Florida Senator LeMieux's Weekly Update

 

Congratulations Senator-Elect Marco Rubio I'm pleased to extend my sincerest congratulations to Senator-elect Marco Rubio. His values and principles will make him a great senator for our great state. Marco's commitment to helping the people of Florida will be a tremendous benefit to our state. Border Protection in Arizona I was honored to be invited by Senator John Kyl, along with Senator John Barroso, to visit the border of Arizona and Mexico to see first hand the challenges of illegal immigration. We toured border entry points, met with border and custom control agents, local law enforcement and visited with ranchers whose property runs along the border. Illegal immigration threatens our national security, taps our limited pubic resources, and destabilizes our border communities. For one rancher I met, Phil Krenz, it lead to the murder of his brother earlier this year. At the same time, legal immigration is the fuel that has fired the great American success story and needs to be ensured. The trip made clear that strong and aggressive border security can drastically cut down illegal migration. Well constructed fences, ample border agents working with the national guard, and strong penalties for illegal crossing including jail time and repatriation deep into Mexico have reduced illegal immigration in the Yuma district of Arizona by 95% in just a few years. This problem will continue growing until our borders and immigration system are fixed and I have encouraged my colleagues to undertake this matter sooner rather than later. High Tech Education in Florida High tech jobs are on the rise and as a result the need for training and education in this sector has increased. I had the pleasure of visiting our state's only polytechnic campus, one of four new campuses in the University of South Florida system. Located in Lakeland, USF Polytechnic is at the heart of Florida's High Tech Corridor. USFP students pursue degrees and certificates in over 20 degree and certificate programs, including applied science, industrial engineering, and information technology. During my visit, I toured the campus, met with the university's CEO and Vice President Marshall Goodman and a number of faculty members. I believe this is the future of Florida. This university is working to create a knowledge based economy, providing students with the skills necessary to succeed within the high tech arena. Florida not only needs to continue to attract high tech companies to our state, but we also have to ensure that we are prepared to work for these companies.   Governor-elect Rick Scott's Transition Team   I would like to congratulate Governor-Elect Rick Scott and Lt. Governor-elect Jennifer Carroll on their statewide victory and am honored to have been chosen to serve on the governor-elect's transition team. With their experience and commitment to Florida's families, the Scott/Carroll team will be a great asset working for the people of Florida, and working to improve our economy. Improving Florida's Climate for Small Business Innovation, commitment, and drive are all elements that can help companies succeed. But the fact of the matter is many small businesses need access to capital to grow their business and implement their plans. During a visit in Miami, I visited Pavilion Furniture, which specializes in designing and building high end patio and pool furniture.   During the difficult economic downturn, Pavilion unfortunately had to lay off some of its employees. This is why the new small business lending law is so important. The law will help free up capital for community banks to loan to small businesses, like this one. With more capital companies will be more flexible in weathering the economic downturn, have the ability to keep and create more jobs. After submitting all of the paperwork and not hearing back from the Social Security Administration, the constituent contacted our office for assistance. One of our caseworkers contacted the SSA and learned that the constituent's paper file was lost in transit. 1.  Help Recycle at the South Carolina Game This Weekend!

2.  Religion, Nature and Ethnobiology Symposium

3. Call for applications: NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The program aims to create the next generation of climate researchers. It endeavors to attract recent PhDs with research interests in areas relevant to the NOAA climate science and services program (http://www.climate.noaa.gov or http://www.globalchange.gov).

The deadline for applications is 17 January 2011. The program offers two-year postdoctoral fellowships, reviewed annually. Appointments will be announced in early spring 2011.

4. International Education Week

International Education Week, hosted by the University of Florida International Center, will offer ample activities for involvement on campus Nov. 14-19.

 

The theme, "Making Global Connections," focuses on understanding global cultures. It will highlight all the opportunities available to UF students for international education and study abroad programs.

