091001 Israeli Dancing, Greek Dance, Moon, Mercury, Chutzpah

Hello Gainesville Area Israeli Dancers and Friends,

Greek dance celebration on Friday October 9.

Chagigah is October 16 to 19 in Wisconsin. Still time to go.
http://osrui.urjcamps.org/yearround/programs/chagigah/

I have discovered the secret to an easy fast. After going to
someone's house for the pre-Yom Kippur, go home and eat two
hard boiled eggs. Two days later and I am still full.

Howard Cohen, former UF professor of Astronomy explained why
the half-moon was in such an unusually deep blue sky last week.
On the Autumnal equinox the half-moon is at its lowest position
in the sky at sunset. This time of the year is also the best
time to view Mercury in the morning. A half hour before sunset
on October 6, Mercury is at its maximum elongation from the sun
and near to its highest point above the horizon. Try the Paynes
Prairie overlook off 441 for a clear view of the eastern horizon
and look for the brightest object before the sun rises.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Article: Chutzpah

This was sent to me. I do not know the author.

Chutzpah is a Yiddish word meaning gall, brazen nerve, effrontery, sheer
guts plus arrogance; it's Yiddish and, as Leo Rosten writes, "no other word,
and no other language," can do it justice. This example is better than 1,000
words . .

THE ESSENCE OF CHUTZPAH

A little old lady sold pretzels on a street corner for 25 cents each. Every
day a young man would leave his office building at lunch time, and as he
passed the pretzel stand, he would leave her a quarter, but never take a
pretzel.

And this went on for more then 3 years. The two of them never spoke. One
day, as the young man passed the old lady's stand and left his quarter as
usual, the pretzel lady spoke to him.

"Sir, thank you for your business. You are a good customer, but I have to
tell you that the pretzel price has gone up to 35 cents."

090927 Swing Dance Party, Change

Hello Gainesville Area Dancers and Friends,

Yom Kippur starts Sunday night, so I will not be at dancing.
(If you want to know what we do on Yom Kippur, see the article.)

Richard will run a casual dance party. He will be playing music
suitable for all types of Swing and some other social dances.
He will cater to the people there.

He may do a short lesson of East Coast Swing moves first,
if you want.

Get in some practice and put what you are learning into use.
Come out Sunday night for fun dancing.

Week 3 of 3 for beginning clogging is this week.
See below for more info.

Astronaut Captain Winston Scott gave a terrifically entertaining
presentation on his space missions at the Year of Astronomy event
this Friday. He did a slide show of his second mission, 16 days
on the space shuttle. He introduced the crew. Captain Scott was
African American, his mission space walk partner was from Japan.
The shuttle arm operator was a woman from India and another crew
member was the first Russian cosmonaut on the space shuttle.
Chokes you up a little if you think about it. We also got to
look thru a number of telescopes at the moon and jupiter.

My nephew Josh and I went to the synagogue at the end of Shabbat tonight.
There is only about a dozen of us there on Saturday evenings, so it is fun
having Josh along. We always give him something important to do, so we get
to relive our experiencing things for the first time. We finished reading
the torah this week. The commentary said, "Next week we start reading the
torah over again from the beginning. We find new insights, not because the
torah has changed, but because we have". I like that.

A healthy and speedy recovery for Tim Tebow.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Article: Change

When I was in eighth grade the best basketball player around
was a little skinny kid. His dad was a coach and started him
young. He could dribble great, but because he was too little
to shoot properly, he used two hands to throw the ball at the
basket. He had practiced this strange way of shooting a lot
and had gotten relatively good at it so he could score more
than everyone else. None of the rest of us even bothered to
shoot outside, since we only just started playing basketball.

When we got to high school, we got bigger and stronger and we
learned to shoot with proper form and became good shooters.

The kid learned too, but he was not able to correct his shot
from the bad form he had spent so many years perfecting. He
was an excellent ball handler, had a good high school and
college career and coaches college today, but his shot was
always a weakness which he never fixed.

