Democratic Party State Conference in Orlando

I am not affiliated with a particular party. Am including this note, because it is relevant to Florida and therefore Gainesville. I am happy to include other party notes as well.

My personal interest is in preserving and restoring Florida's natural habitats and wildlife.

From: Karen Thurman, Florida Democratic Party grassroots@fladems.com
Subject: Powerful words

Florida Democrats Florida Democrats
  Dear Andrew,

Last weekend, we had an amazing state conference in Orlando. I wish you could have been there. Since I know many of you could not make it, I did want to share a highlight of CFO Alex Sink's powerful words that captured the energy of the conference so well.

Watch the video and share it with your friends and neighbors.

http://www.fladems.com/alexatconference

I know that Alex Sink in the Governor's office will restore the dream that led so many to move to this state.

Listening to her speak, talking to our grassroots leaders, and seeing the enthusiasm and desire they have to change Florida in 2010 made me more confident in what I already know:

We stand ready to take back our state.

For the first time in almost 140 years, every single statewide office is on the ballot and not a single one is an incumbent running for re-election. Both as Democrats and as Floridians, we are fighting to seize our historic opportunity - by not only electing Alex Sink as our next Governor - but by electing a strong Democrat to the U.S. Senate, and electing more Democrats to Congress, the Cabinet, and our State Legislature.

Just like the hundreds of thousands of volunteers who worked tirelessly to deliver Florida for Barack Obama, we must commit ourselves to be the change that we want for Florida.

This election cycle, it's up to us whether or not Florida continues to see high unemployment numbers and face stagnation.

You have already done so much to help us build the momentum we need to bring change to Florida in 2010, but there is still so much work to be done.

Frankly, the future of our state rests in the hands of each of us. With your help, we will change Florida and help Alex Sink win this historic election.

Thank you for everything you've done to get us here.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Karen L. Thurman
Chair, Florida Democratic Party

Very sad news

Hello Gainesville Swing Dancers,

Our dear friend Marrie Robinson tragically passed away last week.

Marrie was a sweet, good-hearted and emotionally generous person.

She enriched the dance community by her welcoming presence, beautiful example and thorough knowledge.

When Marrie came to my classes, she participated enthusiastically. Even though she was ten times the dancer I will ever be, she
graciously pretended to learn. After class, she always had some gem to share with me, which I continue to pass on to you. This is
one way she continues to be with us.

May Richard's words below give you comfort.

Knowing Marrie was a blessing,
Andy

Greetings Dancers,

It is with sad heart that I send you this letter. Our fellow dancer, my first dance class assistant, and Gainesville's Dancing
Queen-"Queen of Hustle"-Marrie Robinson-died a couple of days ago.

She loved dancing and was a spectacular dancer. She touched and inspired us in many ways. She was kind, loving, and generous with
her time and knowledge.

She is survived by her two daughters-Mishani and Kachiri. If you are of faith-please say a little prayer that God will comfort her
and that he will ease the sorrow of her two beautiful daughters. Or, the next time you hear the song "Dancing Queen"-remember Marrie
Robinson. I miss her dearly!

Love and Peace,

Richard Nalli, Jr.

mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."

Article: The End and the Beginning

Each week in synagogue we read a portion of the Torah (the five
books of Moses). The torah is a scroll of parchment on two handles.
At the beginning of the year, the torah scroll is all on the left
and at the end of the year it is all on the right.

After reading the torah a person is called up to lift the torah.
When the scroll is all on one side it is heavy and awkward to lift.
My Dad used to joke that we had the changeover of the year covered,
because he is left handed and I am right handed.

It is our tradition to go to synagogue on the anniversary of a
family members death, called a Yahrzeit, and say the Kaddish,
which is a blessing sanctifying the holy one. We go three times,
on the evening before, the following morning and late afternoon.

Last week I got up early to go to synagogue to say Kaddish for
my Dad on his Yahrzeit. At synagogue we read Beresheit, In The
Beginning, which is the start of the torah. It had not occurred
to me before that my father had passed away between our reading
the end of the Torah and the beginning of the Torah.

This was my Dad's sixth yahrzeit. Sometimes we only see things
when we are ready. Dancing is like that.

Music and Community News

From: M...