5.  Lead101: Art of Leadership Conference

This year the Art of Leadership Conference will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2010 from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm in the J. Wayne Reitz Union. All students at the University of Florida are welcome and encouraged to attend. There is no cost for attendance and no limit to how many students may attend. Lunch will be provided!

 

This is a half day conference is designed to educate, develop, and inspire strong leaders to make progressive strides towards change at the University of Florida and beyond. Students will have an opportunity to explore values of their choice all while enhancing and developing their leadership skills' through experiencing a variety of workshops, speakers, and activities.

6. Harn Museum of Art: Dialogue on Florida Springs, Thursday, November 18, 5 p.m.
Join us for an interdisciplinary dialogue on Florida springs featuring artistic and scientific perspectives on the beauty and ecology of our water.

Participants include Gainesville-based Margaret Tolbert, whose painting, Silent Springs, has been selected as the poster for this year's WUFT-FM 89.1 and WJUF-FM 9 Fall membership drive; writer Bill Belleville, whose eloquent writings focus on nature and conservation; Jim Stevenson who served as Chief Biologist for the Florida State Park System for 20 years, chaired the Florida Springs Task Force, and was Director of the Governor's Florida Springs Protection Initiative; and UF Professor Jon Martin who researches surface water and ground water interactions as a member of the Department of Geological Sciences; and Matthew J. Cohen  whose work in the School of Forest Resources & Conservation focuses on wetland processes. A poster signing by Margaret Tolbert will take place at the Florida Museum of Natural History following the presentation at the Harn.

7. Projects for Peace Information Session
An information sessions will be held November 16 at 5 p.m. in Peabody 411. UF students have once again been invited to participate in Projects for Peace, an initiative for students to design their own grassroots projects for peace that they will implement during the summer of 2011 — the top projects will be selected for funding at $10,000 each.

Treat yourself to some fun doing Israeli Partner Dances. You deserve it.

Everyone welcome. No experience and no partner needed.

The first hour is for beginner's. You do not need to know how to dance. You will learn. Everyone can learn Israeli Partner Dancing.

Easy, exuberant, great music, great friends, come out for a great time.

On Monday nights, beginning November 22 to December 27 at B'nai Israel, 3830 NW 16 Blvd, Gainesville.

7 to 8 pm for beginners with slow teaching.

8 to 8:40 pm teaching and review.

8:40 to 9:00 pm dancing.

Starts exactly on time. Do not be late.

$5 per evening, or $20 in advance for the entire series, which will be a minimum of 4 and up to 6 nights. Ages 22 and under free. Other students $2. If you have financial difficulties, you can come for free.

We rotate partners and do dances more than once, so everyone gets to do every dance, everyone gets to dance the same amount and everyone gets to dance with everyone else. If you come with your spouse and you do not want to rotate, you do not have to. Rotating is your option.

Teaching is based on my book Partnership Dancing(tm).

Rather than memorizing choreography, the women will learn the skill of how to follow every Israeli Partner Dance without learning the steps. This is a good skill to have and is applicable to all social dances, particularly choreographed dances. You will be able to follow other folk dances, including things like Contra Dancing, without having to worry about the patterns.

The men will learn how to make every dance a pleasure by communicating via their body language. You will learn how to get the woman to do what you want by manipulating space, without wrestling the woman around.

There is no gender bias. You can dance which ever part you want.

We will be videoing some of the teaching.

From Andrea Pham: Vietnamese Student Organization is going to hold Pho Fundraiser this Sunday, November 7 from 11:00am - 9:00pm at the Gainesville Garden Club (1350 NW 75th St). VSO organizes this fundraiser twice a year in order to support the Vietnamese cultural showcases for UF students, faculty, families and friends (free). 'Pho' is a Vietnamese traditional soup with rice noodles and beef slices (vegan noodle soup available). The price is $7.50 for a bowl of pho, a traditional Vietnamese dessert, and a drink. Or all you can eat for $20. Please come with friends or your family to enjoy this dish as your Sunday delight and support VSO.
