Katamar – Righteous Man Will Flourish, from Psalm 92, the Psalm for Shabbat.
  www.hebrewsongs.com/?song=tzadikkatamar

Yedid Nefesh - Soul Mate, sung every Friday night to welcome the Shabbat,
as the Shabbat is symbolized as the bride of the People of Israel, Israel's soul mate.

Article: You Learn What You Are Ready to Learn

When I was in third grade, my Dad gave me a book "How to Think Ahead in Chess". I have read this book many times and told people the book was about what opening you should play.

Having just finished reading the book again, I started rereading it right away. I was looking for how to play the middle game, not the opening, and thought maybe there was something I missed. Here is the first sentence of the book.

"This book has been written to show you what to do after the opening stage has been passed."

Did I miss the whole point of the book? Not exactly. Their solution was to learn one opening for white and two for black so you know what type of middle game you are going to play. I had gotten a lot out of the book, but even after reading it many times, there is a lot I have missed, like the first sentence.

Learning to dance is a lot like that. There is more there than we think. You cannot rush the process. You learn what you are ready to learn. You miss what you are not ready for.

Article: Message for the Holiday Season, We Feel the Years Slipping Away

[I enjoyed this article and wanted to share it with you.]
We can feel it in the air. Summer is falling away and as it does Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are upon us. Soon we will join with family and friends in what I know will be a memorable and sweet opportunity to share and celebrate. Nevertheless, the passage of time is palpable during this season and we feel the years slipping by even faster and faster.

English Country Dancing Always on Monday

Dear Dancers,

We just arranged a vacation around Mondays so that you will know that you can always count on there being English Country Dancing on Mondays whether you see an email or not!

We just got back from an English weekend in Atlanta, "Fandango".  It was wonderful.  The music was delightful and exhilarating.  There were 4 long lines of dancers filling the hall.  Twenty-one people came from Florida!   But I learned that you dancers on Monday nights are really the best!! NOOOO we are not just saying this.  One dance we did at the weekend, "Good Man of Cambridge", we've done before on Monday nights.  And you all got it!  But alas---during the weekend we did it and the second couples didn't get into the line of four correctly (9 out of 10 times!)....so we are going to do it this Monday because we need that satisfaction of doing it right!!  Here's a video of the dance from Youtube where they are doing it correctly:

Dancers please read this....Scott Higgs was the caller.....here is his advice for dancers which we really liked:  If someone makes a mistake, please do not scowl or push them to the correct place.  Just go where you are supposed to go. If someone offers you the wrong hand take it; if someone passes on the wrong side, smile and go with it.

We very much like this spirit of having fun and going with the flow.  When I make a mistake I know it.  I do not need someone to say something to me or push me around--I already feel bad and it only makes me feel worse--so keep this in mind for others.

And for those of you who came to Fandango (Trish and Michael) and wanted to do Dr. Vincent's Delight, we will do it on Monday.

Please come have fun with us!  Live beautiful music every Monday evening with Hoggetowne Fancy. We pick dances which are lively, waltzy, and stately--all alot of fun.
Everyone is welcome.  No experience, special dress, or partner is necessary. Come join us for a wonderful evening of dancing.  If you are new or have only been once or twice, please come back.  New people have been doing fine by following along.  They always comment that everyone was so nice and understanding.  We've all been new and we understand.  The only requirement is to bring a smile and to have fun.

Dances done last week were:  (those starred were requested by dancers to do again this week)

Bryon's Boutade (4 cpl change diagonally, change across; 2's & 3's go though 4's arch)

Fine Lady of Homewood (LW 4 cpl star right, turn single left; star left, turn single right)

Woodstock Park (LW, 1st cpl half figure of 8; man down, lady up)

* Zither Man (3 cpl; pousette with partner, men forward; pousette with neighbor, men forward)

* Whiskey Before Dinner (LW, in a wavy line, set right & left in triple time)
Sunlight Through Draperies (LW; 1st corners back-to-back, catch eyes, turn right, then gypsy right with partner)

* Barbarini's Tambourine (LW, First corners cast around neighbor, pass in center, cast around partner)

* Look Both Ways (LW Trip to Paris cross, turn by right half way; while the other couple set & turn single)

* Hazelfern Place (LW, Line of 4 lead up; 2's in the middle (do some stuff); lines lead down, 2's in middle, 1's have changed sides)

* Evergreen (LW women walk out of the set followed by partner, turn and back the man into place with eyes!)

Oh you missed Fandance--here's another opportunity...The Florida English Dance weekend is coming soon, in October.  Please sign up for an enjoyable weekend.  Since this is the only one in Florida it is important that the dance community support those who put so much work into creating such an event in our backyard.  It's also a bargain.  The price of $140 (if double room) includes 2 nights lodging in a beautiful historic inn, dancing Friday evening, Saturday morning, afternoon, and evening, and Sunday morning, 2 wonderful continental breakfasts (fresh Belgian waffles), and Saturday lunch.  You will dance to the beautiful music of Full Circle and be led by David Millstone, an experienced caller who will call traditional English dances, both old and new.  You get to dance in the beautiful ballroom!!  You will see familiar faces and meet new friends.

Dance with us every Monday evening:

October the Florida Gators play Alabama, LSU and Auburn all National Champions

The last five BCS national champions in NCAA college football are:

2010 – Auburn
2011 – Alabama
2009 – Tim Tebow (I mean University of Florida)
2008 – LSU
2007 – Florida

The first three weeks of next month, the University of Florida Gators schedule is:

October 1 – Alabama at Florida
October 8 – Florida at LSU
October 15 – Florida at Auburn

During that three week stretch, all of the last five national champions will play,
and in every game, both teams will have been a national champion in the last five years.

Can that have happened before?

Doubtful.

Huh you say? It's a new dance that we'll be trying on Monday night at English Country Dancing. Here's a clip of the dance from Pinewoods:

And we'll be doing another recent favorite, Hazelfern Place, seen in the following clip --it's the third dance with lines going up and down the hall. This is a clip from last year's Fandango weekend in Atlanta which many from Florida will be travelling to this coming weekend.

As usual our newcomers were a joy!  Little did they know they started with 3 and 4 star dances and they did great! (So please come back!)  Thanks to all the dancers for helping others with body language and subtle hints.

So come have fun with us!

The Hop Ground (LW, 1st couple set 2x to second woman then circle with her; repeat with 2nd man)

Christina (LW, Palindromic dance)

* Hand in Hand (LW, 1st Woman puts out right hand for neighbor; left for partner—line goes forward)

Sunlight Through Draperies (LW; 1st corners back-to-back, catch eyes, turn right, then gypsy right with partner)

Whiskey Before Dinner (LW, in a wavy line, set right & left in triple time)

* Puck's Deceit (LW, 2's cast up landing behind one's)

Lover's Knot (Lw, double mad robbin shuttle; very contraish)

Christchurch Bells (LW 1st man turn 2nd woman R; Partner L; second man corner L; partner right)

* Autumn in Amherst (LW; draw pousette to 2's face down (1's up); fwd dbl & back)

The Florida English Dance weekend is coming soon, in October.