Hello Everyone,

Sorry to bug you but I hope you think this is a worthy cause.

As you may know, WUFT changed its music/news format to just "talk" this past August. I'm still dismayed by the fact that, since,
there is no classic music aired or available in our area. So, we lost that, most of the programming that came with it, and the
opportunity to listen and learn about the music from other cultures. If you were a listener of WUFT music and are looking for a way
to help reinstate this cultural asset, here are some things you might consider doing and/or contact Sue Yelton (below) for
additional information.

I plan to go to the rally announced below but promised not to sing. Don't want to risk being arrested for disorderly conduct. ;)

Best to you,

Meee...

----- Original Message -----
From: Sue Yelton sueyelton@yahoo.com

We had an excellent turnout with good food, good company, and good talk at last night's community meeting. Many of you who could
not attend have asked me to give you an update. Soon we'll have much of the information that I shared at the meeting posted on the
website -- my research in recent weeks has uncovered a lot of very interesting information! But for now, I need to share the
following messages:

The most important message I can give you is that there is plenty of reason for hope -- most definitely! If we can keep our
community support for music strong and active, I believe we can succeed. I think it's best to expand upon the reasons for this hope
on the website, where our webmaster will soon be posting much of the information that I presented at last night's meeting.

Our petition total, as of yesterday, including both online and paper petitions, is 1,788 signatures! And that, I assure you, will
continue to rise.

Among the actions, discussed last night, that we can all take this month to contribute to our chances of success are:

~Send more emails stating your concerns to Dean Wright at jwright@jou.ufl.edu with cc to the following: WUFT-FM at radio@wuft.org,
the Gainesville Sun at voice@gvillesun.com, the Alligator at aconti@alligator..org, and me, for accountibility, at
sueyelton@yahoo.com.

~Come to the rally! This event will take place in front of Weimer Hall (the Journalism building at UF) during Homecoming weekend on
Friday, October 16th between 4:45 and 6 pm. If possible, bring friends and carpool! We will have a map showing the location of
Weimer Hall on the website.

Parking will be easy -- there are no classes on Homecoming Day -- and a parking map will be on the website.

We have extra signs for people to use at the rally, but it's not necessary for everyone to be holding one -- there will be plenty of
sign-holders. Signs are to be positive, and we will be silent and non-confrontational. Just please come and enjoy the music.

Please, if possible, RSVP if you will be attending the rally at sueyelton@yahoo.com We need a show of strength and numbers this
time! If it looks like we'll have enough people, I'll alert TV20 as well as the press. If it looks as though we won't have enough
people, we will have to call the rally off.

SOS: Please let me know ASAP if you, or someone you know, might be able to provide live music for us! (We weren't able to have the
UF Jazz Band, as planned, because of permit difficulties having to do with their electric instruments.) Any genre of music is great,
as long as it's something that was on Classic 89 and is now missing from the analog broadcast.

~UNpledge Update: WUFT-FM's fall pledge drive begins on October 27th, ending on November 6th. To unpledge is to phone the station,
state the amount that you would normally have pledged, and explain that you will not send this money until they restore the music to
the analog station. When you phone to unpledge, please repeat your statement in emails to the above-mentioned addresses, including
one to me for record-keeping purposes. The UNpledge drive will be far more effective this way, because there may not be any record
of your unpledges otherwise!

~We are considering taking out a full-page ad in the Gainesville Sun. We could state our concerns and our hopes, and include facts
that support our views. The cost of this would be around $1,300. If 52 people were to contribute $25 each (from their pledge
refunds or unpledges), we would reach that sum. Each donor's name would be printed in acknowledgment. We could also ask those
underwriters who previously supported the music to help with this expense. If you would be willing to contribute to a fund to buy
this ad, please let me know.

Thank you all for your patience, and for your support. With your help, I believe we can succeed, so that North Florida may once
again benefit from great music on our analog airwaves!

Article: Learn from Different Teachers

When I go to South Florida I like to take a Hustle class from
Billy and Katie who are two of the most accomplished dancers
in the world.

Last month I was disappointed that they were not there. Their
class was being taught by a woman from their advanced session.
Had I known in advance, I would have been tempted not to go.

She exceeded my expectations and the class was excellent.