People have criticized Tim Tebow's throwing motion since he
got to Gainesville. The Gator's got a new quarterback coach,
who came here in large part to help Tebow correct his throwing
motion. In the game last week, the announcers commented on this
and showed Tebow throwing a pass in 2007 and again this year.
They pointed out that his motion was exactly the same. They
said, the coach could have him successfully alter his footwork,
but it was hard to get someone to change the way they throw the ball.

If you have some habits that are hard to break, take it easy on
yourself. You are in good company.

From the Israeli Dancing newsletter.

Article: Yom Kippur

Israeli Dancing was specifically started in Israel as a means
of cultural expression.

Regardless of whether you are Jewish or not, I think you will
find Israeli Dancing more meaningful and enjoyable if you
absorb some of the culture along with the steps. For that
reason, in this newsletter and classes I try to expose you
to the culture in different ways, often without explanation.

Last week I wished you a Shana Tova (happy new year), since
we are in the time of the Jewish New Year. This week I wished
you a meaningful fast, because beginning Sunday night is the
holiest day of the Jewish year Yom Kippur, on which we fast
for 26 hours.

The trick to having a meaningful fast is to avoid refined
carbohydrates at the afternoon meal before Yom Kippur starts.
Eat only protein and other food that takes a long time to digest.
Otherwise you will have a headache and will not be able
to think about anything else.

The next morning services start around 9 am. I like to walk to
services, which is what you are supposed to do. At 11:30 is Yizkor,
which means remember. At Yizkor we remember those who have passed away.
Many people who's parents are still living, leave the synagogue during
Yizkor, which I used to do up to five years ago.

After Yizkor many people leave before my favorite service,
the Service of the Kohain Gadol, the high priest.
We read about how this holiest service of the year was performed
in the Temple in Jerusalem and the awesome moment when the Kohain
Gadol pronounces the four-letter name of God and all the people
fall on their faces. My grandfather and father were Kohanim.
When my dad was around, we both got a kick out of an unspoken
sense that we were reading about a relative.

My favorite time on Yom Kippur is after the morning services,
which end around 2:30 pm and before the evening services
which start around 5 pm. Most people go home in between, but we
have a remnant of the faithful that hang around the synagogue.

In ancient times, during the break the single people would go
out to a field and have a big singles party, so I have read.
Any of you who are familiar with Jdate know nothing much has
changed. Jews are tireless matchmakers. The one sure way to
heaven is to make three matches (which I believe I have done).
In Jewish tradition God created the universe in six days.
What has he been doing since? Trying, with limited success,
to make matches.

The concluding service of Yom Kippur is called Neilah, which
means closing the gate. We have been fasting for 25 hours.
The ark holding the Torah is kept open, so we stand throughout
the service. Neilah is the longest service of the year, wouldn't
you know it. At the end of Neilah, everyone with a shofar comes
up to the bimah and blows theirs. This is something to hear.

Technically we can now eat, but to separate the holy day of Yom
Kippur from the ordinary day that is now starting, we do the
ceremony of Havdalah (separation).

After Havdalah, to get the new year off to a good start, we then
do the evening service for the new day. Our cantor pronounces every
word, very fast, and so this is the shortest service of the year,
but it does not matter because we are no longer hungry.

After we go to my sister's with family and friends to break the
fast with a light, dairy meal.

Now that our souls are cleansed, we are ready to start fresh and
dance unencumbered by our past.

From: University of Florida Boating and Waterway Management Program
florida@genconsumers.net

We need your help to estimate the economic benefits from recreational saltwater fishing, diving, and related activities in Southwest
Florida. Why? Recent budget shortfalls threaten many services provided by state and local governments. We want future funding
decisions to consider the benefits that are generated by boating related activities.

You can help us by answering a few questions online at:

You are one of a limited number of people we are asking to participate. Therefore, it is very important that we receive your answers

090923 Israeli Dancing, the Moon, Change, Yom Kippur

Hello Gainesville Area Israeli Dancers and Friends,

Chagigah is next month, October 16 to 19 in Wisconsin.
This is a wonderful Israeli dance camp. This year
they are combining with Hilulim. If you can make it,
go, you will enjoy it. See
http://osrui.urjcamps.org/yearround/programs/chagigah/

Erev Yom Kippur is Sunday night, so I will not be
at West Coast Swing, but Richard will be. It is
teacher's choice, so go out for a surprise teach
and then dancing.

