Swing and Sway holds an evening dance at the Senior Center on Friday as well.

This weekend is the fifth Sunday of the month and so there is an Advanced Contra Dance at the Boltin Center at 4.

Sunday evening, UF Argentine Tango Club is hosting a Milonga at Corry Village, which is open to the public.

Also Sunday, from 7 to 10, Nick and the Swingtastics return to Loosey's. If you missed their first showing, come out for this one for a fun time with classic swing.

Next week on Tuesday, Richard is teaching beginning and intermediate Lindy Hop, the original swing dance. If you have been doing East Coast or West Coast Swing, you have a head start. This is a chance for you to get ready for the UF Swing Club's yearly Lindy Exchange coming up in the middle of October.

Next week on Thursday, Bob Rogers is bringing back his 6-Count Latin Hustle class.

For details and other dancing, see the calendar.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Big Variety of Dancing this Weekend, Swing, Contra, Tango, Vintage Waltz

Gainesville Ocala Swing and Social Dance Newsletter 2013-09-20

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

Last Sunday, a bunch of people made it out to Swingtastics at Loosey's for a fun night of good music and dance. Keep your eyes open for the next one.

Two weekends ago was River City Swing in Jacksonville. This was an excellent event. Plan to go next year.

This weekend, you can do four different dances, all within about a mile of each other.

Friday night, UF Swing Club holds their weekly free lesson and dance at the Unified Training Center.

Saturday night, after the game, you have your choice of an elegant Tango Y Tea with David and Thuy or an exuberant Contra Dance at the Boltin Center.

Sunday morning, come out for the monthly Vintage Waltz Brunch at The Movement.

For details, see the calendar.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Good News in Gators Loss to Miami

You did not think we were going to win them all, did you?

This is the kind of loss that can do our team a lot of good. In fact, we could not have asked for a better loss. Sure, we hate to lose to Miami, but the game has no bearing on the SEC race. We still determine our own outcome.

Losing this game, gives us a better chance to win the big games we face in the SEC, because the players and coaches will learn a lot about what to do to get better.

What we need to do better is have a downfield passing game, duh. We have a great defense. We have great special teams. We have a strong running game. If we can throw the ball down the field, opponents are going to have a lot of trouble.

You learn more in a loss than you do in a win.

During the Gators win over Toledo, in my section of the stands, there was constant moaning over the Gators passing game. All we got were tentative plays around the line of scrimmage.

"Throw the ball down the field," was the cry.

The Gator passing game played afraid all last year and looked the same way against Toledo. For the most part, they looked afraid against Miami. It is hard to watch a team that is afraid.

But, with only a few minutes to play, they took the ball the length of the field in about a minute to score a touchdown we had to have, with big throws by Driskel and receptions by Dunbar and Patton.

If we were able to win this game by plodding like usual, the players would never have gotten a chance to open up. You have to let the players open up to loosen up.

Those turnovers were not Driskel's fault. They were the coaches fault. First, you have to put your quarterback in circumstances to gain the experience he needs to perform under pressure. Second, even with enough experience, you have to give your quarterback a chance to get loose.

Loosening up your players is the same with every sport. When I played in a volleyball tournament. Right from the beginning, I told my partner to serve hard. It does not matter if they go in. We need to be loose at the end of the day for the playoffs, so we have to get the mistakes out of our system early. If you start off being tentative, you never get loose. If you start off serving hard, by the end of the day, you get in a zone and everything goes in.

That is how athletics work. If you play afraid to make mistakes, you get tight and make crucial mistakes when the pressure is greatest. If you get loose early, you get into a zone and can do amazing things.

Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke's junior years were full of promise and errors. The FSU coaches gave their stars a chance to grow from mistakes, which paid off. They were rewarded with senior years that were Heisman trophy, national championship seasons. Driskel should have been, but was not given that chance last year, nor in the Toledo game, or even the Miami game, until the end. Driskel looks like a pro quarterback. He just more experience with throwing the ball under pressure.

Some people say the Gators do not have the playmakers to go downfield. I do not believe that. Our guys were awesome players in high school. They are tremendous athletes. We saw that at the end of this Miami game.

Yes, they maybe do not do all the things they are supposed to do yet, but they for sure can run and catch. Did you see the catch Solomon Patton made in the first half. That was incredible. I bet we have a few other guys that can make some pretty good catches too.