She covered the same material Katie covers, but she had her own
insights and I got a bunch of new things I could use right away.
Some were:

1. On the and-one back break, she said the front, upper
part of the woman's leg is the pretty part, and the
best way to show it during the break is to turn the hip
slightly out to show the leg on an angle to the side.

2. The two step is usually the woman's pretty step,
because she takes a full step forward. This is
in the woman's left half turn.

3. In the same woman's left half turn, she said to
shorten up the three, so it would be quicker,
and then the woman would have more time to do
her and-one with style.

4. On the woman's left one-and-a-half turn, she said
to turn in place and not travel, making the turn
easier, more controlled, faster and prettier.

5. She said one of the things that made Billy a
champion was he did his breaks, he straightened
his legs.

While I am sure Katie knows all those things, I happened
to get them from this teacher. Take classes from different
people to get new insights.

Article: Venus Not Mercury Over Paynes Prairie

This morning within an hour before sunrise, Venus, Mercury
and Saturn rose over Paynes Prairie.

I have not yet knowingly seen Mercury and hoped this would
be a chance.

The timing seemed right, but fog obscured the horizon and
only Venus was visible in the eastern sky.

Mars was overhead and a nearly full moon was in the west.

I battled mosquitoes in the dark and was glad I was alone.

With light came others. The mosquitos retreated.

News from Dance Alive National Ballet

From: Judy Skinner dalive@bellsouth.net

BACK STAGE
OCTOBER 2009

After 17 years ... He's Back!

The ultimate DRACULA! Kim Tuttle's amazing full-length ballet based on the Bram Stoker story of the vampire called Dracula will
return to the Phillips Center October 30th at 7 PM.

"An exciting combination of dance, music, narration, and setting creates a vivid, multi-sensory experience.

This is an intensely dramatic work with Dracula, as portrayed by Andre Valladon, a vibrant, sensual, hypnotic, sometimes
animal-like, character with total control over his environment. Michele Incollingo reprises her role as 'Lucy'; even more brilliant
than in 1992! Actor, dancer, choreographer Ric Rose returns as the narrator with Isabel Garcia-Rose once again dancing the role of
'Mina'. DANB principal dancers Carla Amancio and Beth Ann Maslinoff are featured as Dracula's vampire brides with Tak Kwan Chu Dr.
John Seward. New DANB principals Rostislav Dzabraev, Eivar Martinez, Reka Gyulai, Laura Clark, Heather Martinez and Elitsa Zafirova
will make their debut with DANB in this performance. You are in for a real treat! This is an amazing group of dancers!

DRACULA is a huge production with over thirty dancers taking the stage. It is also a massive undertaking with numerous costumes
required - and then there is the set! This 2009 production features the spectacular sets designed by brilliant visual artist
Margaret Ross Tolbert. Originally constructed by Jim Kasserman and artist Paul Costanza, Ms. Tolbert's work has been brought to
life by artist Patrick Giles.

If you like a good story - if you enjoy gorgeous bodies in motion - if you like a variety of music - if you want an amazing
entertaining evening ... DON'T MISS DRACULA!

Tickets from $15 to $35 at the Phillips Center or any Ticketmaster Outlet.

HALLOWEEN COSTUME BALL

Friday, October 30th 9 PM
On-Stage at Dracula's Castle

"I truly desire you to attend my Halloween Costume Ball following my October 30th performance .... on stage in my Transylvanian
castle starting at 9 PM.

I will have a personal fiend, I wouldn't call him a friend, playing ghoulish music for the pleasure of your dancing and there will
be delightfully decadent "finger" foods, "Bloody" Mary's and other demonic delights to feed your cravings.

Do NOT dare to disappoint me!"
Count Dracula

Anyone who has attended a Dance Alive event KNOWS they give a great party! Don't miss this one. It promises to be frighteningly
fun!
Best costume wins a mysteriously wonderful prize.
Tickets $35.
Available at the Phillips Center Box Office or any Ticketmaster Outlet. For more information, call 352.371-2986

DRACUWEEN KID'S PARTY!

October 30th at 6 PM
Fackler Foyer East at the Phillips Center

Scary - Safe - Fun!
A great way for your children to trick and treat! Punch and cookies and costumes, oh my! What a way to celebrate the fun of
Halloween.

