The Gainesville Holistic Health Fair

will be held on

Saturday, January 30^th, 2010,

at the United Church of Gainesville,

1624 NW 5th Avenue in Gainesville

(at the corner of NW 17th Street and 5th Avenue)

from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

 

As part of our holistic nature, we will promote sustainability this year by giving away female chicks to good homes, first-come, first served.  This would be to people who want them as pets, and for eggs, to start up their own backyard poultry.  We hatched some chicks years ago when my daughter was young, and now she's a farmer!  We love our chicken pets and would like to share the sustainability and self reliance empowerment that one experiences from having a couple of hens in their own backyard.  Because of my daughter, and an enlightened Gainesville City Commission, it is now legal to raise two hens in the city in your backyard.  Backyard chicken eggs, from happy hens feeding on bugs and weeds, are some of the healthiest food you can get.  We even will be giving away a tiny bit of organic chicken starter feed with the chicks. 

The entry fee will still be $5 donation for adults; and children are free.  Our nonprofit sponsors will receive the proceeds from entrance fees to the health fair.  Last year the Gainesville Holistic Health Fair raised $700 for its sponsors, the Home Van that feeds Gainesville's homeless, the Displaced Homemaker Program at SFCC, and Three Aunties.  This year we are again sponsoring these three not-for-profit organizations.

There is still time for alternative medicine schools, practitioners, vendors, educators, musicians, artists, children's program leaders, nonprofits, food providers, and anyone who practices healing through movement, touch, food, herbs, energy, sound, images, words to contact me about being a part of the health fair.  We especially need someone who will sell nourishing traditions food and people who will do something for the children's program.

About the Gainesville Holistic Health Fair

An amazing array of holistic health practitioners will demonstrate and explain their unique healing skills amongst soothing music, art, poetry, dance, workshops, and fun things for families with children.  The health fair was created to give our community an opportunity to speak with a wide variety of holistic health practitioners and see and experience their specialties. 

The Gainesville Holistic Health Fair provides our local and wider community with an opportunity for people to become more familiar with alternative modalities and practitioners, and learn about the benefits of alternative medicine and complementary modalities.  Visitors to the health fair meet holistic health care practitioners and have an opportunity to experience a sample healing session.  They are introduced to empowering self-care and alternative techniques and philosophies that can help keep them healthy.

SHERI WINSTON will be in Gainesville!  

Sheri Winston, CNM, RN, BSN, LMT, is a Wholistic Sexuality Teacher and Counselor, as well as the Founder & Executive Director of the Center for the Intimate Arts.  Sheri Winston is a medical professional, sexuality educator and author who is on a mission to transform our culture's attitudes about sex.  She's also a highly knowledgeable health educator who specializes in sexual and reproductive health. 

I attended a 4-hour workshop she did at the SE Women's Herbal Conference a few years ago, and it was fantastic!!  I am so excited that she will be coming to Gainesville and will be holding workshops, teaching classes, and counseling from February 16^th through 21^st.

Earth Spirit Healing Class starting in January

Earth Spirit Healing is a series of Earth Centered experiences given to me by my own experience and by teachers from various realms.  These experiences introduce the participant to shamanic practice and shamanic healing.  They deepen our experience of Earth, of Humanity, of ourselves, and of Creator.  These teachings are shared by experience and by ceremony and a minimum of "teaching by talk."  Experiences include Shamanic Journeying, Stone Spirit Healing, Making and Using Flower and Stone Essences, Shamanic Healing, and more.  A completion of the whole series results in certification as Earth Spirit Healing Practitioner.  However, parts of the series may be taken on their own, for their individual benefit.  The class will meet on Tuesday evenings, from 7:00 to 9:00, starting January 12.  Cost is $10 per Tuesday evening.  Contact me to register, or show up the first night. sacredearthcenter@yahoo.com  (352)275-8537

 

Reiki Training in Lake City

The Holistic Health Expo will be held at the Ocala Inner Center at 205 Magnolia Avenue in Ocala, FL.  Ocala Inner Center and Realms Beyond are hosting their first Holistic Health Expo in downtown Ocala. STOP THE LEVY COUNTY NUCLEAR POWERPLANT! 

