Article: Knock Down Drag Out Fights Are Good for You

I had a big fight with one of my dance teachers.

In my family, growing up, we fought so much that we had a name for the real doozies, "Knock Down Drag Out Fights".

My parents were together 50 years. One of their rules was to present a united front. They never fought in front of the kids.

When I was little, I asked my mother if I could do something and she said no, so I asked my father and he said yes. Sometime later my dad came up to me, furious and said, "Are you trying to get me divorced? If either one of us says no, it is no."

If you are not fighting, you do not have a close relationship. Everyone has feelings of frustration that turn into anger and resentment. They have to come out. If you keep them in, you start planning the demise of your partner, and like my cousin's wife of 15 years, one day say out of the blue, "I want a divorce."

In "Life as We Know It", after the two stars of the movie have a Knock Down Drag Out Fight in front of all their friends, Josh Lucas says to Katherine Heigl, "If my wife and I fought like that, we would still be married."

I was getting annoyed in this dance class I was going to, when the teacher asked for feedback. I answered her email with a short suggestion. She wrote me back asking for details, saying she could not make changes unless she knew specifically what they should be. I wrote her a long email back going into a lot of details.

She wrote me back, insulted and furious, "You go too far!".

This fight did not reach the satisfying proportions of a Knock Down Drag Out Fight, but I did almost get kicked out class.

There is only one important thing you need to do in a Knock Down Drag Out Fight, finish it.

My first girlfriend had a mouth on her. She used to start up with me on everything. We had a lot of fights. She used to call me a bulldog, because she said I would not let anything go if it was bothering me. She was as challenging and as much fun as anyone I have known.

Fights clear the air. They get rid of resentment, restore healthy feelings and make relationships stronger. The person you fought with knows you care enough to stick around and fight.

My dance teacher put my suggestions into practice and the next class was as good as any we have had, if I do say so myself, but more importantly, we have a stronger relationship for having fought.

The only problem with fighting is you have to have a willing partner. It only takes one person to ruin a relationship, but it takes two to fight.

When I think of the people I have known and the conflicts we have had, I cannot think of one fight I wish we did not have, but I can think of many fights I wish we did have.

Article: It helps to have an understanding partner

Saw Al at the Vintage Waltz brunch and asked him how his dancing was going.

Al said, "It helps to have an understanding partner."

Yes it does. I had a girlfriend who was my dance partner at Israeli dancing,
but she did not want me to go social dancing with her. She thought it cramped
her style.

On Sunday afternoons, we would be hanging around and then, without saying
anything, she would start getting ready, take a shower, put on nice clothes,
put on her make up and then leave.

I did not feel like sitting around Sunday nights, so after she left, I went
out some place else Israeli dancing. I got lucky and had a great regular
dance partner, really fun, attractive woman and former dance teacher.

After a while, my girlfriend got mad at me. She complained that Sunday afternoons,
we would be hanging around and then, without saying anything I would start getting
ready to go out, take a shower, put on nicer clothes and then leave.

Well my-ex and I are still both single, while Al and his understanding
partner are getting married in November. Congratulations Al.

English Country Dancing Come dance the FDR dance

Dear Dancers,

New dancers, experienced dancers--come join us and have a fun Monday evening with beautiful live music by Hoggetowne Fancy. We are doing higher level dances with newcomers and everyone is doing great and enjoying all the dances with very little teaching.

The first three couples who came last week got to do the FDR dance. What's that?  It's Crazy Marie a dance by Sol Weber--the Flirtation, Denial and Reconciliation Dance.  First the women snub the men, then the men snub the women, then they gypsy to smile again, then time to meet the neighbors. Such drama in some of these English dances!! We'll try to do it again this week.  We also did Hazelfern Place, the dance from the video in the email last week.  This week we will repeat the requested dances as well as some new ones.

Dances done last week were:  (those starred were requested by dancers to do again this week)

Crazy Marie (3 cpl, FDR dance)

Wibsey Roundabout (5 couple circle mixer; men clap 1x; women clap 2x)

* An Early Frost (LW, hole-in-the-wall cross w/partner; ending 2's turn ½, step/close, step/close)

* Bryan's Boutade (4 cpl change diagonally, change across; 2's & 3's go though 4's arch)

Lover's Knot (Lw, double mad robbin shuttle; very contraish)

Candles in the Dark (Waltz-man hands lady to figure 8)

* Hazelfern Place (LW, Line of 4 lead up; 2's in the middle (do some stuff); lines lead down, 2's in middle, 1's have changed sides)

Zephyrs & Flora (LW; corners join R hands; join L hands; turn half way)

The Black Cat (LW, Spiral counter clockwise into center; fall back into corner's place)

* Vivaldi in Paradise (LW, pass neighbor right, gypsy next left, gypsy neighbor right)

Waterfall Waltz (Sicilian Circle; step-close, step-close past the other couple)

The Florida English Dance weekend is coming soon, in October.  Please sign up for an enjoyable weekend.  Since this is the only one in Florida it is important that the dance community support those who put so much work into creating such an event in our backyard.  It's also a bargain.  The price of $140 (if double room) includes 2 nights lodging in a beautiful historic inn, dancing Friday evening, Saturday morning, afternoon, and evening, and Sunday morning, 2 wonderful continental breakfasts (fresh Belgian waffles), and Saturday lunch.  You will dance to the beautiful music of Full Circle and be led by David Millstone, an experienced caller who will call traditional English dances, both old and new.  You get to dance in the beautiful ballroom!!

Dance with us every Monday evening:

308 W University Avenue

Cost $5 + donation for the musicians (their only compensation)

First here are three new dance series in September.

1. Social Dancing for People with Two Left Feet starts September 4 and is for people who have a fear of dancing. Offered via Santa Fe College Community Education.

2. 8-Count Swing Rhythm Turn Specialty Class 3-Week Series starts September 4 and runs for three weeks. You will learn the Lindy Swing Rhythm turn with swing outs and many variations for endless combinations. Useful for all types of Swing, including East Coast, West Coast and Lindy Hop. This is the move that makes Swing Dancing swing.

Dance Quotes:

- It helps to have an understanding partner. ~ Al Handler

----------------------------------------------------------
Article: It helps to have an understanding partner
