Eagles Club Swing: Labor Day WCS Dance Party

Howdy Dance Partner! <---- *John Wayne's voice*

Well here we are again, getting ready for some SERIOUS PARTYING!!!!!

And how can you tell when someone is doing some serious partying?? Mostly their facial expression. They look serious.

All seriousness aside, it's time for our "First Wednesday of the Month" West Coast Swing Dance Party! This month, we are celebrating Labor Day, some come on down and celebrate by doing the opposite of labor: goofing off! We will be playing lots of great dance tunes to assist with said off-goofing! Expect our usual outstanding mix of WCS tunes, as well a little East Coast, Lindy, Two Step, ChaCha, Waltz, "Swango", Hustle, Salsa, and Night Club 2 Steps! Also, some icky romantic songs too for all the Grown Ups. (Thank goodness I'm not a grown up yet!)

Also, because I am a big fan of thankless tasks, I have spent a lot of time laboring over a hot Internet connection to net us a bunch of new WCS tunes! (New to me anyway) So come out and bask in the sonic goodness! The music starts at 7:00, and runs until 11:00-ish. Same entry: $3 members - $5 Non-members.

Please feel free to bring along some finger foods to wow people with your cooking prowess!

See you there!

May the Dance gods smile upon your footwork,

Josh "Always Serious" Angel

Article: Mambo, Salsa Basic Steps On 1 Verses On 2 Differences
There is a good video here.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQa_DvzkK9w
The following presumes you know Salsa On 1, which is the most common.
Basically Mambo and Salsa On 1 are the same.
Salsa On 1 you start on the first beat of the music.
Mambo you start on the second beat.
If you are used to dancing Salsa On 1, dancing Mambo to the same music can be difficult.
The difference between Salsa On 1 and Salsa On 2 is when you take your break step. You step on the same beats in the music in both.
Salsa On 1 your first step is your break step, then you take two steps back home.
Salsa On 2 your first step is home and your second step is your break step.
While Mambo and Salsa On 1 feel the same, Salsa On 2 feels different.
The reason being, Salsa On 1 you step out and back home, out and back home.
In Salsa On 2, you take two steps and change direction, two steps and change direction.
Salsa On 1 is stop and go.
Salsa On 2 is more fluid.
You can find more words here.

August 19-20 Orlando Transportation Summit Defend Florida's Wildlife

Wildlife Alert

Help Protect Our Florida Wildlife

Florida Panther (Photo: USFWS)

Speak out at the Florida Department of Transportation Summit next week! Your voice is crucial to the future of imperiled wildlife across the state.

Show Up & Speak Out -- RSVP Now!

Forward this message to friends across Florida!

Dear Andrew

Each year across the state, thousands of endangered panthers, turtles, key deer, and black bears are killed due to traffic accidents. Many of these species are struggling to survive and are being killed while simply searching for food or habitat. You can do something about it.

Next Thursday and Friday the Florida Department of Transportation will be holding a statewide transportation summit in Orlando. RSVP now to stand up with Defenders and support wildlife!

At the summit, the Department of Transportation will be giving the public an opportunity to speak up about the future of transportation in Florida. It is vital that wildlife supporters attend to make sure all highway projects are investing in protecting our native panthers, turtles, deer, and bears.

On Thursday, the session will discuss a long range transportation plan and Friday will open discussions about the current strategic transportation plan in Florida.

Currently there are only 120 panthers estimated to be left in Florida. And over the last 5 years, 60% of panther deaths have been due to traffic accidents! Road-kill is also the number one source of mortality for the state threatened Florida black bears, which are considered threatened under Florida law. In 2009, 118 bears were killed in collisions with vehicles. Even more shocking, US 27 through Lake Jackson in Leon County has been reported as having the highest turtle mortality rates in the world!

Crossing structures are vital to the future of countless species across Florida. Florida needs an increase in measures to protect our native species, as well as the means to protect the natural habitats that these species call home.

