Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

If you are an experienced dancer, we could use some extra leaders for Swing 101, so let me know if you want to help out (you come for free).

Beginning to intermediate Israeli Dancing with Andy is on Monday nights at B'nai Israel, 3830 NW 16 Blvd, from 7 to 8:30 or so, with partner dances at the end of the evening. If you are in Israeli 101, you can come on Mondays for free.

Lots of other dancing tonight, Thursday, as well, with Ballroom Crash Course with Bob Rogers, Ballroom Quick Step with Ray and Eileen, beginning East Coast Swing with Richard and Argentine Tango with the UF club.

Tomorrow, Friday, UF Swing Club is in session.

Saturday night is the Stephen White Coast Swing Workshop and Dance Party. These are always a good time and Stephen is a terrific host, dancing with all the ladies (and any guys that want).

Sunday Swing and Sway has an afternoon Tea Dance at the Senior Center.

The monthly afternoon Contra Dance is this Sunday. Believe there will be a beginning and advanced Waltz lessons before the dance starting at 3:30.

    Partying in Gainesville folkdance

    Good morning folks,

Wanted to copy to you what I just sent to Carolyn for the FFDC newsletter for next month.

We've had our moments last the last few months....& look forward to the 2013 parties....

Anyway, see ya this Friday the 25th...remember, we're every other week in February....

    Later...j
(by the way, the photos I refer to were sent to ya'll at the time they were taken....)....

    Folkdancers of Gainesville united!

When Gainesville folkdancers dance & party, they aren't kidding around. It's a wonderful experience. At the end of 2012, in November, we all began by dancing around the tables, chairs & people trying to digest their meal at the local Greek restaurant, Sandy's. Of course the local Greek group, Embros led by this father & daughter team of Leo & Eleni Polopolus gave us the great sounds of his clarinet & her soprano voice. I'm always amazed by electronic violin of Anne & now David on bouzouki. They're a very unique sound so come join us next time (every 3 months or so). Check them out online at http://www.embrosorchestra.com/bios.html

Anyway, sitting down for some fresh made moussaka & pastitsio doesn't put a damper on our enthusiasm. Those participating, going around the table were Linda, Mireille, Julieta, John, Juanita, Nancy, Arlene & of course me….who took the picture?....Jualene!

So we move on to Dec 31,2012 with Jualene bringing us over to her magnificent home for the all nighter (until 12:15 actually) of food, fun, music, dancing, lots of chit-chat & some serious talk about stuff! We begin that one fairly early & with the singing & toasting to Auld Lang Syne at midnight we smilingly welcome in the New Year. What more can you ask? Pictured in the group are Juanita & husband, Linda, Arlene, Diane & Max, Mireille, Nancy, Jan, June, Margaret. Down on the floor are me, Jualene, Leslie, Barbara & Julieta. Those not quite making it to the midnight hour photo were John, Joyce D, Ruth, Joyce S & Grace.

See you all at the Bata-Ercument President's Weekend camp….a bunch of us from Gainesville are looking forward to the 3 nights & days of folkdance interaction.

Best Time to Learn a New Dance is With Others, Israeli Dancing 101 and Swing 101 this Thursday

Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dance Newsletter 2013-01-21

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

The best time to start a new dance is with others starting at the same time. You have two new beginner classes starting this week, Israeli Folk Dancing 101 and Swing Dancing 101 on Thursday night at Gainesville High School.

Sign up for both these classes and also beginning Ballroom, Latin and Line dancing at the Senior Center via Santa Fe College Community Education.
    www.sfcollege.edu/cied/communityed

Tonight Monday is English Country and Israeli Dancing. Israeli Dancing is at B'nai Israel 3830 NW 16 Blvd, around back to the right from 7 to 8:30.

This Friday International Folk Dancing meets 8 to 11 pm.

For more details and other classes see the dance calendar.

The dancing we do is reminiscent, but not the same as the people that inspired our version. See Yemenite dancing here. At about 5 minutes, is the same tune as Geulim, music we have a dance to.

    Intriguing English Dances at UCG

    Dear Dancers,

We will be repeating Daybreak to the Asian tune, "Hunan Hornpipe" by Jonathan Jensen and a waltz circle dance, among others. Hornpipes, and jigs, and waltzes, oh my! A triple minor; a dance written by Jim Kitch (well-known for his contra's). And who wouldn't want to dance "The Black Nag" (watch us performing it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrgbWlaNkgI), or "Whirligig", or "Midwinter Maggot".

Would you like to do a performance? Sign up for Viva Europe on March 23--it's sponsored by UF at the downtown plaza and it's nice to have English dancers as part of this event.

We've been having a wonderfully eclectic group of dancers! Thanks to our core dancers who help the new comers along! And if you are a newer dancer, keep coming back--once the vocabulary becomes more familiar so will the moves. We repeat some dances from the week before, so there were be ones that you are familiar with.

Want to do more English dancing? Opportunities are coming up. There is a Friday evening English dance each week in Jacksonville and a 2nd Saturday dance each month in St. Cloud. Sign up now for the Nashville Playford Ball, March 22 - 24, where David Millstone will be calling to the music of Foxfire (Karen Axelrod & Daron Douglas). There will be the Mayfair Ball in St. Cloud in May--an afternoon dance, and an evening ball.
Dances done January 7 were: (those starred were done so by dancers to do again) R indicates Repertiore dance.

Highland Lilt (LW, 1's lead down, spearate, go around next couple, meet, lead back to home)

Rakes of Rochester (LW, 1's chasse down the center, open out, chasse back up)

    * Jack By the Hedge (LW, corners set, walk to center, spin to be back-to-back with corner, all spiral out)

    * Nightwatch (LW, Watlz, Chevron with partners follow partner back into the set)

    * Apollo's Hunt (LW, Mirror gypsy your neighbor, and again on the other side of the set)

Here is a link for some English dance terms:

    http://cdny.org/page/ecd-figures

Join us any (and every!!) Monday evening. Learn the interesting movements and patterns of English Country Dance set to beautiful live music by Hoggetowne Fancy. We are very fortunate to have musicians who play for us. Not very many weekly dance groups can enjoy dancing to live music.

Everyone is welcome. All dances are taught, walked through, and called. No experience, partner, or special dress is necessary. Randy Thorp is the caller. His aim is for everyone to have fun. He has dancers mark on a chart which dances they enjoy, so that he can plan each dance week with a program that our group will enjoy. Newcomers are welcome---come at 6:45 for the lesson.

Do you have a parent who might enjoy watching the dancers and listening to the music? Bring them for free.

At United Church of Gainesville (UCG)

    1624 Northwest 5th Avenue

If you go north on 13th Street from University Avenue, take a left on (west) 5th Avenue. After you pass 15th Street you will see a parking lot on your right, to the east of the buildings (before the church). We will be dancing in the Fellowship Hall. If you walk out of the parking lot, straight ahead, you will go to the correct room. Look for the Yellow and Red Signs. If you're coming from the west, take a left on 17th Street and the a right on 5th Avenue. The church buildings will be on your left--the parking lot will be just past them.

Cost $5 + donation for the musicians (their only compensation)
