West Coast Swing Workshop and Party, Contra, Follow Your Bliss

Gainesville Ocala Swing and Social Dance Newsletter 2012-11-30

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

Tonight is our last night at 308 West. Come out with UF Tango with a lesson at 8 and dancing until 11 pm.

Tomorrow, Saturday night is a West Coast Swing Workshop Sabrina Paxmann and Dance with Josh Angel at Studio Z on NW 39 Avenue and NW 22 Drive. There are no Wednesday classes scheduled for December, so make sure you get out this Saturday night.

Sunday from 4 to 7 pm is the monthly Contra dance at the Boltin Center.

Next week is English Country Dancing, Ballroom with Ray and Eileen and International Folk Dancing.

Richard said he was going to teach Hustle this month on Tuesday nights at the Boltin Center, but I have not seen an email from him yet, so confirm with Richard.

A lot of groups are on break in December, so this is a good time to join David and Thuy on Tuesday nights for free to learn Tango, beginners encouraged, all levels welcome, no partner needed. This is downtown, near the library. Contact David, david.chayes@gmail.com

See the schedule for details and more sessions.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

- If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in you field of bliss, and they open doors to you. I say, follow your bliss and do not be afraid, and doors will open when you did not know they were going to be. ~ Joseph Campbell

English Country Dancing Come to Help with the Newcomers!

Dear Dancers,

We're hoping to have several newcomers this Monday, so if you have experience dancing with us please come to help out. The more experienced people they encounter, the easier it will be for them to learn the dances.

If you are a newcomer or are bringing one, please try to be there by 6:45 for a lesson. It helps to learn some of the terminology and patterns before starting the dances. It doesn't take long and you aren't expected to remember everything; it just helps to have familiarity. Dancing English is like learning to read. If you know the building blocks you can put it all together.

Here is a link for some English dance terms:

http://cdny.org/page/ecd-figures

This week we will be doing a few dances new to our group. One will be "The Haymakers" which was danced at the recent Sharpes Assembly weekend. Patrick Harrington videographed the dance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPWQQR80UJQ&feature=youtu.be

Again, we will continue to dance at 308 W. University for the month of November. Starting December 1 we will be dancing at United Church of Gainesville. There have been alot of issues surrounding the parking at 308 W. University. For sure you can park at the Segal building without fear of tow or costs (yes, this is the opposite of the way it used to be). Parking against the outside wall at 308 is now iffy; and parking underneath may be open but there may be a charge.

Check out other local English country Dance events at the end of this email. Randy and I usually attend these events; we will bring passengers if you are interested. Please note the one at Veronica Lane's house on November 25. If you plan to go to this either let her know or me and I will let her know.

Dances done last week were: (those starred were done so by dancers to do again) R indicates Repertiore dance.

The Ragg (skipping stars)

* Jack By the Hedge (LW, corners set, walk to center, spin to be back-to-back with corner, all spiral out)

* The Unknown Buccaneer (LW, Dr. Who Pirate Jig, back up with face-en-face, back up passing neighbor)

* Jack's Sparrow (4 Cpl; lines forward & back, 1st long corners change; second long corners)

* Belle of the Ball (LW belle and two men star)

* The Black Cat (LW, Spiral counter clockwise into center; fall back into corner's place) R

* Red House (LW, 1's in a double, fall back)

* Look Both Ways (LW Trip to Paris cross, turn by right half way; while the other couple set & turn single)

* Banish Misfortune (3 cpl cir, weaves and heys) R

Join us any (and every!!) Monday evening. Learn the interesting movements and patterns of English Country Dance set to beautiful live music by Hoggetowne Fancy. We are very fortunate to have musicians who play for us. Not very many weekly dance groups can enjoy dancing to live music.

Everyone is welcome. All dances are taught, walked through, and called. No experience, partner, or special dress is necessary. Randy Thorp is the caller. His aim is for everyone to have fun. He has dancers mark on a chart which dances they enjoy, so that he can plan each dance week with a program that our group will enjoy.

Do you have a parent who might enjoy watching the dancers and listening to the music? Bring them for free.

308 W. University Avenue, Upstairs

Cost $5 + donation for the musicians (their only compensation)

Article: The Curious Case of the Upside Down Chumush

In addition to a prayer book, in synagogue, we also use a chumash, which contains the torah (five books of Moses) and the haftorah (some of the prophets and writings).

When you place a chumash on the shelf, you should always place the chumash right side up, because the chumash contains the written name of god.

At synagogue Saturday, I said to the Hillel rabbi, "look, I have a collector's edition," and showed her my chumash. Then I opened up the cover, and the contents of the book were upside down.

She said that would be a good topic for a sermon, what is more important, appearances or reality.

I am one of those people that turn the chumushes right side up, but I never looked inside before doing so.

It is Shabbat, so we cannot put a label on the outside of the chumush.

Can we expect people to look inside a chumush before turning it over?

If we place this chumush upside down, someone may come turn it over without looking inside.

If we place this chumush right side up, the name of god is upside down.

How should we place this chumush?

English Country Dancing Pirates

Dear Dancers,

This Monday at Gainesville ECD, we're going to dance Sharon Green's "The Unknown Buccaneer," which is set to Martha Stokely's tune "The Dr. Who Pirate Jig." Intrigued? Come dance with us.

Last Monday "Jack by the Hedge" was a huge hit! So we will repeat it again this week. It's one of those wonderful dances which matches the music so well.

Here is a link for some English dance terms:

http://cdny.org/page/ecd-figures

Dances done last week were: (those starred were done so by dancers to do again) R indicates Repertiore dance.

Juice of Barley (LW clap then circle)

* The Flying Sorceress (LW, waltz-time gypsy dance!)

* The Black Cat (LW, Spiral counter clockwise into center; fall back into corner's place) R

* Jack By the Hedge (LW, corners set, walk to center, spin to be back-to-back with corner, all spiral out)

* Leah's Waltz (3 cpl, 1st cpl lead down, set R & L, lead back up & cast)

* Look Both Ways (LW Trip to Paris cross, turn by right half way; while the other couple set & turn single)

* Foxfire (LW, Circle ½ left, cast one place left; women change, men change)

* Mary K (LW, Petit Fours)

* Elizabeth (LW waltz; open ladies chain)

Join us any (and every!!) Monday evening. Learn the interesting movements and patterns of English Country Dance set to beautiful live music by Hoggetowne Fancy.