What: Defenders Supporters at the Florida Department of Transportation Summit
When: Thursday, August 19th 1:00pm-6:00pm
Friday, August 20th 9:00am-3:00pm
Where: Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport
9300 International Blvd.
Orlando, FL

Join me in speaking up to ensure that panthers, Florida black bears and turtles continue to be a part of the Florida landscape for generations to come. RSVP Now.

The Florida Department of Transportation needs to hear from wildlife supporters across the state as they develop their new plans. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to influence the future of our state, and the future of our native panthers, turtles, deer, and black bears.

I hope you can join me in Orlando next Thursday and Friday!

See you there,

Elizabeth Fleming with a Panther Kitten Elizabeth Fleming

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

Think there is line dancing on Thursdays at the Eagles Club with Sandi. Will try to have information about this for next week.

English Country dancing on Thursdays is like what they danced in the movie Pride and Prejudice. They do have the actual dance from the movie. It is a lot of fun. Give it a try.

Early voting in Florida

The primary election here in Florida is on Tuesday, August 24th -- but every day is Election Day because early voting starts today.

You will be able to vote early until Saturday, August 21st or Sunday, August 22nd, depending on your county. For information on
where and when to vote in your area, please download it here.
http://election.dos.state.fl.us/pdf/Early_Voting_Sites_Primary_2010.pdf

After early vote ends, you can go to your regular polling place from 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, August 24th.

Floridians will cast their votes for candidates who will represent them in state and local government and in the halls of
Congress -- so it's crucial that as many voters as possible make their voices heard.

Early voting is available to all voters, so be sure that you make it out to the polls.

Thanks,
Ashley

Protect Habit for the Less than 100 Florida Panthers Left

care2 petitionsite actionAlert

Hi Green,

There are less than a 100 Florida panthers left, making it one of America's most endangered species.

Save the Florida panther. »

Although the Florida panther was originally declared an endangered species by the federal government in 1967, the amendment to the Endangered Species Act which required each species so listed to also have "designated critical habitat" did not go into effect until 1978.

As a result, no critical habitat exists for America's only big cat east of the Mississippi.

The Interior Department has the ability under the Endangered Species Act to protect the remaining habitat now. Urge Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to designate critical habitat for the Florida panther today. »

Thanks for taking action!

August Mosquito Alert Gainesville from Alachua County Health Department

August 4, 2010 2:10 p.m.
This release sent at the request of the Alachua County Health Department.

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Health Department (ACHD) has detected mosquito borne diseases in the County. "Our sentinel
surveillance system indicates that disease transmission is occurring," stated Anthony Dennis, Environmental Health Director at the
ACHD. "Taking a few simple steps can drastically reduce the chances of contracting
a mosquito-borne illness."

Symptoms of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) may include headache, fever, fatigue, dizziness,
weakness, and confusion. Physicians should contact ACHD if they suspect an individual may have a mosquito-
borne illness.

Florida Department of Health (FDOH) laboratories provide testing services for physicians treating patients with clinical signs of
mosquito-borne diseases.

The ACHD continues to advise citizens to remain diligent in protecting themselves from mosquito bites by following the "5 D's,"
which include:

* Drainage - Check aroundyour home to rid the area of standing water, which is where mosquitoes can lay their eggs.

* DEET - When the potential exists for exposure to mosquitoes, repellents containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, or
N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide)are recommended. Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus are other repellent options.

* Dress - Wear clothing that coversmost ofyour skin.

* Dusk and Dawn - Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active.

For more information on mosquito borne illnesses, visit the ACHD website at www.AlachuaCountyHealth.org

(Quick note: while we dance for fun, Jewish culture and the Torah are intimately woven into Israeli dancing. So occassionally I like to share some with you. Last week's parsha (Torah portion) was loaded and included these verses.)

- Behold, unto the Lord your God belongs the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, the earth, with all that therein is. ~ Dueteronomy 10:14

- And now Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, to keep for your good the commandments of the Lord. ~ Deuteronomy 10:12-13