Do not worry about the Gators. There were promising signs. If the Gators open up the passing game, I think we are going to beat Alabama.

English Country Dancing Get ready for Fandango

This week we will be doing 6 dances from the Fandango program which will happen in Atlanta at the end of the month.  Many of our dancers are going--and everyone will enjoy the variety.

And that includes everyone's favorite, Fandango!  It's a wonderful 3 couple dance where you learn to dance to the music.  There are slow turns and fast slipping circles with hoots and hollers (this is the second Monday with the NAMI meeting next door so we have to refrain from excess noise).  You can watch it here from Fandango last year:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNYZ8qTSAXw&feature=plcp

Another dance which we will do is the three couple, Our Brief Encounter.  You can see in the first half of the video (filming starts in the middle of the dance.  The dance begins again at :30).
https://vimeo.com/18479526

If you are thinking about going to Fandango, spots are filling up quickly--almost full.  And if you are thinking about going to Sebring, now is the time to send in your registration.  Shortly, rooms will be given back to the motel and sign-ups will still be available if rooms are available.

I know what you are thinking.  I dance English every week--that's enough.  Why do I want to spend all that money and all weekend do to more?  That's what we thought when we started dancing and everyone talked about weekends.  We thought they were crazy--we'd never do that!  And once we went we understood why.  First, your dancing reaches a new level.  You do a wide variety of dances and it's like learning anything--the more you do it the better you become.  And you can immerse yourself in lovely music and movement and smiling faces.  Meet others.  Explore a new city.  Stay in a turn of the century lodge.  Dance in a gorgeous ballroom.  Play dress up.

Remember both singles and couples are welcome.  No one has to have a partner (just like on Monday's).  And with everyone staying at the lodge and there being breakfast and lunch together, it's an easy way to socialize--or you can always go to your room to relax for the next session.  You get alot for your money--music, dancing, lodging, food.  There is also an outdoor swimming pool.

Dances done last week were: (R means repertoire--dances we pull from for demonstrations)

Dance in the Village (LW, 2nd crnrs right hand turn ½, then dance around partners to home)

Horseplay (LW Line of 4 fall back, come forward, gypsy your end)

Longevity (LW, waltz-time, 2 cousins siding: 3 steps to meet partner left shoulder, 3 steps to pivot to right shoulder, 6 steps to gypsy ¾ round)

After Dinner Maggot (Triple Mnr, 1st lady, followed by partner, cast to 2nd for single file cirle with the three's)

Madeira Coastline (LW, to Ashokan Farewell)

Midwinter Maggot (LW, single file circle left halfway, turn left, single file circle right halfway, turn right)

Joseph's Idyll (LW, Cross-handed dance with promenade, lady turning right under mans left hand)

Future Planning  Now is the time to put these dates on your calendar:

September 14, St. Cloud Regional dance with 4 callers, 2 - 5 pm.

September, 27 - 29 Fandango in Atlanta!  There will be lots of us going.

October 18 - 20,
Sharpes Assembly, Sebring Florida.  Stay and dance at the Historical Kenilworth Lodge.  There will be even more of us going.

For more information about these and other events see Don Pauley's website:  http://dancefl.us/ecd/index.php

If you'd like to review some of the vocabulary, here is a link for some English dance terms: Join us any (and every!!) Monday evening. Learn the interesting movements and patterns of English Country Dance set to beautiful live music by Hoggetowne Fancy. We are very fortunate to have musicians who play for us. Not very many weekly dance groups can enjoy dancing to live music. If you choose to watch instead of dance please feel free to let people know. We want you to be comfortable to do whatever you choose. But people will ask you so that everyone feels included and not left out.

Everyone is welcome. All dances are taught, walked through, and called. No experience, partner, or special dress is necessary. Randy Thorp is the caller. His aim is for everyone to have fun. He has dancers mark on a chart which dances they enjoy, so that he can plan each dance week with a program that our group will enjoy. Newcomers are welcome---come at 6:45 for the lesson.

Do you have a parent who might enjoy watching the dancers and listening to the music? Bring them for free.

At United Church of Gainesville (UCG)

Cost $5 (after February for UCG dancers)+ donation for the musicians (their only compensation)