Did you see the moon tonight? For a few minutes the moon
was as striking as I have ever seen, maybe because the sun
is at the equinox. Look tonight in the southern sky at dusk,
before the sky is black. You should see against a blue background,
a bright, nearly half moon, with the other half illuminated
by earthshine, which is sunlight that bounces off the earth
and lights up the dark side of the moon. A few hours later,
you will be able to see impressive Jupiter in the middle of
the southern sky. Friday night, at the Museum of Natural
History is a big event celebrating the 400 Year of Astronomy.

the Service of the Kohain Gadol, the high priest.

Our cantor pronounces every
word, very fast, and so this is the shortest service of the year.

Then I head home, where my mom has family and friends over to
break the fast with a light, dairy meal.

With our soul cleansed, we are ready to start fresh and
dance unencumbered by our past.

Drew Copeland / Gators Song

From: Melissa Berlin

I hope this email finds you well. I wanted speak with you regarding Sister Hazel band member Drew Copeland. I am not sure if you are aware of the buzz that's been surrounding Drew and the University of Florida Gators, but University of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer proclaimed Drew Copelands song "A Little Like Heaven" the unofficial theme song to the city!

Since the team is doing so well and Drew Copeland and Sister Hazel are so revered in their hometown, we would love to provide a free download or streaming audio link for the song. The song is about Gainesville and Meyer said he plays it before the games to get the team pumped up. Below is a link to the article surrounding Urban Meyer as well as a streaming audio link to the song. Let me know if you'd be interested in posting something about this and I can get you anything else you may need.

Sept.18, 2009 --FLUORIDE UPDATE

PLEASE ACT NOW; WE HAVE A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY TO INPUT OUR COMMENTS ON GAINESVILLE'S WATER FLUORIDATION.

Please take advantage of this chance to tell the city commissioners what you feel about this while the Regional Utilities Committee
is deciding whether the issue warrants taking to the whole commission or not, a decision that might be finalized on Oct.8 at the
next RUC meeting.

Let them know you want them to look at the science and not accept blanket reassurances from agencies that in reality don't protect

Massive oil spill off Australia, stop this from happening in Florida

From: Mark Ferrulo, Progress Florida mark@progressflorida.org
Sent: Thursday, September 17, 2009 11:41 AM

Progress Florida http://progressflorida.org/page/m2/30228c8b/4c07a42c/2f02d6aa/45179dc/1136629097/VEsH/

As you read this, a massive oil spill is happening off the coast of Australia (see photo right): beginning nearly a month ago, at
least 17,000 gallons of crude oil a day have been gushing into the ocean near critical habitat for sea turtles, dolphins and the
endangered pygmy blue whale*. The sick irony is that the lobbyists pushing to drill in Florida waters have touted Australia as a
model, and the oil rig that caused this ongoing ecological disaster was acclaimed as safe, new technology when it was built just a
year ago.

Many of you signed our petition supporting Sen. Nelson's threat to filibuster a bill allowing drilling off Florida's coast in
Congress. We delivered those petitions directly to Sen. Nelson two weeks ago. He was thrilled and his opposition to drilling was
further bolstered.

Now we must focus on the fight brewing in the state legislature, where Big Oil is trying to ram through a bill to allow drilling as
close as three miles from our coast. The fight to save Florida's coast will be won or lost in the State Senate, where Senator Jeff
Atwater is the Senate President.

Click here to send a fax to Senate President Atwater urging him to stop any effort to drill near Florida's coast.
http://progressflorida.org/page/m2/30228c8b/4c07a42c/2f02d6aa/45179d2/1136629097/VEsF/

The facts are clear: drilling off our coast won't do anything about gas prices or our dependence on foreign oil. In addition, oil
drilling poses a massive threat to our pristine coastline and our $65 billion dollar tourist industry.

We need to get a message to Senate President Atwater: don't give in to Big Oil's lies and distortions:

Click here to send Senate President Atwater a fax with our simple online tool today.
http://progressflorida.org/page/m2/30228c8b/4c07a42c/2f02d6aa/45179d1/1136629097/VEsC/

If our legislature wants to do something about gas and energy prices, then it's time to stop delaying what actually needs to be
done: significant investment in efficiency, conservation and support for renewable energy technologies like wind, solar and ocean
current power.

