Article: The Curious Case of the Upside Down Chumush

In addition to a prayer book, in synagogue, we also use a chumash, which contains the torah (five books of Moses) and the haftorah (some of the prophets and writings).

When you place a chumash on the shelf, you should always place the chumash right side up, because the chumash contains the written name of god.

At synagogue Saturday, I said to the Hillel rabbi, "look, I have a collector's edition," and showed her my chumash. Then I opened up the cover, and the contents of the book were upside down.

She said that would be a good topic for a sermon, what is more important, appearances or reality.

I am one of those people that turn the chumushes right side up, but I never looked inside before doing so.

It is Shabbat, so we cannot put a label on the outside of the chumush.

Can we expect people to look inside a chumush before turning it over?

If we place this chumush upside down, someone may come turn it over without looking inside.

If we place this chumush right side up, the name of god is upside down.

How should we place this chumush?
