Planting Trees, Contra, Tango, Waltz Brunch, Free Swing

Hello Gainesville Ocala Social Dancers,

To grow our community we need to bring in new dancers. See the article Plant More Trees.

Do you want to dance for free? Join our fun Sunday Evening the More You Dance the More You Save Program. If you go to any organized dancing, during the prior week, you can come to our Lindy Swing followed by Hustle! Session for half price, $5 general, $3 students. If you go to two sessions during the prior week you can come on Sunday evening for free. We had a full house last week with all levels from beginners to advanced, with something for everyone, while we learned the Lindy Rhythm turn, which we will continue this week.

To help bring more people into the community, we are running a beginning Lindy Swing series for 4-weeks through Santa Fe Community Education starting the end of October. Encourage anyone you know who wants to start dancing to attend this class. This is a great time to get started dancing with a partner with other beginners like themselves.

Speaking of great times for beginners to start, this weekend Andrea is holding an absolute beginners Tango class. pham.andrea@gmail.com

While it is easiest to start in a class with other newcomers, beginners are welcome at all classes.

Get yourselves loosened up for a packed weekend of dancing.

UF Tango and UF Swing Club meet tonight Friday, both with lessons starting at 8 pm.

Saturday night is a Contra Dance at the Boltin Center, which everyone can do, even if you have not danced before.

Tango Pavadita holds their Milonga Saturday night.

Josh will be playing music suitable for West Coast Swing and other dancing at the Eagles Club on Saturday at 7 for free after the game. You can go early to watch the game.

This Sunday is the monthly Vintage Waltz brunch, one of Gainesville's most popular dance events.

Richard is teaching Night Club Two Step on Tuesday nights at the Boltin Center.

Next Wednesday is Josh's monthly West Coast Swing Dance Party.

Next Friday is Kay Picart's intermediate to advanced Mambo. Kay is a US Open Champion. We have really been enjoying her classes. Take advantage of this rare opportunity while Kay is in town. When Josh holds a workshop and brings in a professional dancer, they are at Kay's level and we have here for a regular class on Friday nights. I think this is the best dance instruction in town that I know of.

Next weekend Saturday September 24 the excellent Victor Crichton will teach a Tango workshop.

Sunday September 25 Five Rhythms meets for meditative dance in place of our regular Sunday night Swing dancing.

October 28 is Imperial Dance Studio's 2011 Showcase. You must by tickets in advance if you want to go. 352-375-7763

Christian has canceled his Thursday night Balboa class. I urge you to urge him to reconsider with your support. It was a great class.

In Jacksonville, Salsa Caliente has the monthly social this Friday night September 16 from 9:30 pm to 2 am at 9751 Mining Drive. 904-370-1190

Article: Plant More Trees. It Takes a Village to Grow a New Dancer

There was a little back and forth this week about there being two Tango classes on Wednesday night.

My response was that is no problem. There is no conflict. We are all one family.

Ideally it would be better to have the classes on different nights. Sure, if you are trying to get everybody together for a dance to pay for the rental of a hall, you do not want to dilute your crowd, but for small classes in private homes, the more dancers getting together, the better.

Say there about 300,000 people in Alachua County and nearby in other counties. By my count, in our area, there are say around 300 people that go social dancing regularly, say twice a month or more. Maybe 1 person in 1,000 dances regularly. That is poor market penetration.

As dance organizers, we are not in competition with each other. Our market is not close to saturated.

We are the stewards of social dancing in our community. Social dancing is a great product and the best way I know of socializing. We are evangelists on the same team.

When I was in high school, my Dad prodded me into dancing when he mocked me when I said I did not like to dance. He said, "You do not know how to dance. You cannot say you do not like it. That is like saying you do not like playing the piano. You have no idea what it is like to play the piano and you have no idea what it is like to dance."

As a freshman in college, my best friend Scott Annan's robot, splits, cool moves and heart thumping music inspired me, and I only had to trade a few kisses to get some awesome girl dancer to teach me my first steps in dancing with a partner.

Almost a decade later, during a Gainesville interlude, a female friend twice took me to my first organized dancing at UF Hillel for Israeli Folk Dancing, though we were clueless. Nine months later in Chicago, I went to a Jewish singles party, which featured Israeli Folk Dancing. The dance teachers left their flyer. The next Thursday I went to Phil Moss' dance session and the rest is history.

It takes a village and many years to recruit and train a new dancer.

Think of it as planting trees. The more people providing entry to the dance community, the more our community will grow and everyone will benefit. We cannot plant enough trees.