Thank you for your help thus far and please forward this message to friends and family.

For progress,

Mark, Damien, and the rest of the Progress Florida team

Flouridation Action Update

From: Karen Eberly kareneberly@hotmail.com
Sent: Monday, September 14, 2009 2:17 PM

Fluoridation Action Update, 9/14/09

Since my last email announcing the meeting of 9/10/09 some interesting developments have occurred.

* I was interviewed on WUFT radio Wed. and Thurs., 9/9/09 and 9/10/09, telling about the industrial waste product added to our water
supply and how it isn't tested. This issue raised hackles (it should!) and led to a call from the CDC. Then GRU asked for equal time
to respond, so today I heard their interview with Tony Cunningham, who said the product is thoroughly tested (not true - see below)
and evaded the questions about where it comes from (phosphate fertilizer plants), and added that at the next RUC meeting, (maybe
Oct.8) NO FURTHER COMMENTS ON THIS ISSUE WILL BE PERMITTED BY CITIZENS!

* At the meeting on 9/10/09 with the Regional Utilities Committee (RUC) of the Gvlle city commission, we managed to present lots of
fluoride information with references to studies to back it up. We had about 20 people there to testify against fluoridation on the
grounds it is not safe, effective, ethical, or perhaps even legal. On the status quo side were the RUC (Mayor Hanrahan, Chair Lauren
Poe, and Craig Lowe), several GRU people, some public health people, and four dentists, who all said how wonderful fluoridation is
and that there is 60 years of research showing that, along with their anecdotal observations, but didn't cite one single study. They
also kowtowed to CDC spokesman Kip Duchon who was speaking on conference phone.

* I was told that the minutes of this meeting are now being summarized by GRU and then will be censored (ooops, I mean "edited") by
a committee before being posted on the city site: www.cityofgainesville.org

* Because the meeting was moved to the big auditorium at the last minute, it was videotaped and I requested a copy. They may be
"editing" this also --- I will find out when I get it. Anyone can request a copy at city hall or through GRU; it may cost $1-3 for
the DVD.

They generally insulted our intelligence and attacked my info. as "outdated" because some of it was compiled in 2006, while they
were referring indirectly to questionable studies of the 50s and 60s. We could tell that the committee had its mind made up before
we opened our mouths, and it became clear they had previously met with the dentists/public health people and been told to push the
party line. All the agencies that are supposed to protect us are pushing fluoridation (under corporate and political pressure to do
so): the FDA, the CDC, and the EPA. GRU is following orders.

The one issue that stood out to me is the VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE OF EXISTENCE OF SAFETY TESTING ON THE "PRODUCT" THEY ADD TO GVLLE
WATER. The product (actually classified as "hazardous waste" before cities are willing to buy it) is a fluoride compound called
hydrofluosilicic acid (H2SiF6), obtained from phosphate fertilizer plants as a waste product. I have in writing from GRU last month,
and I quote: "To our knowledge there is not an individual toxicological study performed on hydrofluosilicic acid." End quote. Legal
proof. I also have a letter from the EPA saying as of 2000 they knew of no studies either.

The "experts" tried to evade this issue by citing the testing done on the CONTAMINANTS in the product: arsenic, mercury, lead, etc.,
which they claim are in such small amounts they are safe. However, testing on the contaminants is NOT EQUIVALENT to testing on the
compound itself. Thus, the fact remains that we are being forced to drink an industrial hazardous waste product that has no safety
testing.

ATTACHMENTS:
1- a printable notice about what further actions you can take at this time.

2- my response on the lack of testing of hydrofluosilicic acid that I submitted today to the official records of the 9/10/09
meeting.

Thanks for all you do,
Karen Eberly

Non-existence of toxicological testing on hydrofluosilicic acid (H2SiF6)

Additional comments on the RUC meeting of Sept.10, 2009

The RUC committee clearly doesn't admit the crucial difference between testing on a particular compound and testing on "potential
constituents" of a compound. I have it in writing from GRU stating (and I quote): "To our knowledge there is not an individual
toxicological study performed on hydrofluosilicic acid." (or hydrofluorosilicic acid, or hexafluorosilicic acid, or silicofluorides,
or fluorosilicates, or H2SiF6 -- all refer to the same compound).

