Sacred Grooving, Zydeco and West Coast Swing Dances, Rio-Style Samba, Super Sunday

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

Went to the Sacred Groove meditative dance last night. See the article for a review.

UF European Studies Department is throwing a festival in April and is looking for dance groups to perform. See the article.

Saw Rocky the other night. It is the last movie I remember watching with my parents before my dad passed away. We kept saying, "What a great movie."

Congratulations to Marilyn for running a nice ballroom dance event at the new Senior Center.

Friday night join Burcin and Irena for an excellent Argentine Tango lesson and casual dance practice for only $5 for the public. Students free. Use the back room if you like to do your own thing. Nick will help you out too.

Saturday night you get two parties and a lesson in one. Zydeco Sweethearts Pre-Party from 6 to 7:30 with a lesson and dancing. From 7:30 to 8:30 take a West Coast Swing lesson with Judi Markell. Stay from 8:30 to midnight for the Valentine's West Coast Swing dance. Bring chocolates for your sweetheart. $15 for everything.

This weekend is Super Sunday with up to 6 hours of dancing and no TV.

There is a Contra dance at the Boltin Center from 4 to 7.

Sunday we have two classes at 308 West for new dancers, Contra 101 at 5 and Swing 101 at 6. $10 for the whole night if you did not sign up already. We need helpers for Contra 101, so if you already know Contra somewhat, you can come by for free to help out.

Sunday night from 7 to 8:30 is Swing, all kinds. 8:30 to 9:30 is Hustle! We learn to dance without any tension and pressure. If you want dance safely, easily, comfortably and naturally, without anyone pushing and pulling you, come out for a fun evening.

Forget Zumba, do the real thing, Rio-style Samba with Corey Souza on Monday from 5 to 6.

Richard's ballroom and swing classes are on Tuesday.

Essie teaches West Coast Swing on Wednesdays.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Article: Sacred Grooving

Last weekend I joined the Sacred Groove meditative dance.

The room was transformed into a cozy, mystical setting, with low lights, draped materials and mysterious nicknacks.

Most everyone was dressed in folksy, loose fitting clothing. I felt out of place in a polo shirt and dockers, like I was the corporate guy in a dark suit at a hippy convention. I took my shoes off to get with the program.

The room was full. We sat on the floor in a large oval, knee to knee, "closing the gaps," according to Suzmiche, our leader.

Suzmiche said, "This is a chance for you to be in a non-judgmental place." I am not sure what else she said, except she kept mentioning "non-judgmental". When she was done, she asked if there were any questions.

I wanted to ask, "Yeah, what do we do?", but I did not say anything.

The music started, which felt like Hindo Rhythm and Blues, if there could be such a thing. Everyone got up and started dancing.

Being someone who practices with a video camera, if I was going to get my Sacred Groove on, I had to shut my eyes. There was no way I could watch these people dance without judging them and without judging myself in the mirror.

Until Suzmiche invited me, I had no intention of going. Have to say, it is fun to have a unique, unexpected challenge, especially when you do not expect it. Sounds like something Yogi would say.

For an hour and a half, we bounced around. I peeked a few times. The music changed like the scenery in a cross country drive and so how we moved. There was dancing, sitting, rolling and laying, with and without partners that came and went, not me though. I was strictly celibate.

When the music reached a pitch, and the room was pulsing, I wondered if people were going to start throwing their clothes off. Later I was told, no alcohol and no drugs permitted, which explained the temperance, though it could have gone either way.

People ended up on the floor with a slow ohm hum and a few isolated dancers. I laid on back, my eyes were open by then, and I was not judging a thing, only appreciating the patterns on the ceiling and admiring a woman's hands dancing in a corner of my vision. I was Sacred Grooving.

The next one is April 29.

Article: UF Viva Europe Festival Looking for Dance Groups to Participate

[This is from UF]

We are doing an event: VIVA EUROPE is a free festival and celebration of the food, dance, music, languages, and culture of Europe. We will have a full day of music and dance performances, food vendors, displays, contests, kid's activities, etc at the Bo Diddley Plaza from 11-4 on Saturday April 7.

We are hoping to have several local dance groups share their enthusiasm for European folk dancing by performing at VIVA EUROPE.

Could you forward this mail to any groups who you think might be interested?

Thank you,
Gail