Dracula is looking for ghosts, goblins, pumpkins, fairy princesses, pirates, and super hero's ... not to mention the occasional
football player, cheerleader and ballerina!
Best costume wins a prize!

Phillips Center for the Performing Arts - Fackler Foyer East
$15 per person. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

TARGET TO THE RESCUE!

It wasn't looking good. Both the County and the State cut all funding for arts education programming. At risk, Dancin', a
residency program, and Discover Dance, a program that brings children and disabled or at-risk adults from Alachua and 13 surrounding
counties to professional dance productions during the school day. DANB received notice late in September that Target was awarding
DANB grants for educational programming. While not fully funding the program, the $5,500 grant will be a big help! Thanks to
Target, Discover Dance, a program that began in 1986, will continue.

Dance Alive National Ballet

DANB has just received notice that it has been awarded a $25,000 Culture Builds Florida's Future grant for "Mission Olympus". The
grant will help develop and enhance programs that augment and advance DANB and Art of the Olympians mission statements, reflect
Culture Builds Florida's Future, promote innovative artistic creativity and inform, inspire, educate and challenge audiences and
artists of all ages.

Gainesville audiences will see some of the results of "Mission Olympus" in the spring concert, Fused Tutu.

Bulgarian born Reka Gyulai makes her debut with DANB at the Villages in Lady Lake performing Ashton's La Fille Mal Gardee, Tuttle's
L'Amour and Skinner's Aleatorio. In Dracula, Ms. Gyulai portrays on of Dracula's vampire brides.eivar

Venezuelan born Eivar Martinez made his debut dancing Kim Tuttle's Sincerely at the Villages/Gainesville in September. He will
perform Tuttle's L'Amour and Skinner's Aleatorio at the Villages in Lady Lake before performing for Gainesville audiences as
Holmwood, Lucy's fiancee in Dracula. Mr. Martinez is an amazing partner; partnering Ms. Incollingo, Ms. Garcia-Rose and Ms. Amancio
for upcoming performances. Wonderful news for Mr.Martinez and DANB, his wife, ballerina Heather Martinez, and their son will
arrive soon in Gainesville! Ms. Martinez will debut as a gypsy in Dracula.

Did I mention that we have gorgeous dancers? Ms. Zafirova arrived in September and has been working learning much of DANB's
repertoire. She will make her Gainesville debut as a gypsy in Dracula. Elitsa Zafirova comes to DANB from Bulgaria. Ms. Zatirova
is a tall long legged nineteen year old who most recently performed with the Bulgarian National Ballet.

Another one of our gorgeous new dancers! Laura Clark, from Miami, comes to DANB from Ballet Gamonet. A professional ballet dancer
who wanted to continue her academic education, Gainesville, UF and Dance Alive National Ballet was the perfect answer! Ms. Clark
makes her debut as a gypsy in Dracula.

Russian born Rostislav Dzabraev opens the season dancing Gopak and La Fille Mal Gardee at the Villages in Lady Lake followed by a
performance as lawyer Jonathan Harker in Dracula. Mr. Rostislav will enter the USA Ballet Competition; coached by Andre Valladon.

Why Are Principal Dancers Suffering Multiple Personalities?

Principal Michele Incollingo isn't sure if she is the Sugar Plum Fairy, Dracula's Lucy, Cio Cio San from Madame Butterfly or the
siren in L'Amour! But then, principal dancer Andre Valladon doesn't know if he is the princely Cavalier in Nutcracker, the sensual
Count Dracula or the friendly tipsy guy in L'Amour! The company has been busy this past month rehearsing for THREE different
programs - Ballet Spectacular for tour, Dracula and Nutcracker! You can catch up with them on the following dates:

* 10/24 Ballet Spectacular at the Villages in Lady Lake
* 10/30 Dracula in Gainesville
* 11/15 Nutcracker in Starke
* 12/4 Nutcracker in Flagler Beach
* 12/6 Nutcracker at the Villages in Lady Lake
* 12/11 Nutcracker in Palatka
* 12/12 Nutcracker in Madison, FL
* 12/17-20 Nutcracker in Gainesville

Dance Alive National Ballet is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 by the National Endowment for the Arts,
a federal agency in partnership with the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts
and Culture. Dance Alive National Ballet is sponsored in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes

Development Council.
