090619 Sunday June 21 Dance Social, lots of dance news

Hello Gainesville Area Dancers and Friends,

Lots of dance news this week.

The big item is this Sunday June 21 is the longest day of the year
and we are having a dance social. We will be playing mostly slower
music suitable for all types of swing and other social dancing.

Everyone is invited. There will be a short lesson on how to turn
your Lindy, East Coast or any other type of swing moves into West
Coast Swing, followed by the dance social. Come out and see our
new location at 601 South Main Street. Class starts exactly at 6:30,
dancing at 7:30 until dark (9:30).

Thanks to Michael for coming to my dance class at Santa Fe.
See the article for details.

Tango this Friday night is at Irene's house. See details below.
There is no tango Saturday night, so come out to the Contra dance.
Next week, tango instructor Mimi Santapa from Argentina is here
in Gainesville. Her father was a famous tango instructor and
they focus on balance, one of my favorite subjects.

Looks like we are going to get a pretty skyline of oil
platforms off our gulf shore in Florida. If your boat sinks,
you will be only a short swim away from the nearest one.
If you want to help oil companies make more money and delay
the growth of renewable energy resources, do not sign this petition.

I signed it.

Happy Dancing,
Andy

Article: Israeli Dancing, Jewish Spirituality and Shabbat

The class at Santa Fe is a Community Education Spirituality
and Religion series, mainly for seniors. Had some time to connect
the dances to the spirituality. Here is a little bit of that.

In an observant Jewish community, the center piece of Jewish
spirituality is Shabbat. The bible starts with Bereisheit,
in the beginning God created the universe in six days,
rested on the seventh and commanded us to do likewise.

An observant Jewish male prays three times a day.
That is a lot of praying when you have a busy schedule for work.
During the week, prayers are rushed, but on Shabbat, we have
nothing pressing to do, so we can take our time.
The way we take our time is by singing. One of the things we
sing is a nigun, which is a melody without words. So I taught
the first dance, Nigun Atik, ancient melody. Thanks to Erin
working with my singing, I braved singing a nigun in front
of everyone, all by myself. Think Michael can confirm it was
not horrible.

God did create at least one thing on Shabbat and that is the soul.
On Erev Shabbat, Friday night, we welcome the Sabbath bride, the
bridegroom being the people Israel. To start the service we sing
Yedid Nefesh, meaning soul mate, and so we learned the dance to
Yedid Nefesh.

The last dance we learned was Tzadik Katamar. There is a psalm
for each day of the week. Psalm 92 is for Shabbat and the most
well-known line starts Tzadik Katamar, the righteous shall flourish
like a cedar in Lebanon. There is a legend of the Lamed-Vov, the 36
Tzadikim, righteous people who do not even know they are one of them,
their existence holds the world together.