The nuclear industry is using global warming and peak oil to justify building new nuclear powerplants.  It's deceptive and even ironic that they say nuclear powerplants have a "small carbon footprint," using this as an excuse to continue to spew the most dangerous and destructive pollution known to humans:  radioactive materials! 

They have come to Florida because our population is not as well-informed, more trusting of industry, and more likely to acquiesce to their terrible plans, compared to some other places in the nation.  It's important that we stay informed and act to oppose these sneaky tactics. 

Progress Energy is planning to build a $17 billion dollar nuclear generation facility near Inglis, Florida. 

On October 14, 2008, the Public Service Commission voted to allow Progress Energy Florida to charge customers an additional $11.42 per 1,000 kilowatt hour, beginning in January 2009, to pay for the Levy plant and work upgrading the Crystal River plant.

On January 5, 2009, Progress Energy awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to Westinghouse and The Shaw Group's nuclear division to build the two reactors for $7.65 billion. They are projecting the reactors are to be operational by 2016–18.

On February 6, 2009, the Green Party of Florida (http://www.floridagreens.org) joined with the Nuclear Information and Resource Service  http://www.nirs.org  and the Ecology Party to file a legal challenge to the new nuclear power plant proposed by Progress Energy Florida in Levy County.

The filing is a formal Petition to Intervene in the NRC's licensing process for nuclear power plants, the latest in a series of such actions taken by the Nuclear Information and Resource Service and other groups nationwide to protect the health and safety of the public and the natural resources that are placed at risk by this industry. 

The interventions are intended to stop these dangerous nuclear boondoggles before construction work starts and millions of dollars are wasted.  Nuclear power is NOT what we need now (http://www.nukeflorida.net/). 

Research done in Florida has shown that children living near and downwind of nuclear facilities suffer much higher rates of cancer and thyroid problems due to the radiation that leaks out of the power plants.  See:   http://www.radiation.org/ and http://www.whoseflorida.com/nuclear_waste.htm

Then there is the problem of disposing of nuclear waste, which will continue to be dangerous for many thousands of years.  There is no place to put it that will keep it out of the human environment for more than a few generation, much less until it loses its radioactivity. 

One way the government and industry has found to get rid of nuclear waste is to use it in weapons.  It's called "depleted uranium" or DU, but that name belies the fact that more deadly radiation has been spread throughout the globe as depleted uranium weaponry than was spread during all the above ground nuclear testing and the nuclear bombs used against Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. 

This nuclear contamination does not stay in countries where the US wages foreign wars, but is accidentally carried back home.  Besides fallout and veteran soldiers with mysterious diseases, DU finds its way back to the USA.  One example is how it was found in imported steel pots and pans made from recycled metal containing DU that was purchased by Japan.   (http://www.nirs.org/radwaste/recycling/recyclinghome.htm)

Join me in a dynamic, exciting, interactive class experience in which you will become familiar with the Rider Waite Tarot Deck, the most popular and widely used Tarot card deck.

Many believe that Tarot cards can provide direction and meaning by opening a valuable portal to one's own internal mirror, reflecting mirror images to self-discovery.

Learn how to "read" the colors, symbols and pictures to gain insights and fresh perspectives on your life and that of others.

Through a series of shared insights, we will explore various and compelling layouts (spreads), to do readings for each other and open a window to:

►Self-reflection
►Fresh perspectives on life
►Entertainment
►Meditation
►Answers to questions
►Insight for decision making

We will use "cheat sheets" of basic information and each will come away with new insight into personality traits and to what motivates them.

In order to allow each person to gain maximum benefit, this class will be limited to 8 people. BONUS: Each person will be offered a calculation of their birth cards, if they wish.
