Israeli Dancing 101, Contra, New Beginner Swing

Hello Gainesville Ocala Israeli and Folk Dancers,

Israeli Folk Dancing 101 class 3 of 4 is tonight at B'nai Israel from 7 to 8 pm followed by our normal session from 8 to 9. Everyone welcome even if you missed prior sessions. See the article about the dances we did in week 2.

Next Sunday are two easy, fun dance programs you should consider. (1) There is a Contra Dance at the Boltin Center from 4 to 7. (2) From 6 to 7 on Sunday, I have a couple just learning to Swing dance and you can join us. This is a super slow paced Swing class for anyone just starting out. You can get a head start on the Lindy Swing Dancing 101 starting October 30.

Article: Dances From Week 3 of Israeli Folk Dancing 101

Congratulations to everyone on your progress in Israeli Folk Dancing 101
on Monday. You surprised me. I did not expect you would be able to do last
week's dances so well and that we would be able to learn three new dances.

The next class is next Monday, September 26 from 7 to 8 pm.

Be sure to go to www.GainesvilleDance.com and
sign up for the Israeli and Folk Dance newsletter.
It is the second newsletter on the left side.

You can also sign up for the Swing, Ballroom and Social Dance newsletter.

All the dances we are learning are from what I like to call the classic period of Israeli dancing.
These are the dances from the early years of the re-born state of Israel up to about 1980.
The first dance was done around 1924. Of course, the real first dance goes back to ancient times,
as it is written "David danced and leapt before the Lord."

You learned three dances on Monday night. Here they are with links to a video.

1. Klezmer (Aveinu Shalom Aleichem)
   www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ0uXBARBMc

2. Ma Navu
   www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IUJ0cjYaq4

3. Yedid Nefesh
   www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCQLyiXlJH8

Following are links to the song lyrics of all the dances you have learned.

Eretz Eretz Eretz – Land, Land, Land
Eretz refers to the Land of Israel
  www.hebrewsongs.com/?song=eretzeretzeretz

Klezmer - Instrumental only, but here is a link to another song
in the same tradition, Hevenu Shalom Aleichem which means Peace Unto You.
Shalom Aleichem is a traditional greeting from Eastern European Jewry.
  www.hebrewsongs.com/?song=hevenushalomaleichem

Ma Navu - How Pleasant, from Isaiah
  www.hebrewsongs.com/song-manavu.htm

Nigun Atik – Ancient Melody. A nigun is a song without words, often
hummed on Shabbat as a form of prayer and often before the meal between
washing hands and the motzi, the blessing over the bread, during which
time you are not supposed to speak.
  www.hebrewsongs.com/?song=nigunatik

Od Lo Ahavti Dai – I Have Not Loved Enough, who has?
  www.hebrewsongs.com/song-odloahavtidai.htm

Tzadik Katamar – Righteous Man Will Flourish, from Psalm 92, the Psalm for Shabbat.
  www.hebrewsongs.com/?song=tzadikkatamar

Yedid Nefesh - Soul Mate, sung every Friday night to welcome the Shabbat,
as the Shabbat is symbolized as the bride of the People of Israel, Israel's soul mate.

Article: You Learn What You Are Ready to Learn

When I was in third grade, my Dad gave me a book "How to Think Ahead in Chess". I have read this book many times and told people the book was about what opening you should play.

Having just finished reading the book again, I started rereading it right away. I was looking for how to play the middle game, not the opening, and thought maybe there was something I missed. Here is the first sentence of the book.

"This book has been written to show you what to do after the opening stage has been passed."

Did I miss the whole point of the book? Not exactly. Their solution was to learn one opening for white and two for black so you know what type of middle game you are going to play. I had gotten a lot out of the book, but even after reading it many times, there is a lot I have missed, like the first sentence.

Learning to dance is a lot like that. There is more there than we think. You cannot rush the process. You learn what you are ready to learn. You miss what you are not ready for.

Article: Message for the Holiday Season, We Feel the Years Slipping Away

[I enjoyed this article and wanted to share it with you.]
We can feel it in the air. Summer is falling away and as it does Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are upon us. Soon we will join with family and friends in what I know will be a memorable and sweet opportunity to share and celebrate. Nevertheless, the passage of time is palpable during this season and we feel the years slipping by even faster and faster.