In fact, this most-salient sentence was left out of the meeting agenda and only the statement about testing the "potential
constituents" of the compound was printed in there.
Whether by "potential constituents" Mr. Cunningham means the many trace contaminants in the H2SiF6, such as arsenic, lead, thallium,
etc., or whether he means the silica and fluorine ions that make up the compound, the point is that testing on any of these
"potential constituents" is NOT EQUIVALENT TO TESTING THE H2SiF6 ITSELF, which hasn't been done.

Furthermore, in general, different fluoride compounds have different toxicities, with the silicofluorides being the MOST TOXIC of
all, classed "EXTREMELY TOXIC," while sodium fluoride and calcium fluoride are less so. (See the document submitted to the official
record at the meeting, 9/10/09).
I read the NSF Fact Sheet and found it to say that testing on the chemicals added to water is required "if available," two words
that were left out in Mr. Cunningham's presentation. In this case, testing on H2SiF6 doesn't exist, so is not "available."

I also have it in writing from the EPA that as of the year 2000 they knew of no studies done on this compound either. (This letter
was also submitted to the official record of the 9/10/09 meeting.)
Therefore, I stand by my statement that there are no toxicological studies on H2SiF6 and I challenge anyone to show me one.

Thus I wish to clarify that as drinkers of Gainesville water fluoridated with H2SiF6, we have no assurance of this particular
compound's safety or efficacy due to the nonexistence of testing on the compound itself.

Respectfully submitted on 9/14/09,
Karen Eberly

Continuing fluoridation actions 9/14/09

Continuing fluoridation actions- 9/14/09

If you attended the Regional Utilities Committee meeting 9/10/09, please follow up by writing any comments on the mtg. to submit to
the official record ASAP (either give them to the clerk at city hall or email them to HENLEYJJ@gru.com); and then consider writing
letters to the editor of the Gvlle Sun about what went down at the meeting, or The Iguana or Fine Print on campus; and talk this up.

If you couldn't attend the RUC meeting on 9/10/09, here's something you can do: Send e-mails to city commissioners saying you fully
support (Karen Eberly's) efforts to get the facts out about fluoridation's risks and although you couldn't make the meeting, you
want to add your own experience, findings, whatever. Let them know that those 20 people who did go aren't the only ones in town who
want GRU to stop polluting our drinking water. Make some noise.

. For facts and information: www.fluoridealert.org
. To E-mail city commissioners: www.cityofgainesville.org

P.S. In Gainesville, our city commissioners are in effect the board of directors of GRU. They are your elected officials and are
supposed to respond to their constituency.
Thanks for anything you do.

--Karen Eberly,
presenter of the case against fluoridation at the 9/10/09 meeting, along with 20 citizens, most of whom made comments there.

Article: Gainesville is so nice

I was helping the new Israeli shlicha (emissary) refresh her
stick shift driving skills. She arrived recently and the car
they gave her was a manual transmission.

The car had been sitting for three months. After she stalled
the car several times, in rush hour traffic, the battery died.
We had to get help pushing the car to get it started. Then we
drove around for a couple of hours to recharge the battery.

We were the first car stopped at a red light with a number
of cars behind us. The light turned green, but we had some
trouble getting the car in the right gear and moving forward.
Eventually we managed to go and Yael said, "How come nobody
was honking?"

Gainesville is so nice.

Webhosting for your business

A friend of mine asked me about handling her website for her business. She had gotten a few estimates by web designers that started
at $1,600 and went to $5,000 for creating her website. The ongoing charge is $15 per month.

To me that is a waste. All you need is a pretty picture at the top of the page. Why spend thousands of dollars for that. You are
writing your own copy anyway.

The charges are exactly the opposite of what they should be. Your website is part of your business and grows with you. The charges
should reflect that. The up front charge should be small and you should have steady support as you go along.

