Tango, New Years, No Swing, 308, Israeli

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

This Saturday night, December 25 Dubravko is hosting a Tango gathering and celebration in the small room at the UTC, 809 W University. Bring treats if you like. Time has not been determined. The last one was 5 to 7, but I guess this will run later.

Who is going to step up and plan some dancing for New Year's Eve? Let me know and I will send out a special announcement next week.

If no dancing turns up, downtown Gainesville has a nice event, with a live band. I have been to Times Square, Las Vegas Blvd and New Orleans for New Years Eve, and Gainesville's last year was better than all of them, and free.

Both Orlando and Tampa have New Years Eve swing dancing events. If you need to share a ride, let me know. I might be tempted. Have heard a group is going to Orlando and if you want to go there, I can try to put you in touch with them.

UF Swing and Tango is on break and no West Coast at the Eagles.

After Saturday night, no Swing or Tango seems to be on the schedule, so come out Monday to my Israeli Partner Dance session and we will have some fun.

For a treat, go to English on Thursday night. See the Gainesville Ocala folk dancing newsletter.

Wow, phenomenal performance by Full Circle Band at last weekend's Contra Dance. See the article below.

Andrea and Caroline have Gainesville Tango and Ballroom semi-private dance classes in January. See below.

Huge thank you to Tango Encanto for providing us with a year of dancing and workshops. Tango Encanto is retiring, but do not worry. Dubravko is planning to host regular dancing. Thank you Elke.

On Monday nights, beginning November 22 to December 27, for 4 to 5 nights.

Everyone welcome. No experience and no partner needed.

We rotate partners and do dances more than once, so everyone gets to do every dance, everyone gets to dance the same amount and everyone gets to dance with everyone else. If you come with your spouse and you do not want to rotate, you do not have to. Rotating is your option.

Teaching is based on my book Partnership Dancing(tm).

Rather than memorizing choreography, the women will learn the skill of how to follow every Israeli Partner Dance without learning the steps. This is a good skill to have and is applicable to all social dances, particularly choreographed dances.

The men will learn how to communicate via their body language. You will learn how to get the woman to do what you want by manipulating space, without wrestling the woman around.

There is no gender bias. You can dance which ever part you want.

We may be videoing some of the sessions.

Article: English and Contra a Fortunately Acquired Taste

One night a few years ago, I went out looking for a Swing dance and accidentally ended up in the wrong place, at Tara Bolker's Gainesville English Country Dancing.

They needed six people and I was the sixth, so maybe there are no accidents and I was where the universe needed me to be.

The people were pleasant and Tara is a pro, I enjoyed the evening, but English Country Dancing was not interesting enough for me. I felt the same way about Contra Dancing. That was no reflection on English or Contra, only on my own poor palate.

I was used to wildly, careening out-of-control in Swing and Israeli dancing, and English seemed too sedate. While there is plenty of wild, out-of-control careening in Contra, the dancing seemed too easy.

Times have changed.

Somewhere along the line, and I do not know how it happened, I started to appreciate the English and Contra music and dancing.

Sure, English and Contra dancing are easy and anyone can dance their very first time, which is one of the best featurse of this type of dancing, but for those that want, like any dancing, you can constantly challenge yourself to add your own style and keep improving.

Last Saturday night's Contra dance was the best I have been to. Full Circle Band was great beyond words. You have to hear them.

Randy and Annette have turned English Country Dancing into a treasure on Thursday nights.