We use a phenomenal program DotNetNuke for content management. This lets you update your website yourself and is loaded with
features letting you make changes, post articles and do lots of other stuff on your website.

After we discussed her website, I sent her the following summary.

-----------------------------------

Here is the info about your website.

1. $300 - Installation and training.
This includes creating your website and
training you on how to update your website yourself.
You provide the graphics and text.

2. $55/month - business website support.
This includes DotNetNuke for content management,
web hosting and taking care of all the techincal stuff
for your website. You can find more details here.
http://www.webhosting.vg/

3. $75/hour - hourly rate for any work
that you have us do.

4. Negotiable for Internet Marketing - data entry
emailing, posting articles, exchanging links.
If you want us to help market your website by
posting your information in different places,
we can discuss this. You can do this type of
thing yourself and I can tell you how. Or, I
can have one of my staff do this.

5. Email List Management
I recommend Constant Contact for email list
management. My company is a business partner
with them. The entry level is $15/month for 500 people.
You can send as many emails as you like and have
as many lists as you like. B'nai Israel uses them.
See http://www.constantcontact.com/index.jsp?pn=bronzebp
You can use free free services from Google, Yahoo
or Live.com, but they have ads. You can do it yourself
on your own PC. We have not yet explored using DotNetNuke
for this. It has some capabilities, but I do not yet
know to what extent.

You can go to www.verajoffe.com to see an installation
of DotNetNuke that one of my customers is using. She loves
being able to change the information and post articles
whenever she likes.

As far as SEO, you can go to google and try these searches:

A. Search for: Jewish Events
My website www.JewishNetwork.com comes up #1 out of 26 million hits.

B. Search for: Tree Service Palm Beach County
My customer www.ZimmermanTreeService.com comes up #3

C. Search for: Partner Dancing
My website www.IsraeliPartnerDancing.com comes up #6 out of 15 million.

D. Search for: Gastroenterology Board Review
My customer www.giboardreview.com comes up #1

Thank you,
Andy

090905 Swing Newsletter, West Coast Swing

Hello Gainesville Area Dancers and Friends,

This Sunday in West Coast Swing, we will go over something we
have not covered yet, the woman's one-and-a-half turn. Maybe
we will give the men a turn too so they can share in the fun.
See the article below for class structure.

Thanks to everyone that came to the social last week.
We had a nice turn out and got in a lot of dancing.

Let me know what I can do to make the dance parties better
for you.

Pay attention to the music and let me know what you like and
do not like. Check the iPod for the name of the songs and make
a note on the list by the sound system. Make requests as well.

Am thinking about holding a beginners class for Hustle.
Let me know if you are interested.

There are swing classes in both East and West Coast on Wednesday
nights starting at 7 pm at the Eagles Club, formerly Dubs, on
North 441 where 13 Street curves off towards Alachua.

We are doing one-night only of Israeli Partner Dancing,
Monday, September 14 at 7 pm at a private home in
NW Gainesville near NW 43 Street and NW 8 Avenue.
This will be real easy, suitable for first timers.
Space is limited. Let me know if you can make it.

Remember, three weeks of free clogging classes is starting
Sunday September 13. Take advantage of this opportunity.
It only comes along once a year.

This Sunday is a Contra dance at the Boltin Center at 4 pm.

There are a few things going on at the ballroom dance studio
this month. Check one or more out that sound appealing to you.

- Regular monthly social on Saturday September 12
- Country Two Step class on Monday September 21
- Benefit Dance for St. Jude's Children Research Hospital
on Saturday September 26

See www.imperialdancestudio.net for details or call 352-375-7763.

Article: Class Structure

During our regular weekly classes we try to mix learning
with social dance time.

The format of the evening is:

6:30 - 7:30 : Class
7:30 - 8:30 : Structured practice, rotating partners
8:30 - 9:30 : Open dancing

The class format we have been trying to follow is:

1. Warm up to get comfortable with our footwork
and practice keeping time with the music

2. Some sort of balance exercise to improve a
basic skill in walking or turning

3. Communication and choreography

During structured practice, we rotate partners to
make sure everyone is getting in dances. In between
dances, I may point out ideas for you to try.

Let me know what changes you would like to make the
dance sessions better for you.
